after thirty six trips around the sun, wesley still could never get timing quite right. there had been plenty of opportunities throughout the years - throughout that entire day, even - where he could have said the words, but instead he held onto them and carried them all the way to their front door. luggage draped near his feet after knocking on their door, soon realizing that the drinks he had downed at the airport bar were no longer buzzing throughout his system, thus making his confidence a bit more fragile than it had felt a moment ago. it was too late to turn back now, especially when the door was swinging open in his face. wes’ throat suddenly felt thick, and he sincerely hoped that the second that he opened his mouth that it wasn’t vomit that was coming out. “i couldn’t get on the plane,” wesley began as his fingers nervously knotted themselves through the strands of hair that laid at the nape of his neck, “i was staring at my ticket as it was boarding and i couldn’t figure out why everything felt so wrong. so, i came back to see you because you always knew how to make things right and then it hit me on my way here: your name wasn’t on the destination.” the word vomit might have been just as worse than actual vomit, but wesley was unable to hold back now that the floodgates had been opened. “and being some place without you in it isn’t somewhere that i want to be because… i’m in love with you.”

           there  was  nothing  to  prepare  emery  for  when  she  opened  the  front  door ,  even  as  she  tugs  the  night robe  tight  against  her  body  as  the  chilling  wind  blows  through  .  but  what  stills  her  heart  the  most   is  seeing  who  stands  there  .  ❝  wes  ?  ❞   there  is  a  passing  thought  that  this  is  some  messed  up  dream  and  she  was  due to  wake  up  any  second  .  after  all  ,  she’d  just  said  goodbye  to  him . she  closes  the  door  behind  her  ,  falling  into  the  space  of  the  small  patio  as   if  this  moment  was  some  secret  she’d  have  to  keep from  those  who  were  just  inside  the  home .  ❝ what  -  what  are  you  talking  about  ?  ❞   nothing  is  making  sense  -  his  words  or  the  way  he’s  fidgeting  -  so  she  stands  there  ,  listening  to  his  words  until  it  hits  her  .  ❝ no  ,  no  ....  you’re  not  making  any  sense ,  wesley . you  don’t  mean  it  .  you  can’t  mean  it  . ❞    maybe  there  was  a  time  when  she’d  been  the  one  to  have  confessed  her  love  for  him  like  a  sin  ,  but  it’d  changed  with  the  season  when  he  had  never  given  her  any  clue  that  he  felt  the  same .  she’d  moved  on  .  ❝ because  i  love  you  too  ,  you  know  that  .  you’re  my  best  friend  . ❞  tears  threaten  to  pour  over  as  emery  fumbles  to  find  the  right  words  .  ❝ you  should’ve  gotten  on  that  plane , wes . you  decided  to  leave  ,  to  start  a  new  life  .  i  cannot  be  the  reason  why you  give  that  up .  ❞

they’d  been  friends  for  years.  practically  diapers.  saskia  doesn’t  want  to  ruin  their  relationship  —  their  friendship  —  or  make  them  uncomfortable.  they’ll  push  her  away,  and  everything  will  be  ruined.  so  all  she  can  do  is  smile  and  pretend.  she’s  good  at  pretending.  “you   look   really   nice,”   she   says   with   a   small   smile.   it’s   true,   they   do.   part   of   her   wishes   she   could   just   get   up   and   kiss   them   ..   but   they’re   not   together.   they’re  not.  they’re   going   to   celebrate   a   friends   birthday,   carpooling   to   the   club   together   as   friends.   that’s all   they   are   —   friends.   but   she   can’t   help   but   look   at   them   like   they   hung   the   moon,   knowing   that   this   sort   of   pining   won’t   end   well   for   her.   “is   that   new?”

         emilie’s   feelings  were  complicated  -  more  so  to  do  with  the  never ending  cycle  of  anxiety  in  the  pit  of  her  stomach  but  the  more  she’d  tried  to  swallow  it  ,  the  more  it  became  unavoidable  .  the  very  saskia  laurent  who  had  a  tendency  to  be  so  concrete  and  festered  a  feeling  of  that  same  security  years  ago  now  made  her  nervous  .   ❝  what  ? ❞   emilie  is  taken  off  guard  ,    but  when  her  eyes  follow  to  where  saskia  was  looking  -    ❝  oh  ,   thank  you .  i -  ❞   a  blush  is  certainly  rising  to  her  cheeks  as  emilie  moves  to  flatten  the  material  of  the  dress  that  hugged  her  frame  .  little  thought  had  gotten  into  what  she  wore  or  even  how  she  styled  her  hair  -  but  the  relief  that  she  had  at  least  tried  settles  in .  ❝  it’s  new  enough  .  i  searched  and  searched  my  closet  for  something  to  wear  tonight  and  i  found  it  hiding  in  the  back  with  a  tag  still  .  ❞   instead  of  doting  on  the  compliment  any  further  ,  emilie  decides  to  turn  towards  her  best  friend  (  or  at  least  the  best  she  could  in  a  cramped  uber  ) .  ❝  and  you  ,  you  look  amazing  like   always  .    ❞   

       “  WELL…  I  JUST  THINK  THAT  i’m  the  better-looking  half  so…  you  should  cover  our  bill.  quoting  our  chief…  jake  lewis  is  10  out  of  10  and  therefore  y’all  have  to  cover  his  bills  from  now  on...  ”

           ❝  oh ?   i  must  have  missed  him  saying  that  -  somewhere  along  the  second  and  third  lager .  are  you  sure  that’s  not  the  beer  talking  ?   ❞   a  skeptical  brow  raises  but  the  taunt  playing  on  celine’s  lips  betrays  her  as  she  rests  the  now  empty  glass  back  on  the  stool .    ❝  you  are  lucky  that  it’s  pay  day  .  i’ve  got  some  spare  change  for  the  needy  and  i’m  feeling  philanthropic  .  but  does  this  mean  this  isn’t  the  last  time  we  share  drinks , then  ?  ❞
