Printed Village review of Surtex 2017
This was the first year Printed Village exhibited at Surtex, our goal was to meet new companies to license the work of Printed Village artists. Overall the show was a bit slow, the surrounding booths were not busy and we were told by other artists that they were only able to make 1 or 2 sales, many exhibitors made no sales.
The licensing booths toward the front of the show were busy, these are agents that represent multiple artists, it makes sense they’ve built up clients over the years.
The expense of the show was over $6,000 with printing and travel costs, for most independent artists that is extreme. Hopefully Printed Village can represent a model that allows artists and companies to work together in much easier more modern way.
If you do plan to exhibit at Surtex here are a few things you should plan:
Make appointments before the show, buyers were very reluctant to just walk into an unknown booth, it almost seemed like you had to pull them in to talk to you. Find out who you want to see and try your best to email or call them before the show to set and appointment. Good graphics, lots of buyers are just going by the appearance of the booth and if they see something they like on the wall.
Print outs vs. iPad its really your call, we used iPads, but most of the exhibitors had large print outs that buyers could flip through. Again its an expense to have everything printed, for us we feel its much easier to work digitally.

5 Quickes for Matt Tindal
What’s your $$ job?
I’ve been a hair stylist for the last 15 years, and have been lucky enough to work alongside some of the industry greats and help tutor the next generation. After a spell of owning a thriving salon on the UK’s south coast, I decided to put on the brakes and pursue my life long passion for design.
How’d you learn surface design?
I first got excited by surface design a few years ago when I began a course in visual communications. Since then I have developed my style and technique through relentless research and practice.
What’s your process? (digital, pen + paper, both)
The natural world is my greatest inspiration, and I’m so lucky to live positioned between the coast and the British countryside. I usually develop my designs by photographing, note-making, and pencil sketching, before building the pattern using design software and a graphics tablet.
5 year plan?
The plan for the next 5 years is to evolve, perfect, and simply enjoy what I love to do. The reward is to hopefully see my work adorning more great products in the future.
What now?
Right now, I am developing designs for Fall/Winter and Spring/Summer seasons. I am brimming with ideas after a recent trip overseas, and the summer is a great time to be outdoors and get inspired. So I guess, watch this space...

5 Quickes for Parmeet Arora Bori
What's your $$ job?
I am one of the lucky ones, as I get to do what I love. Create! I work as a freelance Surface Pattern Designer currently working with two very good print studios based in U.K. and Mexico. I do occasionally work with Independent creatives or startups designing logos, Film posters, Banners, Catalogues and other fun projects. I do have a small label ‘plaincurious’ where I design and stitch clothes and sell in craft markets and online.
How'd you learn surface design?
I learned how much I loved it during my Fashion Design course at London College of Fashion, but I have loads to thank for my role as a Print Designer at Memo Fashions, UK highstreet supplier for 8 yrs. I have been a member of Textile Design Lab by Pattern Observer since last year which certainly has been a great motivator while helping me learn so much about my style.
What's your process? (digital, pen + paper, both)
I love starting with paper and colours after my initial trend research, everyday doodles keeps me going. After I have good selection of artworks I play around on Adobe to create the final repeat.
5 year plan?
To keep on Creating things I love taking inspiration from our travels. To work with Brands such as Anthropologie, Free People, Design houses such as Isabel Marrant and Anna Sui. To keep learning and improving in creative field and oh, to move to a nice place near sea.
What now?
I am busy creating for Fall, Excitedly preparing nursery for lil bundle of joy due soon and couple of small art exhibitions in Toronto showcasing my mixed media paintings. Learn Italian. And of course I will submit my work regularly for the Printed Village Monthly Challenges.
