In love
Pairing: Neteyam x Y/n, one-shot, angst
Growing up, you'd hear of happy endings that include mating with the mate that Eywa destined you to be with. You'd live together, strong with the bond as you'd raise a family while always reaching for the better version of yourselves- You had seen this happen many times in your tribe and closely with your parents. The glow of love that surrounded the loved ones, represented the presence of Eywa herself.
"You'll know when you'll meet the one." Your mother would smile down at you, slightly grazing your chin as she listened to your worries of love. You tried to believe your mother, you really did, Your whole life you had watched from the sidelines as your friends and other members of the tribe announced their mating, love and assurance blooming. Happy to be a witness to Eywa's doings, sad to not be the one in Eywa's eyes.
And finally it happened.
Your eyes met those piercing yellow ones and you knew. The moment you had waited your whole life, the one your mother and Eywa had promised to you. Suddenly you were filled with feelings of fullness, wholeness that you never even dreamed of feeling. When Neteyam's eyes graced over your existence, you felt your breath hitch in your chest.
But you had to learn the hard way that Eywa had planned a different ending planned for you.
The sea sat still as if it was scared to move. You sat still, feet sinked into the sand keeping you from breaking down. It was calm as if before the storm. You felt that in you, the calmness and the storm slowly brewing. You were scared of yourself.
"Hey." Neteyam slowly stepped closer to you, careful not to scare you away. As he slowly sat down you dared to glance at him, feeling a slice of pain as you felt the pull towards him. Why did Eywa do this to you? Why did you do this to yourself? You should just walk away, be as far away from him as possible so that you wouldn't be in the way of his happy ending. You should just be content with your role.
"Congrats." You suddenly said, voice cold and eyes stern, not giving him another glance Neteyam sighed and placed his hand behind you as he leaned to it and towards you. Neteyam knew he should stay away, one wrong move and he would risk everything.
Neteyam had sought to see you the whole day. His parents and the tribe leader had organized a mating that would benefit everyone but Neteyam. He knew who he wanted. You. It was as clear as the sun from the moment he laid his eyes on you. He felt the pull towards you, as if you were water and he was dying. He thought you had felt the pull too since you were getting closer by the moment. The slight glances that you'd give him and the grazing touches that would replay in his mind all day, distracting him from anything.
"I'm not in love with you anymore." You suddenly blurted, swallowing the tears and pain. You heard your heartbeat in your ears ringing, reminding you of the bitter fate.
Neteyam stared at you, his mouth agape. You were in love with him? He knew the feelings were mutual but as deep as his? But what broke him was that he had lost you. He truly had lost you, his Eywa. His stomach sank and he breathed out the last bit of air that flowed in his lungs. The ground that kept him down shook.
"I didn't know you ever were.."
"Would it have changed anything?" You carefully asked, scared you'd just cut the wound deeper.
Neteyam answered in a heartbeat. "It would have changed everything."
Finally you stared back into those piercing yellow eyes and you knew, you'd have your happy ending.
