I'm personally a fan of the quarterstaff or the mace, they have room for you to use a little bit of flare and depending on how good you want to be they quickly move out of the realm of your average foot soldier being able to use them (that is at least the case for the quarterstaff, the mace is by far much simpler)

quarterstaff with sharpened gears to add a bit of glaive to your bludgeoning.
