This blog is dedicated to my beloved AU in which the kaiju of the Godzillaverse are instead mutants, humans that have been changed and warped as a result of the use of nuclear energy and war machines. There's also a bit of a long running storyline unlike the actual movies which can be a bit separated form each other.
So ... I ended up finishing that thing I started writing a while ago and now the first fic I've posted to Ao3 in several years is a semi-smutty fic about my Godzilla AU.
If you're interested, go read it here.

This is another instance of something seeming terrible when I wrote it, but after some time, revisting, it's actually not that bad. A but awkward in some places, but not terrible.
It's the start of a fic that will explore the specifics of Junior and Leo's relationship that does turn smutty, but the smut is for the sake of exploring characters and relationship and I actually put a lot of thought into what Leo, a being with no secual organs who reproduces asexually, might get out of such a relationship. If that interests you and you like this beginning, let me know and I'll see about finishing it.
------------
Leo was busy discussing the preparations of an upcoming ritual feast when a handmaiden walked up and cleared her throat to get the spirit's attention. He turned to her, not feeling even an ounce of annoyance, as his duty as master and guardian of Infant Island saw many people needing him all throughout the day, making interruptions like this very common.
She bowed politely in greeting. “Your grace, you have a visitor.” She gestured towards the entrance, where a small body could be seen leaning up against a wall.
Minya didn't often come to the worship chamber. While he was thankfully beginning to grow out of his timidness, he had once admitted that the place was so special that he felt wrong being there. Leo had of course assured the child that he was more than welcome in his family's special place, but he still tended to avoid it if he could. So to see him there, wringing his scarf in his hands in his usual nervous fashion, Leo knew it had to be important.
“Thank you, I'll go handle it.” Turning back to the priest he had just been speaking to, “Go forward with that idea, see what can be done. I'll check in on the progress later, once this issue is handled.”
All present nodded and bowed once again in respect before heading off to tend to other matters, leaving Leo with the young mutant.
“Is everything alright Minya?” He made sure to keep his voice soft and kind as he approached the child, kneeling down once close enough so he wasn't towering over him. Not that that was quite as easy these days.
While still a bit underdeveloped for his age, Minya was shooting up quick, as most mutant children did. At a mere ten years, he was already beginning to match grown humans in height, and would likely surpass them quickly in the next few years. It warmed Leo's heart a bit to remember the scrawny, malnourished little thing he'd been when they'd first found him three years ago, and to see how much he's grown out.
But it isn’t the time to get overly nostalgic, as Minya turns wide, concerned eyes on him.
“I'm alright,” he admits, but instead of continuing just bites his lip and looks away.
He's not saying it, but the specification of his own state, and present concern, is all Leo needs to know what the issue is.
“Take me to him.” He insists, standing up and following behind as the child quickly begins scurrying off towards some far corner of the island. They travel along the line where the jungle turns into beach, making for faster travel. If he wanted this to be over even faster, Leo could just fly over, but Minya has never enjoyed the process, and he doesn't feel like troubling the child more than he already is.
As the sound of snarling and smashing begins to reach his ears, Leo can't help the soft, quiet sigh he releases under his breath. While it's been quite a while since the last time this happened, probably the longest since they began, it's still troubling that it's still happening at all.
Leo knows that recovery can be a slow, steady process, and that it's possible that complete recovery may never be entirely possible, but they've not been doing this long enough for him to come to terms with that.
They turn a corner when something heavy smashes into the boulder next to them, spraying debris everywhere. It's instinct that brings a brightly colored wing up, shielding himself and Minya from the onslaught. Bringing it back down, he takes in the scene in front of them.
The clearing is a mess of broken boxes and crumbled rocks, holes and trenches gouged into the ground and boulders shining with claw marks.
And in the middle stands Godzilla, huffing and snarling, his body tense and a little curled in on himself. A defensive stance, like he's expecting some kind of fight.
“Goji?” Minya calls out, his voice colored with concern. Leo doesn't like Minya having to see this, and he knows Godzilla likes it even less, but he won't deny his gratefulness of having him there when the man's gaze immediately draws to them. His chest expands as he takes a deep, slow breath, clearly trying to get himself back together in front of them, though still struggling to do so. In these moments he's his own worst enemy, and it will take a bit more to get him back to himself.
“Thank you for bringing me Minya,” Leo says and rubs his thumb into one of the boy's shoulders soothingly. “Why don't you go into town and play with some of the other children?”
Minya looks uncertain at the idea, looking between the aggravated mutant and the spirit. While bothered by the sight, he was clearly hesitant to leave his guardian behind in such a state.
“It will be alright, I promise. I'll help him.” With a confident smile, Leo turns the child and pushes him back the way they came, shooing him further when he still stumbled with hesitance. Finally Minya truly began to walk away, allowing Leo to turn back to the matter at hand.
“Are you good to go, or do you need a bit more time here?”
Still struggling with himself, with the heavy, heaving breaths, Godzilla seems to think to himself for a moment, though in his state it’s hard to tell if he’s actually thinking about Leo's question or arguing with himself more.
Been making characterization notes for this AU, so here's all the guys in the Godzilla line:
(Mutated Human) Gojira - The original monstrous mutant that revealed the existence of mutants to modern humanity. Not much is known about him. He’s Godzilla’s father, but the trauma of the whole event and his young age made Godzilla forget almost everything about him. His wife died in childbirth and while at first he had complicated feelings towards his monstrous newborn that took his wife away, he quickly grew past that and dedicated himself to hiding and protecting his child. He was slowly mutated over time due to exposure to Godzilla and the radiation that he had to consume for energy.
(Born Mutant) Godzilla - The Godzilla throughout the Showa and Heisei era events. The original ‘king of the mutants’. His earliest memories are fear and pain, though he doesn’t know exactly what the memory is, not realizing it’s memories of the rampage of the mutant known as ‘Gojira’, his own father. These early memories have become weak and lost due to the trauma of the event, but despite this he still had his father’s instance of staying hidden internalized and so spent years hiding from humanity. It’s not until he ran into Anguirus that he would become more widely known. While at first he had a lot of distrust and hostility towards humans for how they always tried to hunt down his kind just for existing, he did come to be more kind and protective of them, enjoying the attention he received as a kind of ‘protector’. Because of his ability to beat almost anyone, other mutants ended up flocking to him for protection and leadership. He was a bit goofy and cocky in his youth, but mellowed out a lot with age. When Mutant Island was destroyed in bomb testing, killing many mutants including his son Minilla, he lost all love and care for humanity, going back to resenting them, though now full of hatred. He no longer cared about being a ‘protector’, instead only doing what was needed to defend himself and his kind (all Heisei era enemies either attacked him or his son).
(Born Mutant) Minilla - Godzilla’s adopted son in the Showa era. While known for being a bit of a weak coward compared to his dad, he’s also known for being very kind and welcoming, especially to humans. In the split timeline, where he makes it to adulthood, he becomes a representative in human to mutant relations. He’s best friends with Baragon, mostly because they were the only children growing up on Mutant Island, and in the split timeline is a responsible and attentive older brother to Junior. While younger, he just kind of follows along with whatever Godzilla tells him, but as an adult he learns to stand his ground against him and the two often butt heads when it comes to decisions about the management of Mutant Island and relations with humans.
(Born Mutant) Godzilla Junior - Godzilla’s adopted son in the Heisei era and known as Godzilla throughout the Millenium era events. As a child, much like his brother Minilla, he was noted as being very sweet, kind, and especially friendly towards humans, though for him it has to do with having developed a close relationship with a human when he was born. When he was a teenager, his dad sent him away suddenly, not giving him much explanation. This was Godzilla not wanting him to see him slowly die, though the lack of explanation left a bit of an abandonment issue, especially after being given away by the humans as a baby. His subsequent death at the hands of Destoroyah and being brought back only to find his father dead, all after humans drew them to the fight, breaks something in him. He not only loses all trust in humanity, but others period, becoming extremely defensive and aggressive towards anyone. This negative state is what leaves him open to being possessed by Gojira’s spirit, having always had a spiritual sensitivity since birth. The efforts of Leo, Baragon, and Anguirus to bring him back to himself, at the cost of Anguirus’ own life, finally calms him down enough to stop going out of his way to pick fights and start to regain some trust, finding and taking in Minya 2 years later helping even more. The event that really seems to bring him some closure and relief is when himself, Leo, and Minya go back in the past, and he has the opportunity to interact with his dad again, in the end splitting the timeline and risking his own existence by warning them of the destruction, in order to save Minilla’s life.
(Born Mutant) Minya - Junior’s adopted son/brother(?) and known as Godzilla throughout the Legendary events. Was born during a very tumultuous time for mutants to exist, as a result of Junior’s rampaging causing tense relationships between humans and mutants. As a result of these tense relationships, his parents were killed, with him just barely managing to survive. Shortly after this he ran into and decided to stick with Junior, who at first allowed him out of pity, but very quickly came to care about him as family. Compared to Minilla who is cheerful but a coward in dangerous situations, he’s a very timid child, hesitant to speak up and very uncertain of things. This, of course, he does grow out of, thanks to both Junior and Leo’s influence. While he would never call them his dad’s, both Junior and Leo were very parental and influential figures for him growing up. This is why when he becomes an adult and takes on the Godzilla mantle himself, he’s both very aggressive in battle, but also very spiritual and careful about relations with humans.
You're just not a proper son of godzilla if a full grown kaiju doesn't wanna beat your child ass for some reason.
EDIT:
I thought about including Gabara, but that would be too many on Minilla's side. Though it does really just cement that everyone had it out for this poor kid.

I've been working out the timeline and ages for this AU and have accidentally made Rodan and Godzilla's beef in Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster even funnier than it already was.
Just a grown man who wakes up from being buried alive for 11 years, getting into a pissing match with an angry teenager, while a small magical child begs them to 'please stop your stupid nothing fight and actually come protect the Earth we live on'..
Idk if making art memes is considered lame now but idc, I rarely find ones I want to do so I made my own lol. I'll be reblogging it to my own art blogs for requests, but feel free to save & use if you wanna!

I was trying to rework some designs and these were the only two of the four that I liked enough to straighten up.
With Anguirus, I wanted to solidy his hair shape which usually just turns into a bunch if random spikes, and brought in some of the curve we see in his horns. I also wanted to bring in a bit of a longer face shape to match his long snoot.
For Minilla, I've drawn him a lot, but I've never been fully satisfied with his design. Big thing was fixing the eyes and mouth, which are the most stand out parts of his otherwise plain design. I also wanted to make his hair a bit shorter, mostly taking away those curl bangs since I've since given those to Baragon.
The two I ended up scrapping were Biollante and Destoroyah. With Destoroyah, I've decided, doesn't get a human design and instead will just stay a demon looking thing, cause I just can't seem to figure out how to translate the design while still keeping it intimidating. Biollante, though, I just need to take a different approach with. She's supposed to be a mutant who was originally a human who was mutated, rather than being born, so that needs to be more worked into her design, meaning I need to design her full human look first.

A very specific study of Leo and Junior for a very specific art piece.
Also some adjustments to Leo's design, like making the furry collar part of his body hair rather than part of his outfit and making his white patches look a bit like vitiligo.
