Oooooh, that's a good question, Anon. I'm going to assume -- but please chime in if I'm wrong -- that everything else stays the same. The murder is unsolved, the cops don't really seem that fussed about finding out who did it, etc. So one of the most interesting things to me about Beckett is that she doesn't seem to gravitate to one parent over the other in the show. Yeah, some of that is definitely because Johanna is dead and that hobbles any interaction/development and, you know, her memories of her mom are colored by the fact she's no longer around. But generally speaking, Beckett's relationship with Johanna seems less fraught with squabbles than with her dad. It truly seems like Johanna was at least understanding of some of her daughter's wilder tendencies, and was often the one trying to rein in Jim's overprotective streak. I think, over time, she and Johanna would become quite close if Jim had died. She still becomes a cop, because she won't stand for not having the murder solved or for other people being treated as they were, and Johanna is her number one cheerleader as she goes through the Academy. Where Jim and KB kind of fractured for a while due to his drinking and their grief, I think Johanna and KB would have done the opposite and drawn closer together. So you'd see Johanna involved in her life a lot more than Jim arguably is. Like to the point Johanna would be a recurring character (ala Martha) in this tv version of Castle. She'd know what Kate was working on, she'd known who she's dating, and offer her sage advice about all of it. And, yeah, I think once Kate is in the NYPD, she and Johanna generally piece together what they know about Jim's case. Johanna's a lawyer, and while I can buy that she's a bit broken and stunted by his death, she never strikes me in the show as the type of person in life to just let things lie. Johanna, like Kate, would push and push and push to try and find out what happened. In my mind, they work it together and eventually concede that they need to step back and give themselves some time before trying again. That's about the time she meets Castle and, you know, it's like a moth to a flame. I think it'd be a change in Kate's personality, too. I don't think she'd be quite as broken or as haunted as she is when the show begins. I think she'd probably have a few more friends because Johanna would push her not to lose herself in her work and to live her life. Probably would have dated a bit more, and maybe had a few serious relationships. The walls she put up wouldn't be quite so high or indestructible, and I don't think she would resist her connection with Castle quite so much, either. Not with her mother and Martha (who clearly would team up and become best friends) around to cajole and poke and steer them together. I guess the easiest way to describe it -- think of Beckett and Castle meeting when Kate's in her late season two headspace of being more open to living her life. She's still got that innate passion and sense of justice, she still gives everything to her job, but she's got a better balance of the job vs. her life. That's where I see her.
