Because Tumblr lets me actually do long posts.
I’m not sure of any of you guys have noticed, but I’ve been extremely MIA for the past 2 weeks… and that’s cause things kinda took a turn for the worst IRL.
My cat, Zumi, ended up getting really sick starting last Sunday (The 7th), and we couldn’t figure out why (like throwing up bile, not eating, very lethargic). We ended up taking him to the vet Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and I even took a night off of work (which if you know me, know I never do).
He had X-Rays, Bloodwork, medicine given, and eventually an ultrasound at our emergency vet… And that’s when we finally figured out what was wrong.
Long story short, he had a blockage in his small intestine, and it was going to need to be removed otherwise he was only going to get sicker.
With some hard conversations (for logistical reasons) we decided that he would have emergency surgery despite finances. That happened Wednesday the 10th— to have the obstruction removed. Turns out it was a piece of rubber that he chewed off of a slow feeder mat. We’re pretty certain this piece of rubber was stuck inside of him for months before it finally processed to a point where it would hurt him. In fact, that rubber punctured his small intestine, meaning that he had to have internal and external stitches.
He was brought home on happy drugs last Friday, and has been recovering with close moderation/extra care until his stitches are removed. He will be fine.
But yeah, I am just ever grateful for my family and friends for the support, and the veterans that took such good care of him. I let my discord know a week ago, but I wanted to let everyone else know because I have found my own kind of mental block (like with writing) due to being so stressed/stretched thin with this situation. When he was in and out of the vets I didn’t sleep much. I live alone so taking care of him while working full time has just been very time consuming in the aftermath.
The most important takeaway though is that Zumi is on the mend, and is rocking his Dino onesie. I had a goal to get a chapter out in September/start up my posting schedule, but with this taking up multiple of my weekends that might be impacted now to where I start up October. But my goals stay the same in regards to becoming consistent again.
And lastly: as a PSA to my fellow cat owners, always be mindful of the things that your cat can get into— even if it’s designed for them. I would make the mistake of leaving his lick mat out even when I wasn’t home, so that’s when he got to it. Also according to the Emergency Vet: the number one thing that causes blockages in cats is normally strings or hairties that ball up in their intestines. Cats will eat strings if they are left out for them. Always be careful, your fur babies are forever little toddlers that don’t know how to take care of themselves. 😭🫶
But yeah, we live and we learn. Enjoy some photos of Zumi.
