Really felt my age seeing the faces of these guys on screen with all the new young fans in the audience! Seems like it was only yesterday that I was a junior journalist and calling for the hottest up and coming actor of the year, Sidney Crosby, to look my way on the red carpet for the premier of the first installment in The Core Series! Sid, of course, stopped and answered my questions, polite and composed even then. Kris Letang scowled his way through and looked good doing it, while Marc-Andre Fleury, on the other hand, smiled at everything and everyone. Little did I know that during the press tour of the third one, I would spend ten minutes trying to un-saran wrap my microphone courtesy of The Flower himself even if I have never managed to prove it! Malkin, infamously so, pretended not to hear me calling his name at first and then tried the good old ‘Me no English’ card before Sergei Gonchar (director) shut that down quickly. I won’t lie, there were certainly choices made here that I, for one, would not have! But that doesn’t mean this isn’t worth seeing! It is flashy and magnetic, though calling it bold would be a stretch. I will say this, and this will be the last time, they should’ve chosen Gretzky over Gonchar for the director.

The Actorial

This was certainly a movie. All sauce and no substance, this is a true step down for three time Oscar winner Gonchar. Malkin is really showing his age – might be time to retire from the action-packed roles, even if they do allow his wooden acting some form of grace. Sources say that Crosby turned down a co-lead with Nathan MacKinnon for this, sad if true.

Fleury’s natural athleticism and inherent charming mischief is clear in his choice to do all his own stunts, along with Letang (and that IS his real hair, you know! I asked!). Malkin paints a striking figure, tall and big, right from the start where he is backlit by a Russian forest sunset that he is using as a hideout. Crosby, of course, is the creature that dominates both in presence and in acting. Fun, easy and fast – how I like my films!

Another altogether well-rounded Crosby movie. The cast has great chemistry – both between the lead mains and all the side characters. This is a film that knows what it is and there is no one who embodies its serious but light heartedness than Sidney Crosby himself. Thirty-eight and still doing his own stunts is awesome work.
