Lucy's been traveling through the wastelands for months. She's met a buttload of different people and had a buttload of different experiences throughout that time - including nearly being tortured to death by the Legion and saved by the NCR.

And Hank doesn't ask her about any of that. He doesn't think he needs to, because to him, Lucy isn't a person who has experiences of her own and can make her own conclusions. She's his - emphasis on his - child. Easily frightened, ruled by her emotions, and desperately in need of his guidance. If anything she says disagrees with him, it's just because she doesn't understand. All he has to do is feed her some of Daddy's Homespun Wisdom, and she'll come right around.

To an authoritarian parent, you will never be a "real" adult. Sure, you'll gain a certain amount of responsibility and independence, but your life still doesn't really belong to you - it belongs to them, the new "superadult", who maintains all of the intellectual superiority they assumed over you in your childhood. Every choice you make will be subject to scrutiny to ensure that it meets with their standards and values, and if it doesn't, that just proves that you aren't as competent as you think you are, and need their guidance even more. A simple disagreement turns into an entire battle of wills between the oh-so-wise "parent" and their stubborn, irrational "child".

Immediately, I hurt my own heart when I thought what if Maximus's mom painstakingly crafted a little teddy bear to look like him as a baby and it was one of the things she made sure he took with him into the fridge?
