In honor of Valentine’s Day... A Gentleman’s First Date Guide
I wouldn’t recommend having a FIRST date on Valentine’s Day (talk about pressure!) but if you must... don’t screw it up or you will always be remembered as the worst valentine’s date ever. See, pressure! Here’s a gentleman’s guide on what not to do and some pointers on how to make your first date memorable. Enjoy! 💋
  For the love of god do not wear a suit! Here’s what she’s thinking, “He loves himself! What is he over compensating for, and should I exit before or after my first drink???” Don’t even take her to a Michelin-starred restaurant (where a suit is required) on a first date, you are trying way to hard! Instead, wear something confident and sexy.
If you are picking her up, be a few minutes early and expect her to be running 10 minutes late. She will be surprised to see you but will respect you are punctual. Do NOT be late! You’ve known about this date for at least 24hrs so plan accordingly: she can be late, you have to be early. I know, but it’s true!
If you are meeting her, be a gentleman and do not make her sit at the bar waiting for you. Be early, get yourself a comfortable seat and a drink, and make friends with the bartender. This way, when she arrives (5 minutes late) and sees you chatting with your new friend, she’s comfortable and thinks you now own the place. Since you are already comfortable, stand up to greet her and the initial first awkward moment is over!Â
3. Brush Up on Gentleman 101
It’s not hard, yet for some unknown reason to mankind, it is often forgotten...Â
**Make a reservation! Open her car door, open the restaurant door. Place your hand on the small of her back and guide her to your reserved seat. Assist taking off her coat. If the hostess is not pulling out her chair, YOU pull out her chair. Hand her the menu first, have her order first. Order a dessert to share. **
Now I’m not saying you’ll ruin your chances with her if you are a complete ass and don’t do any of these things, but I promise she will notice. Better yet, the rest of the women around will notice and you’re looking like the perfect date! What does nike say? Oh yes.....JUST DO IT!
I get it, your pockets aren’t as big as our purse and it’s uncomfortable to have the mini iPad in your pocket, so take it out. It’s best to leave it out of sight; however, if you need to, place it on the side of the table face-DOWN, more importantly....silence the damn thing! Leave it unattended because I promise she will excuse herself to the ladies room sooner or later, and that would be a perfect time to check it. Nothing...get it...NOTHING is a bigger turn off than having your date on his cell phone!Â
5. Keep the conversation going
For every question she asks you, you ask her one. It shows her you’re interested and have genuine appreciation for other people. They may be cliche but they will work, here are 5 questions to keep your conversation going...
1.What is your favorite movie of all time? and why
2. What really makes you laugh?
3. What should I know about you that I would never ask?
4. Do you have a nickname? Where did it come from?
5. What is the most spontaneous thing you’ve ever done
If you absolutely can’t find anything else to talk about, It’s totally appropriate to talk politics and religion on a first date. Keep it light hearted and don’t hold anything she says against her. Under no circumstance should you talk about your ex or ask her questions about her’s. Newsflash!!! She’s on a date with YOU! Bringing up your ex will only have her secretly comparing herself. Steer the conversation in any direction other than exes.Â
It really is amazing how many guys think they get this, yet they really don’t. You always go in with good intentions but for whatever reason, guys think they are “fine”. Only 3 drinks! It may not sound like a lot but it’s a great way to pace yourself throughout the night. Want to get shut down later in the night..... getting too drunk is always a good way to do that!
Even if you waited an hour for dinner and never got that last martini, tip well! Assuming you are paying for dinner (which you should be or else insist!), tip at least 20%. Your date is noticing and there’s so much hidden meaning behind that tip....she wants to make sure you are not a cheap-ass, you appreciate good service and have pity when it’s awful.Â
She worked really hard to impress you, acknowledge it and your little compliment will go a long way. And please, say something other than, “You look nice”! What is wrong with you?!?! She has heard that a million times before so be more genuine than that.
