THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS at 30
âĄÂ âIt was my idea to release that film on Valentineâs Day.â â Jonathan Demme âĄÂ âThe scenes between Lecter and Clarice playâŚas if they were lovers.â â Ted Tally
The Silence of the Lambs dĂŠbuted in cinemas on February 14, 1991. Hannibal Lecter mentions Valentineâs Day â and considers sending heroine Clarice Starling âa wonderful Valentineâ â several times in the novel. (Unfortunately, these lines didnât make it onto the big screen.) 2021 marks the 30th anniversary of this iconic film and its âperverse sort of love storyâ in the words of Silence writer Ted Tally, whose screenplay won an Oscar.

30 YEARS OF THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS
released: feb. 14, 1991
YES!!! I paused at this moment to watch her expression and also later in the car with the âBride of Frankensteinâ reference... :))
Clarice 1x01 Review/Thoughts
Iâm going to keep this non-spoilery as possible.
What I liked
So my biggest fear with this show was that theyâd turn Clarice Starling, one of the best strong female characters in modern literature, into a Strong Woman. NOPE! DIDNâT HAPPEN! THANK GOD! Seriously, I love her. I said this recently, Rebecca Breeds is doing one hell of a good Jodie Foster impression while also making Clarice her own.Â
There was little to none of that âomg sheâs a woman in a male-dominated workforce, letâs keep drawing attention to it!â shit. I said recently that what SOTL (1991) did brilliantly was how it handled this subject subtlety and with dignity. Clarice is similarly doing a good job so far. Itâs there, itâs clear, but itâs not beating us over the head with it. Basically, this is not the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Clarice Starling. Thank god.Â
SPEAKING OF WHICH⌠yeah, I was shocked at how much I liked Paul Krendler. Rightio, letâs clarify that - heâs still a dick. But in the Hannibal book and movie he was such a one-dimensional cartoon misogynist, it was just ridiculous. Here.. heâs still a dick but a) his motivation isnât âwah-wah, Iâm a Man therefore I know best so SHUT UP, WOMAN!1!â, b) heâs just complex enough to make him a more three-dimensional character as opposed to âthe chauvinist jackassâ. If you are going to have an asshole lead character, you need to make sure theyâre not too annoying. So, bravo, Clarice writers! You made Paul Krendler⌠okay not likable but tolerable!
The editing really captures how it feels to be stressed out, and on the verge of having a panic attack.Â
What Iâm⌠conflicted on
Honestly, these arenât really âIâm conflictedâ reactions, theyâre more ââŚokay these are cool ideas, but are they actually going to go through with it?â reactions
Ruth Martin is.. definitely on the side of good but her methods are not the most moral. I like that and I appreciate that from a character-standpoint⌠but I do hope that Clarice calls her out on it in the future.Â
Iâm so happy to see Ardelia and that sheâs still good friends with Clarice. I am hoping that she gets to develop more as a character in this show, as opposed to just being âClariceâs friend who helps her outâ.Â
The scene with Catherine Martin was really effectively disturbing and made her extremely sympathetic. So.. hereâs hoping to a good resolution that doesnât end with âand then she died :/âÂ
What I hate and they need to quit doing
Okay, the Hannibal reference at the start I understand, and that was good. But thatâs enough. You want to be seen as your own thing? Then that is all I want to hear about him. No this isnât me being anti Clannibal. Itâs one of my favourite pairings. But I cannot stand it when shows reference characters they wonât (in this case, also canât) include.. and then go âPLEASE FORGET ABOUT THIS CHARACTERâS EXISTENCE!!â in the press. You put your Easter egg in, now move on.Â
The lotion scene was stupid. It was so stupid.Â
SLOW. DOWN. THE PACING. The fast editing makes sense when Clarice is bombarded with shit, it is not necessary for everything! Slow down, take a breather. Please.Â
You know, the strange thing is, while I didnât think of Dr. Lecter (aside from that one reference at the start), I kept thinking of the NBC Hannibal show. No, I was not deliberately trying to compare them. I loved Hannibal and I am enjoying Clarice⌠but there were just some aspects that did remind me of the former show. My opinions really are that simple and can co-exist. (And yes, I have read the booksâŚ)
So⌠overall, a pretty solid pilot episode, and despite my brief rants I am still engaged enough to want to keep watching and find out more! :)
Absolutely agree with all of this (with the exception of the Clannibal references, lmao... more on that later).
I think that this first episode was brilliantly adapted for the network that itâs on. While of course people are worried about Clarice becoming another procedural FBI show, I certainly believe that there was enough depth shown to highlight more subtle, Harris-esque details. The show was a bit over-explanatory, but for network TV, I donât think anyone can complain.
As for Rebecca Breeds, she is a fantastic Clarice. I was skeptical at first given the trailers, but her mannerisms and ability to show some vulnerability amongst the characterâs many strengths is incredible. I disagree with the reviews saying that Clarice is played as over-emotional; catching Buffalo Bill was not this transformative, entirely healing event for Clarice like some only-movie-watchers assume. Rather, it was an event that signified her ongoing plight: rather than be made whole once again and satisfied with the rescue of Catherine Martin (as Dr. Lecter makes note of), the lambs donât stop screaming. Starling is plagued by this compulsion to save, save, save, and thatâin addition to her revealing conversations with the good doctor and frightening experience with Jame Gumbâshe continues to be affected by her trauma. Brava to the show for conveying this despite some audience expectations.
Finally, onto the matter of the doctor himself... As everyone here knows, Iâm not anywhere near unbiased in my appraisal of Clannibal-related material. I unashamedly started laughing giddily in the first two minutes with reference to Clariceâs âlast therapistâ and screamed when their âintimacyâ was brought up. The gold add-a-beads were a nice touch, too. I donât think Hannibal should serve as a cute reference as he was a few times this episode (the âfirst principlesâ line, for example), but I also donât think he should be avoided entirely. As aforementioned, their conversations affected Clarice deeply; she thinks about him at least thirty seconds of every day canonically. I think it would be cool to show that a certain someone is keeping tabs on her and for them to make continual sly references of this ongoing occupancy in her mind, at least for those who do know Starlingâs decisions after seven years. (Hereâs one way I thought this could have been done this episode: at the end, when Clarice is giving the press conference and is being watched in the homes of characters like Ruth Martin, it wouldâve been really fun to see an over-the-shoulder shot of someone watching the report in a tastefully-appointed room with a glass of wine in view).
In sum, people shouldnât be so quick to judge this show based off of their perceptions of the movie The Silence of the Lambs. I know that people who have seen the movie rush to claim that Clarice canât hold a candle next to the cinematic masterpiece, but I dissent. I think Starling can excel on this platform as long as the writers continue respecting the Thomas Harris source material via style and script.
Because I already know itâs coming, a small PSA before Clarice starts, for those of you that watched Hannibal but are not familiar with the books.
A lot of Willâs character and some of the plot was taken from Clariceâs novels, so if thereâs similarities theyâre not âripping offâ or âstealingâ stuff from him, theyâre just pulling from the same source material
So if Clarice expresses acute empathy, has visions/full sensory flashbacks/dissociations/night terrors/sleepwalking, thatâs entirely within character
Hannibal wonât be in the show, but if they do things right heâll be evoked plenty, and either way there will be plenty of meta and Clannibal content floating around. Clarice is Hannibalâs canonical endgame relationship and people shipping it is not inherently âhomophobic towards Hannigramâ, nor does it diminish it for the timeline of NBC Hannibal, or any other such nonsense. Itâs possible to ship both, I know I do.
If youâve been around the fandom block plenty and want to add your own warnings, feel free.Â
Can we all collectively agree to give the new Clarice show a chance? Because this sounds great.

Any Valentine's Day after SOTL
Hannibal: **Gets Clarice some beautiful clothes/jewelry/dinner/whatever**
Clarice: so no head?
Part 2/2
Another conversation was coming, but it was avoided for the time being. Clarice showered in the guest bathroom; earlier, she had tried peering around the houseâstill mad but a bit embarrassed by the outburst. The door had been put back into place since she showered, and the water had been cleaned off of the floor. Hannibal was nowhere to be found. I really did it this time, she thought. Her body relaxed, and her face softened. She didnât think it was appropriate to laugh, but the thought still surfaced, prompting a sad smile. I pushed around the violent centerpiece of the FBIâs Ten Most Wanted list. And he just cried. Shithouse mouse. The smirk dissipated as she ruminated further... She had hit him. Being a domestic abuser wasnât just rude; it was boringly common.Â
She moved the thoughts about violence to the side and shifted her attention to the cause of the scuffle. I donât know what he expected. Hannibal knows the depth of my old relationship with Jack, as much as he hated him. He told me to say goodbye to my father, so why not Jack?
Your daddy and Jackie Boy arenât the same, she reminded herself. At this moment, she was both grateful and resentful that her internal voice of reason was that of her husband. At least it was helping her see his view. Okay, so the relationship isnât necessarily comparable. But why would he think I wouldnât come home? Did he really read my intentions so incorrectly?
Clarice laid awake in the guest bedroom for hours.
~~
Hannibal Lecter relies on his intuition; it may just be his most famous attribute. On rare occasion, though, his cunning will fail him. On the day that Jack Crawford died, it most certainly did.
However, he doesnât know that yet. Instead, he is reclined in repose at the seat of his harpsichord which he does not play. As he is off in one of the ill-visited quarters of the home, Clarice would be unable to hear the notes carrying from her position in the guest room; even so, he does not play. Hannibal gleaned a look of disgust and frustration from her earlier, and thus, he was certain his Starling would take flight by the morning for reasons known but difficult to accept. There is no reason for him to play.
Poised on the bench, he disappeared to his memory palace without struggle. The difficulty came when he walked down the halls, closing each door that had belonged to her. Hannibal contemplated as he walked: There is a certain symmetry to thisâan appreciable one. Clariceâs hotheadedness had been a defining feature of hers, whereas he relied on coolness. He chastised himself for his own emotional outburst; it was unlike him to breakdown, and though he had allowed himself to become vulnerable to his wife, with her likely departure, he had to withdraw from all this fragility. He had to shut down. He had to be the ice to meet her violent fire.Â
Thus, he closed her doors, sealing the emotional ties within each.
~~
Hannibal emerged at the sound of her voice. He had not heard her approaching in nor had he smelled her.Â
A few paces away from the harpsichord, Clarice stood. Hannibal had been contemplating whether to address her as Clarice (Perhaps too informal at this point...), Agent Starling (But even when she goes back, she wonât be an agent...), or Miss Starling (Ummmm, I donât like this one very much...) when she interrupted.
âHannibal,â she started.Â
âAh.â He paused but spoke again before she could continue. âI see youâve finally decided to join me. Had enough tossing and turning up there, or did you come down to use me as your personal punching bag again?â
âNo, no. I just think-â
He cut her off again. âYou know what I think, Ex-Special Agent Starling?â Oooh. That works, he thought. âWell, actually I wonder. I wonder if that was how Daddy took care oâ Mommy when she wouldnât shut âer yap.â His imitation of her accentâwhich she had long abandonedâmade her flinch. âIf Ma didnât have dinner on the table at five-o-clock, yes siree, sheâd be in some kinda trouble. And boy, does Clarice still wanna be like her Daddy! No matter what,â he emphasized with a drawl, âsheâs gonna stand by him. It sure do seem that way tuh me!â Hannibal smirked, and his face betrayed no warmth.
The room had felt colder to Clarice when she had walked in. She had expected him to be upset, but she hadnât expected this. The woman paused and considered the implications: her musings were correct. He really did misread her, and now he was trying to drive her away. Well fuck that.Â
In their years of marriage, the couple had picked up on a few of each otherâs traits. For one, Clarice was not going to allow a bit of intimidation break her. He came close to doing so in Baltimore, but he would not again. She steeled herself, adopting a bit of his icy demeanor.
âNo, Hannibal. My father did not hit my mother. I think I wouldâve told you by now, donât you?â
He didnât answer right away; rather, he just pursed his lips and smiled.Â
Then, he began: âAs you know, I donât try to predict you because it often proves fruitless.â He looked off before setting his gaze squarely on her. âHowever, considering these... outbursts of yours and the contempt plain on your face, I have bought you a ticket back to Arlington in time for dear Mr. Crawfordâs funeral. For my safety, I will also be leaving, but not to Virginia. I know how much you must miss Jackie; please, give him my regards when you go. Maybe if you scream and pound on his grave hard enough, someone will hear and theyâll finally find you... Three years after you were reported as a missing person.â Lecterâs eyebrows shot up, and he shrugged. âThough I doubt youâll be reinstated, as you havenât kept your resume up to date. It will be no problem for you, though, Clarice.â He gave her a kind, patronizing look. âYouâre a very smart girl. When you rediscover that the FBI has no use for your intelligence, try showing off your trophies from the firing range. Maybe even tell them about your skills in hand-to-hand combat... I could write you a glowing reference!â
Hannibal was perfectly still in his seat with his wife just beyond him. He waited patiently for her to break. He wanted no end to be left untied when she left. Your turn.
âI see you still try and lick tears after youâve tired of tasting your own.â Clarice took a slow step toward him. She needed to crack his facade quickly. âFortunately or unfortunately, I have no intention of moving back to the States. I find that Iâm quite happy right here.â
Only she could have noticed the slight twitch of the doctorâs right eye upon this admission. And she did.
Starling inched closer. âNow, about this âcontempt plain on my faceâ...â She mirrored his voice and flat expression; her imitation was even better than his had been. âDid ya happen to consider that itâs because you just tried to tear me apartâunsuccessfully, I might add? Let me tell you what I know, Doctor.â She hammed up the formality in her tone. âI know youâre not comfortable feeling worried about another person. I know that you felt vulnerable when I was gone, and I know you didnât like that.âÂ
She paused, remaining collected. She raised her voice a tad for this last bit. âLastly, I know that you ASSUMED. And if there is oneâjust one!âgood thing that goddamned Jack Crawford taught me over the years,â she laughed, âitâs that, when you assume, you make an ASS out of U and ME. Trust me, baby, you did just that. And despite what your intuition told you, Iâm not going anywhere.â
She did it. The true stoicâs face had broken, and Hannibal the Cannibal sat, dumbfounded. He opened his mouth and then closed it. She continued.
âIâm sorry that you misread my motivations. I spent yesterday reflecting on how I had gotten to this point, and I had come home feeling glad. I was planning on going upstairs to find you, drawing a bath for the both of us, and then dancing later on in the evening. Your assumption got us a bit sidetracked, though.â Looking down at her watch, it was 2am. Holy crap. She focused back on him and noted that he was still unmoving but appeared less rigid than before. The room felt like it had finally warmed up.
Clarice took a last step towards her husband. Now above him, looking down, she said, âI am sincerely sorry for hitting you, Hannibal.â
Finally, he stirred. âClarice, I have not once so much as laid a finger on you in anger...â
âI know. Ironic, right?â
âI donât think so.â
His wife smirked at that, and he returned the favor. âNo, I guess you wouldnât. Anyway, Iâm sorry. It wonât happen again. You know what else wonât happen again?â She held his chin and spoke softly. âYou doubting us. Iâm with you for the long haul. Where the hell did you even think I was going?â
âUmmmm. To be candid, Iâm unsure of what I thought your plan was. I assumeddddd,â he looked up at her teasingly, âthat you were leaving because of a change in heart.â
âMy, Dr. Lecter, you didnât have every one of my steps planned out before I could even think of them? What have I done to you?â
âI can now definitively say that you bring out the worst in me.â
Clarice laughed and sat down next to him. âCrying? And worrying?â She was feeling more relaxed, placing her hand on his leg as she started laughing harder. âWhy am I not surprised that you consider that to be Hannibal Lecter at his worst?â
Her husband just smiled back at her. She saw his cheeks blush almost imperceptibly, which then prompted a further fit. It wasnât long before they were both laughing.
âYou had better... go back... into that memory palace of yours... and open up my doors ASAP,â Clarice ordered while catching her breath.
âAnd how did youâ?â
âYou were sitting on that bench for quite a while before I called out to ya. Try not to forget about me so soon, huh?â
âI wouldnât even think of it.â Never again, he added silently. âBut I must ask... Would I be incorrect in assuming you still want to dance?â
Clarice smiled widely. Hannibal shifted in his seat and began to play.
Hi there, I really admire your writing style! Do you think you can write an angsty argument one-shot between hannibal and clarice? Its hard for me to picture those two ever having a serious argument lol thanks!
Part 1 of 2Â
Hours had passed, and Clarice had not yet come home.
Her husband cooked dinner, read, watched the news... He tried to distract himself from the gnawing of her absence but was failing miserably. It all seemed so incredibly domestic, and yet it wasnât. Dr. Lecter was just worried about his precious Starling as any fawning spouse would, but he knew her reason for not returning was far more complex than working late hours at a job or getting caught in traffic. She had been liberated since their days at the Germanâs house, yet her internal monologue debating good and evil would not be silenced. No matter how much he blew in her chrysalis, Clarice Starling was Clarice Starling.Â
And now Jack Crawford is dead, just as dead as her daddy. And she left because of it.
Hannibal pressed his lips together softly while sitting in the kitchen and tried his best to have an objective thought. Iâve really gotten too attached to her. He laughed. Thatâs quite the understatement. Quickly, though, his laugh lines faded and were replaced with a worrying frown. It had been six hours since sheâd left, and there was no crossbow that could bring her back if she had indeed left for good. Her unpredictabilityâthough usually funâwas now deeply troubling. The doctor speculated about what Clarice would or could have done since she grabbed her purse and her wallet (IDs and passports always at the ready) and walked out the front door. He was really getting scared now, pushing back thoughts of a life not worth living. He didnât know how long he was seated here, but nothing interrupted him until the squeak of the door.
Starling entered, leaving her shoes in the entrance closet and moving to walk upstairs without a word to Hannibal. Still sitting in the adjoining room, he listened and walked through his plan for this scenario. He was going to walk up to her quietly and ask her how she was feeling. He was going to touch her only if she welcomed it. He was going to make sure his wife was truly home.
But, as he rose from the chair and rushed into the foyer, the plan was abandoned. Seeing Clarice soaking wet from the rain with slightly puffy eyes over Jack Crawfordâof all people!, he thoughtâmade him lose it. The objectivity was gone, replaced by worry, anger, and hurt.
âDo you have any idea how long youâve been gone?â
âIâm not a child, Hannibal.â
âYouâre drenched! Christ, Clarice, you could catch your death on a day like today... Out for seven hours in the sleet! And about Jack Crawford? A mentor stands by their student to help them grow. Jack Crawford marked you as deplorable long before Paul Krendler came for your career, Agent Starling...â He drew out the syllables, and he started again, this time his voice much louder. âWhat are you mourning him for? What more could you want here, from me? What do you want from him?â
Clariceâs eyes bore into his frantic pinwheels. She saw desperation and anger. She did not see sympathy.Â
âHonestly, what the fuck, Doctor? I may be here with you, but that doesnât mean Iâve forgotten myself. You know that better than any frigginâ person on this earth. Iâm not expecting ya to have empathy for me, but could ya at least take a step back and try to fucking understand? Let me get the fuck upstairs and leave me alone.â She started to walk, but Hannibal reached out and gently stopped her arm.
âPlease, Clarice...â his muscles tensed. âEnlighten me with why you must grant Jackie any of your own understanding.â He looked at her, teasing. Mean. âI hardly see how he deserves it. A manipulator with a worse record of it than my own, one who abandoned youânot only ten years agoâbut within the past few years, as well.â He paused, trying to think logically but failing. Her face was plain with confusion and frustration. She really had been thinking of leaving. He didnât understand why but didnât stop to contemplate it. Now Hannibal was screaming.
âWhere are the search committees? Where are the news articles enlisting help in finding the precious kidnapped FBI agent? He knew where you were, Officer Starling. He didnât know what I would do with you, but he knew you were with me. And he didnât care at all.â
âEnough of this shit! Donât you think I know that already? Leave me the fuck alone.â Dr. Lecter moved closer, clearly intending to continue probing, but Starling blocked it. She grabbed the arm with which he was holding her wrist, andâwith hands planted on his chestâslammed him against the closet door. Hannibal flinched as he hit the door hard, knocking it out of the sliding track with his weight. The door was off and pinned between the man and the closet wall. The act lasted but three seconds.
When he stood, Hannibal looked at Clarice and blinked. She stared back at him, eyes alight with rage. She looked like she was going to hit him again until she surveyed the damages to the closet and then looked back at him. He no longer looked surprisedâjust sad and disappointed. His eyes welled.
She almost left me.
And sheâs ready to do it again.
âI didnât think you were going to come back.â
A tear dropped. Clarice did not acknowledge it. Without a word, she turned and went up the staircase, leaving a trail of water that had dripped from her still-sopping clothes.
Iâm really kind of worried that the Fannibals will treat CBSâs Clarice like the BBC Sherlock fanbase treated CBSâs Elementary. so remember, kids: you can have multiple adaptations of the same media
and enjoy each and every one
there have been 5 Hannibal Lecterâs, 3 Will Grahamâs and 3 Francis Dolarhydeâs spread out amongst the big and small screens and now there will have been 3 Clarice Starlingâs.
Iâve enjoyed all of them and I will check out, and likely enjoy CBSâs take on Clarice too.
^^ If I hear one more fannibal complaining about Clarice, I might scream. NBC Hannibal was a beautiful show, but itâs not the end-all-be-all of Thomas Harrisâ franchise! Just be grateful weâre getting new material, especially with our favorite little Starling. :,,)
what do you do with all your rage,
                            clarice?

Hannibal: Fucking superb, you funky little FBI agent.
love your writingđ¤
Thank you so much! Iâm much obliged.
Most of what Iâve written was done a few years ago, though, and I think Iâve improved considerably as a writer since then. Feel free to drop me an idea or prompt so we can test that. ;)
