#‘it’s so unnecessary’ . okay . god yea this one drives me CRAZY. people will yap all day long about how it's "unnecessary" to make a character a survivor like do you think it was necessary for any of us to be abused or raped irl? was it narratively essential? did it teach the audience an important lesson? why do we, who have to justify our experiences and existences and reactions all the time in real life, also have to justify why we should exist in fiction? people act so repulsed by the thought of us. i've really fully and truly had enough of that. there is nothing so uniquely disgusting or repulsive or unspeakable about our victimhood or our survival that justifies this obsession with keeping the reality of our existence hidden
Nauseating, by the way, just how prevalent abstinence-only ideology seems to have completely washed through people like. It's just common now for some shithead to show up like "you think it's normal for teenagers to watch porn? 😬" Yeah actually it is one of the most historically well-understood axioms of teenagers that they are horny all the time because of puberty. They're literally in the process of sexual development, their bodies are building and testing the hardware for sex.
Of course every person is different and there's a full spectrum of sex drive among teenagers, but if you're seriously expecting most teenagers not to masturbate until they turn 18 you are living in a fantasy. Sex isn't evil!!!!!! Sex isn't damaging!!! Sex is not toxic or harmful!!! Sex is just sex, and whether or not something constitutes sexual abuse or sexual harm has more to do with what makes something abusive or harmful, and little to do with how sexual it is.
Also, the idea that children seeing porn is how sexual abuse happens is fully based on gut-disgust reactions and has genuinely nothing to do with the realities of the factors that actually give rise to sexual abuse. Of course it should not be possible or at least likely for kids to just accidentally stumble into porn, but that's true in general; nobody wants to be jumpscared with porn when they're trying to do some other shit. If some non-adult is out there seeking out sexual materials, all that matters is that they're keeping it to themselves and not trying to engage strangers online about it, and that they have a solid foundation of sexual education and media literacy on which to make smart, healthy decisions while doing so.
Sexual development, like all development, happens over time, and starts before adulthood. We need to accomodate the reality that exists, no matter how uncomfortable that reality is. Trying to push to make it impossible for teenagers to see porn is just divorced from reality, and the basis for trying to do so is anti-science. Figure out how to deal with it.
Folks forget how common a trope it was in movies from the 70s and 80s that the teenage boy would have a stack of racy or explicit magazines under his bed, or for teenage girls to swoon over the muscular lifeguard climbing or if the pool/ ocean. The awkwardness of "The Talk" in 90s media came up all the time and generally was a call from the parent for the teenager to be careful, rather than it being treated as SINFULL. Teenage sexuality was treated as funny because it was embarrassing for kids to get caught or be taught about it, but it wasn't this taboo subject that masses of people would jump to calling pedophilia.

Oh, a human being is seeking a social response? Human being, the social animal wired to make and track social connection? The human being who was born completely helpless and primed in every way by nature to seek attention and help from their community?
Wow that’s crazy. How embarrassing. Humiliating even. Should we isolate them from community? Should we call Wire Mother?
For the love of god if your native language is different from the majority language of the country you’re living in don’t raise your baby speaking the local language. Either have each parent speak to them in a different language or only speak your native language at home. The kid will be okay. Get your native language in their head. You may think you’re helping them in the long term giving them the local language but no. When they’re an adult they’ll wonder why you never taught them your language. They can and will learn the local language in school. They’ll be okay. Produce more bilingual children. They are good for society.
And also, being bilingual helps with executive function. Not all kids have to reach the same language development at the same time as everyone else, it’s okay to have your kid speaking in more complex sentences a month or so later than the “normal” kids.
I've studied the science linguistically but I'd like to put that aside. PLEASE teach your kid the native language. It can go so much deeper than "wondering why", it can create a schism-like pain when you know there's a heritage you have but all access has been cut off. Yes, ALL. If you're fortunate enough to visit the country of your native language but dont teach your kid, they will be miserable, quiet, and alone, and go through difficult phases of hating that heritage because the ladders were cut for them.
And in the United States, this starts young. I've seen teachers tell a Kazakhstani parent that she should tell her kid to speak English INSTEAD. The kid was 2 and a half. A friend's five year old told him "Dad this is America we dont speak Chinese". If you don't teach your kid your native language this country will wrest all pride and heritage from them by force. An occasional visit or two to the home country will not stop the bleeding.
The pain of not speaking the language of my heritage is something I don't wish on anyone. And that language is one of the most spoken in the world, imagine if your native language is rarer. What happens? What happens?
When you read this post in a different context than the US, everything is very confusing until you realize it's written from a US perspective where being bilingual is something almost exclusive of the children of immigrants.
There are millions and millions of us for whom our native language is very much not the majority language of our country, but at the same time is our local language (and the majority language acts as our second language).
There are endangered languages on every continent of the world because people teach their children the majority language instead of their native language so I very much doubt that this problem doesn’t exist where you are.

After some thought... I teach a quail care class locally, it takes roughly 2ish hours, 3 max. I've been told a few times that people are too far to come to it or they would, or asked if I would do an online one for non-locals.
So, if I were to offer an online class about quail care, would you want to attend? I would probably set it up on zoom unless I find a better group video chat method (maybe a private youtube stream or something?), and it would be free or at least low-cost.

Species dysphoria is a lot worse than gender dysphoria, personally speaking. Like, at least with gender dysphoria, you can take HRT or get surgeries to ease it. Species? I can do absolutely nothing to become more wolf-like. I can't do anything to make people perceive me as less human. There's nothing that can ever be done about it, and it seriously takes a toll on you after a while.
i feel like when we talk about autism as a disability a lot of it is about sensory stuff (valid) but recently ive been like. damn this really is a communication disorder. so much of the stress being autistic in society causes me is related to communication. its really insane how for years of my life i thought my autism didn't really affect my social skills much. could not have been further from the truth i spend so much energy trying to make sense of how to engage with other people. and i think it's good to put this in terms of disability and not just "my brain is different" because it's not just that my brain is different! all brains are different! mine is different in a way where it makes things noticeably harder and more exhausting for me.
I see autistic people sometimes act like this is just a problem for us because we live in a neurotypical world, right? but my friends, my social circle is pretty much chock full of other neurodivergent people, and I am still constantly dealing with communication frustration. even with other autistic people. even with other autistic people I like.
my brain gets a little rigid sometimes, and sometimes that means I miss interpretations of sentences... and sometimes, the interpretation that I missed is the only interpretation to occur to the other person I'm trying to communicate with. Which is more common if you're both autistic! Both of us are being reasonable, but... small miscommunications still happen. which is frustrating. you can learn to account for them, like triple-checking meanings when it's important or talking about why interpretation problems happen, but it's still a little layer of difficulty-grit that is always getting caught in my skin.
