Yep, and it’s worth noting that Shockwave’s forearm here is large enough to cover Ratchet’s entire spark.
So he’s simultaneously pushing Ratchet back behind him, while also making sure Ratchet’s spark is doubly protected– If anyone returns Shockwave’s fire, if a stray shot hits Ratchet, at least it likely won’t permeate both Shockwave’s armour and Ratchet’s own.
A strategic move from a master of logic, as there’s enough room here for Shockwave to have pushed Ratchet back with his shoulder, thus leaving his other hand open to potentially wield another weapon while also shoving Ratchet fully behind him–
–However, that would possibly have left Ratchet more vulnerable to any open fire or ricochet shots from the sides.
Shockwave has Ratchet behind him at an angle here, diagonally opposite from where the “enemy” is facing them.
This helps potentially minimise the likelihood of Ratchet being directly hit by anything, as any shots aimed their way from the direction the Autobots would be firing upon them would then have to go entirely through Shockwave first; It would be hard to hit Ratchet from the side here, intentionally or accidentally, providing him with better overall cover.
Shockwave really wanted Ratchet to survive and remain as his lab partner.
