mostly I don't fault anyone for skirting jury duty because they truly do less than the bare minimum to compensate you for your time & transportation & circumstances and it's annoying as fuck. but it is also a big "put up or shut up" moment for your actual dedication to justice and care for your community. it's literally the government saying to you "hey come watch this trial and make sure our legal system is functioning justly and fairly."

This is true. But I also remember the time I was part of a criminal-trial jury, and after they sent us to deliberate it took about thirty seconds to agree the guy was not guilty, but the other people wanted to wait until the next morning to deliver the verdict so they could get a free day off work. I pointed out that meant the guy would spend another night in jail despite being not guilty and the other people seemed confused as to why I cared about that (except for the one man who said he believed the dude was guilty but that the state hadn't proven its case, and that keeping him in jail one more night was "what he deserved".)

i stopped giving a shit about "legit" purchases of digital products after i spent $80 on the entire Dark Horse collection of Trigun/Trigun Maximum ebook mangas, learning that I only got access to reading them through a proprietary website ereader function, couldn't download them, and couldn't get a refund, and then literally only a year later, getting an e-mail stating that Dark Horse was shutting down that part of their company and I wouldn't even be able to read them anymore. Pirate shit. Don't feel bad for it. It's not "your fault" that artists, independent or otherwise, can't make a living. You downloading an album or ebook for free isn't the cause of the problem. The cause is capitalism, plain and simple, and pirating is a lucky loophole that companies are still trying to stomp out.

it's not surprising, of course. to many, a dog being euthanized for attacking a person is a tragedy. poor thing was in a bad environment you see, it didn't deserve to die. and to many, every criminal should be put to death. they are inherently cruel and cannot change, any sentence more lenient than death is an injustice to their victims. why might a dog maul someone? well clearly the poor thing was a victim, it was circumstance that spurred it to violence. why might a person mug someone? clearly they have a corrupt soul, incapable and unworthy of empathy. they were spurred to criminality by their own sick nature. so to say, in their eyes, a human criminal is less human than a dog
