Cubs these days have it easy. Back in my day we didn't have all those fancy "sky scales" and "rolling beetles." We had to WALK everywhere. Uphill. In the snow. BOTH WAYS. WHILE FIGHTING SAURIANS. AND WE LIKED IT.
been sitting on these for a while and I think they're as done as they're gonna get! trying to simplify isgarren's whole wardrobe deal is about to make me start throwing things
some rambling/thoughts/etc. below the cut
idk I seem to be in the minority here but I do actually genuinely like isgarren. lol. lmao.
BUT most of the criticism I've read about him is all very valid. he's a character with a ton of potential that just isn't being used for some reason.
he doesn't exactly learn from his mistakes. he just kind of immediately shuts himself down emotionally and puts every bad experience into a box that he hasn't opened for centuries. that avoidance and weird selective amnesia makes him very compelling, but at some point, something has to happen. isgarren deflects every attempt to converse about the aforementioned Box, and at this point, it's starting to sound more like lazy writing rather than good characterization. I think voe is starting to tilt in an awkward-heart-to-heart-discussion direction, I hope, and I'm BEGGING anet to let us have an honest, genuine conversation with Isgarren about EVERYTHING.
I think isgarren's strongest characterization came in soto. his possessed monologue on top of the spire is something I think about often. we meet him at his absolute most vulnerable; possessed, at the mercy of cerus, and at the mercy of the commander who he's actively needling in all the wrong (right) ways. it's such a fascinating character introduction.
isgarren is a wonderful pragmatic/impersonal contrast to the commander's selfless/"i'd save the farm" mentality and I NEED them to yell at each other about it more.
I'm not a fan of how easily the commander came to heel next to Isgarren's side, and I wish they'd both tug at the leash a bit more, so to speak.
(again, I feel like voe is heading in this direction, ie. Isgarren can't touch ancora and the comm now knows about his exile. for once, it seems like the commander has a bit of power over him; both physically and emotionally)
(this is just me hoping that we get to see isgarren break in the next story update. he's got so much stacked against him right now, and as stoic and unmovable as he is, the Recent Events and Revelations are bound to get heavier and heavier to bolster by himself. I need him to either get really pathetic about it or just completely shut down. both would Cause Problems, and that's what I'm looking for.)
uhhhhhh this is absolutely just me, but I want the comm and isgarren's relationship to be a little more erotically charged. idk. I think the commander and isgarren are currently the two most powerful beings in tyria and that's a sexy and fun little relationship. I want them to fight. I want them to argue. I want them to stubbornly disobey their orders/a-previously-agreed-upon-plan bc they think they know more than the other. I want them to be in awe of each other. I want them to begrudgingly respect the other's power, authority, experience, and knowledge. I want them to kind of hate it. I want them to kind of love it.
I think isgarren is a voracious reader. that man reads everything (canonically including smut involving himself, to my absolute delight). I like to think that he's always in the middle of reading something, whether that be a tome, relic, history book, or Goldclaw's latest release.
he's also messy as hell, and is a little bit of a gossip hound. he likes To Know(tm).
I'm so enamored with the concept of a punk-ish, recently exiled isgarren deciding to take up residence in a floating tower. the unnecessary theatrical drama of that whole little number is so endearing to me.
I love that his all-knowing, all-powerful, holier-than-thou outward projection is occasionally rubbed away just enough to catch glimpses of his child-like petulance underneath. he's such a difficult person to get along with. he's just the worst.
I think he's a person who is obsessed with aesthetics, and, by extension, art. yes, it's good to be armed with knowledge and ability, but presentation is just as important. he's clearly given the astral ward a recognizable and concise aesthetic, and he's not even subtle about it. he likes all his little soldiers to be lined up just so in freshly pressed linens and newly polished weapons.
isgarren is a very good gift giver. I don't think he's handing out presents left and right, but he has an extensive collection (he's not called Isgarren the Curator for nothing, I'm sure) and knowledge of all sorts of artifacts, books, jewelry, weaponry, etc etc to know exactly what to present someone in the rare event that a gift is necessary.
Now that he's Out And About again, I think he probably gets mistaken for a djinn a lot
(I'm a little disappointed that the nickname given to him by those who are familiar with him is "Ren" and not "Izzy")

Some ramblings about the Carnival Sophie calls home, Cirque du Zarnovich 🎪
A Playlist for them...
Cirque Du Zarnovich
(Small disclaimer: Zarnovich's Circus exists within canon but this is my personal version of them. Tears and Zarnovich are the only WoD Canon characters. (That's my evil Carnival Master now 😉) Midge doesn't exist in this world anymore bc Sophie & Charie killed him after he tried to sacrifice Adilene and was discovered to be an infernalist)
The troupe was still quite small when Sophie arrived. Her mortal lifetime of being trained in estate management and other skills like sewing, along with her love for music, prepared her well. She immediately took over the finances and management.
Initially Sabbat aligned in their early days, the Carnival has become an independent sect that tends to work with Anarchs.
As the years passed, the carnival continued to grow and recruit members.
Some other specific roles I imagine exist within the carnival but haven't created characters of:
A strongman, a costume maker, a contortionist/aerial artist (Sophie occasionally does aerial performances as well), musicians, acrobats, magicians, other clowns, tech and food crews, and of course other staff to man booths and attractions.
Many Nosferatu reside within the carnival- almost the entire tech crew are Nos. They find themselves right at home among this sparkling carnival of horror and delight, and the Tzimisce are not ones to balk at their appearances either.
The food staff are all thin bloods and ghouls, and the Carnival tries to establish trade relationships with local thinbloods for supplies and food to provide their mortal customers.
In more modern nights, the Carnival has a relatively large staff. When they set up somewhere more longterm, they will also build upwards and establish bigger rides like a ferris wheel and carousel. Other attractions they keep on hand are of course Daciana's fortune telling tent, a hall of mirrors, a haunted fun house, and games like Darts, a shooting game, ring toss etc etc.
The big attraction of the Carnival is the main performance, which I imagine much like Cirque du Soleil.
Their storylines are much darker of course- a maiden crossing the river styx to find her lover, a plague doctor wandering the countryside and helping souls move on, a prowl through a maze of nightmares in a serial killer's head.
Sophie is the Diva, providing the singing for the performances. Zarnovich is the ringmaster and head of the show. Tears plays the Pierrot alongside several other clowns. Charie is the fire dancer, and Adilene later grows into her own, becoming the carnival's Diabolo performer.
Audience participation is something you want to avoid at this show-because you will become dinner. You are more likely to be targeted if you come alone or your trip to Daciana's tent reveals something nefarious lurking in your past or current intentions. The carnival is connected to many, many missing person cases.
The carnival itself is shrouded in strong koldunic magic. If you were not actively invited in or managed to get in during a show night, you will only find any empty lot or field, with no carnival in sight.
In more modern nights, many of the crew have upgraded to actual trailers, although a few, Sophie and Daciana included, chose to simply upgrade their private wagons with nicer amenities.
The Carnival is currently established on the outskirts of Montreal bordering a forest.
When they are not performing or practicing, the carnival can be hired for private performances. They also dabble in the trade of information, rare relics, books, and magical items.
The carnival quickly realized that having "live" animal attractions is not a great way to go. It was far to difficult to maintain care for the animals + ensure a hungry crew member didn't accidentally snack on them.
All of the current 'animals' are Szlachta like Radu- carefully crafted from dying circus animals that they liberated along the way, they are quite lifelike, but require far less care.
The herd includes several draft horses that pull wagons and small chariots for the main performers to tour the carnival with on show nights, a tiger, a bear, a zebra, and several monkeys.
These animals can and have been fleshcrafted to become more weaponlike in defense of the carnival. Take care not to approach the zebra lest it devour you. Were bears always...that large??!?
Also, some new art of Adilene, my Nosferatu girl ❤️ Sophie designed the jester hat and outfit to hide her batlike ears and face, so that she could perform in the main shows. She will also wander the carnival grounds and put on small Diabolo performances for the customers before and after the main show.
Took me a while to post these as well, sorry! I had a very kind private commission to draw these Guild Wars 2 characters for their respective VA (who are all so absolutely WONDERFUL). I had a lot of fun translating the game details into a smaller, spunky style. I hope you guys like!
Characters: Caithe, Almorra, R'tchikk and Madame Cookie, Gwen, Marjory, Kasmeer, Detective Rama, and Dagda!
