So apparently, over the summer, Quibi (the shortest-lasting streaming service ever lmao) did a quarantine project called “Home Movie: The Princess Bride” where a bunch of celebrities recreated The Princess Bride in tiny chunks at home.
And like there was no permanent cast, all these celebrities seem to have gotten a scene or part of a scene to do (i’m not sure exactly, I did not ever watch Quibi and thus haven’t seen this yet), and then they just… recreated it as best they could. At home. Under quarantine.
So like, you had Jennifer Garner in a blanket cape playing Princess Buttercup AND the Booing Old Woman with a crowd comprised entirely of stuffed animals:

But my absolute favorite part of this thing that I’ve sadly never seen but assume is probably absolutely hilarious and a treasure and I want to find it some day and watch the whole thing… is that Carey Elwes is in it.

Is this a joke? because 20 minutes is about the amount of sun exposure you should ideally be getting UNPROTECTED to make Vitamin D if you’re light-skinned. If you’re darker-skinned you need more, maybe even up to an hour. And that’s midday sun. There is absolutely no reason to “protect” yourself from the sun early in the morning or in the evening. Letting early morning light hit your bare skin and eyes prepares your body for more intense sun exposure later in the day.
The sun’s rhythms govern all terrestrial life, and our bodies evolved to utilize its various wavelengths. Treating the sun as a deadly laser is about the worst thing you can do for your health.
Oh boy there is something very insidious about advocating for darker skinned people to spend more unprotected time in the Sun, especially when detecting skin cancer is already so biased towards light skinned people and leads to many poc going unchecked for skin cancer until it’s already too late.
I’m not saying it was a deliberate act of racism, but that’s why it’s so insidious, because it happens without conscious thought; this is a pretty good example of how racism slips into literally every aspect of daily life without people even noticing. If you need more Vitamin D, supplements are good enough. They work for people who live in countries that already don’t get much sunlight. If you are dark skinned, do NOT spend an hour in the Sun unprotected, use sunscreen and stay in the shade.
Here’s an article on the signs of skin cancer in people with all skin types, and why it’s a complete misunderstanding that people with more melanin don’t need as much sun protection.
Every single article about skin cancer advocates for UV protection no matter what your skin type is. They do not think that “natural” Vitamin D is worth the risk of dying.
Ok I was going to put this in tags but realized that this needs to be a post! So here's your PSA on why you should wear sunscreen starring me and my skin cancer story!
I grew up in the South and my whole family has a history of skin cancer, for reasons that will be immediately apparent when you see my pasty ass face. At the age of 36 I finally booked a visit to a derm because 1) I needed to and 2) I had a lil tiny persistent red spot on my face. Thanks to a random post on the skincare subreddit years ago, I knew that redness and flaking around the edges was potentially cancerous, so ya boy saw the derm. (Putting read more here for pics)
What did it look like? Thanks to my proof of life gym selfies, I have examples!

That shit was like. Half a penny in diameter. I thought it was just redness until the flaking - so I took my ass to the derm.
Sure enough it was skin cancer! The most common one: basal cell carcinoma. The doc was impressed I noticed it so early, so everyone please note that I got a good grade at the derm, something that is both good and possible to achieve.
To remove it they did something called MOHS surgery, which is basically marking a circle around it plus room for the margin and carving that shit out of your face with electricity. Once it's gone, they check the edges to see if there's any cancer there, and you just vibe on the chair. (Bring an audiobook!) If there's cancer at the edges, they cut a larger hole, and repeat until no more cancer.
I was lucky and they got it all on the first try. Because they cut in a circle, they make to make the wound a diamond to close it without wonkiness. I will spare you the Wound Picture (spoiler: it's meat!), and here's me stitched up.
First of all, yes I know it rocks cock. Classic anime samurai scar right?! Do NOT LET THAT STOP YOU FROM WEARING SUNSCREEN!!! The goal here is to show you that the scar will be bigger than you think!!!
It healed really well and now I get to have a Mysterious Scar that I get all shifty and Mysterious about when people ask, which is pretty enriching tbh.
Why am I sharing this? This is a GOOD STORY WITH A HAPPY ENDING. I wear sunscreen regularly - but I got skin cancer anyway. But because I caught it early and went to the derm promptly(ish), they were able to handle it in one visit. I had my one year checkup recently and I'm golden. I get to have my anime ass scar and be there with my family and friends and have my life!
TL;DR: wear sunscreen, familiarize yourself with what skin cancer can look like for your skin tone (resources inline above!!!), and go to the derm. The world needs our tumblrinas happy healthy and thriving!!!!!!
