Another map. This one shows the growth of religion in the colonies from 1660 to 1770. In a great many cases a person’s religion had as much of an impact on whether they were a Patriot or a Loyalist as did their politics.

For example, in the North the vast majority of Anglicans were Loyalists while the Congregationalists were mostly Patriot. In the South most of the Baptists were either strictly neutral or Tory, while the Anglicans were Patriot (different flavors of Anglicanism in the South). 

The Presbyterians were almost all Patriots, which led some commentators to refer to them as “black-hearted Presbyterians” or to the Revolutionary War as a “Presbyterian War”.
