Hi, I take it that you completed the Cruel Prince trilogy and The Darkest Part Of The Forest, so maybe you know. I purchased and am reading the books in Polish, my native language (so maybe there are some translation issues) and I'm finishing QoN at the moment but already skipped through TDPotF AND in QoN Jude saw a red haired girl knight, who I presume is Hazel, but who is the person she reconizes as the warrior's twin and Severin's spouse? Is he not with Ben after all? I am confusion plz help

Honestly, I’d love to read a TFOTA novella/short story about Eva Duarte. From what we know about her, she was a good mother (though the girls’ memories of her must be heavily tinted with nostalgia and therefore possibly idealized), she loved her family, and she wanted Vivi to be ‘particularly kind’. She also (together with Justin or alone) killed a pregnant woman in order to fake her death and escape Faerieland. And she used to be friends with Lady Asha, who valued partying and entertainment over her own baby son. She seems like a very complex character (which really could be said about every member of Jude’s family, biological or adopted), and I think it would be interesting to learn her own perspective of what happened to her in Faerie.

How do you pronounce Elfhame?? I’ve always wondered if I was saying it correctly

I always pronounced it Elf-ame, with the h being silent (and -ame rhyming with lame or game)

BUT English is not my native language so don’t take my word for it anon! 😅

Well I suspect this comes down to me living in Britain where all the Hs in names of places, seem to be silent - Birmingham, Clapham, Fulham, etc.

Some linguist (?) online says that “In general, word-medial /h/ tends to be lost before an unstressed vowel”

I’m not saying this is the right pronunciation, just the way I pronounce it 🤷‍♀️

Why Locke’s death was off-page

I know a lot of people were annoyed that Locke’s death was off-page and I can’t blame them. We all wanted to see that turd get stabbed in the neck. But I get such a keen sense of satisfaction thinking about how much Locke would have HATED finding out his death wasn’t important enough to make it on the page. That he wasn’t the master of stories like he thought he was. That Taryn was the main character and he was just a footnote.

Having his death off-page undermines what he would want as a character. And frankly, I love that

The bastard older brother who framed him for murder was about to be handed a position of absolute power. Cardan must have been feeling completely hopeless. He must have thought "This is going to be awful. I might as well send a beautiful dress to the mortal girl I love and dance with her tonight."

Um... Why is TFOTA split between The Cruel Prince and The Wicked King instead of being classified as a series (like every single other series on this list)...? If it’s done based on the counts of hashtags surely the combined place for the series would be higher...

Am I the only one that was bothered by how Jude figured out about the hair on the bridle thing by freaking Mother Marrow who no one cares about, after (for whatever reason) going to her for guidance (?????) and making a sarcastic comment?????

She might have literally bound herself to a snake if it wasn't for the rare occurrence of her saying a sassy line and that is not how you build a plot point sorry Holly I love you but what??the???fuck?????????

Agreed, I found that nonsensical too. Jude should have found out about this some other way.

So I saw that you read TFOTA before reading Modern Faerie Tales and TDPOTF. I was just wondering if you were completely lost reading the scenes that included Roiben, Kaye and Severin or if you could follow along okay without having read those books. I've been wanting to recommend TFOTA to a few people but I didn't know how they would understand the political aspects of TFOTA if they hadn't read those.

I don’t think not having read the other books had any impact on my understanding of the faerie politics, no! I felt like the readers were given enough information about Roiben, Kaye, and Severin in TFOTA itself to understand the overall political situation. I didn’t even realise those were characters from other books until I saw people mention it on Tumblr, to be completely honest.

So yeah overall I feel like it should be totally fine to recommend TFOTA to people as a standalone series - I totally enjoyed it as such. But I haven’t actually read the modern faerie tales or the darkest part of the forest yet, so I can’t say for sure if there was anything I blatantly missed because of that. It didn’t feel like that though.

Hi! As for the Folk of the Air trilogy, the first book is The Cruel Prince, which I started from. The second book is The Wicked King and the final one The Queen of Nothing.

There are other, earlier books by Holly Black set in this universe (called Modern Faeire Tales and The Darkest Part of the Forest I believe) but it’s not necessary to have read them to understand the plot. The characters from those books simply appear as cameos in TFOTA. I personally never read them and started from The Cruel Prince.
