i do still think that getting a broad coalition of people to boycott the harry potter show for just the first teo weeks would accomplish a lot more than getting a small number of people to agree to a scorched-earth policy of disengaging 100% from harry potter and not even making hp-related jokes and references
like yes it is possible to get a large portion of trans folks and a handful of allies to completely disengage even from discussion and fanfic and secondhand merch. this has basically already happened. but youâre not likely to get the majority of normies/cis people on board with this even if you believe itâs morally correct.
like, the link i posted says that âtalking positivelyâ about harry potter constitutes supporting jk rowling in her transphobia. i do not think the average cis normie will think that sounds reasonable.
on the other hand! i think we could instead be focusing our efforts on pulling people away from spending their money on anything jkr will get royalties from. if we convinced a large number people to hold off on streaming the show for an amount of time â even just one week, hell, even just one day â it will make an impact that will send a message to both jkr and the studio that made the show.
but im not sure that folks are interested in that kind of organizing or impact. when hogwarts legacy came out there was a big push of âpirating it is equally bad,â but pirating it was not equally bad. because money talks and money makes decisions.
i understand that peopleâs goal is to make harry potter culturally irrelevant by disengaging, and i think it has been somewhat successful in lowering hpâs popularity but hp is still going strong. a concentrated concerted effort with an achievable goal is more likely to succeed than our current strategy.
however i think for a lot of people itâs not about strategy, itâs about moral purity.
