as someone who is autistic, has adhd, and struggled a lot with grades in school, i can promise every single person on this post trying to come up with alternatives that punishing kids in any form for bad grades will not help even a little. it will ONLY contribute to their mental health issues + stress and doesnt solve the problem at all.
if u really want a change in a kids grades, ask them whats wrong. ask them what is getting in the way, ask them if theyre okay, ask them if they need help or if they need some advice or hell, even give them a hug.
school is terrifying and stressful and it was the biggest source of the severity of my mental health issues when i was in school and i can tell u for a fact that if my parents had supported me and helped me and encouraged me i would have felt infinitely more eager to complete my work instead of curling up in a puddle of guilt and depression from the stress of school
if a kid is getting bad grades it will never be genuine laziness. there is always a reason. there is always going to be something identifiable that is getting in the way of success and it will NEVER be the kids "laziness". please do not ever guilt or punish or scold kids for their grades, im begging u. negative reinforcement will only encourage worsening responses
tell kids ur proud of them for doing their best. tell them ur proud of them even when they fail, tell them its okay to fail, make kids know that they are not a burden or a failure or a disappointment because of some numbers on a sheet determined by one of the shittiest systems in the world
