Please, stop eating fish. The world’s stocks of seafood will have collapsed by 2048 at present rates of destruction by fishing. This means the ocean will be empty by 2048 if people don’t stop eating fish. The fishing industry is the biggest killer of animals in the world, more than 1 trillion fish die each year. Please ask yourself if your fish consumption is worth the total extinction of all marine life. Please stop eating fish and alert everyone you know what will happen if we don’t.

You should not eat less fish to stop overfishing. You should eat more sustainably harvested fish to stop overfishing. Fish is the best overall protein in the world for both health and environmental reasons. Unlike beef and pork it does not produce methane etc. Fish is lean and full of oils and omega 3s. The health benefits are easy to find anywhere online and well known. Let's get to the issue here--is not using a resource at all the best way to conserve it or is using a renewable resource responsibly the way to conserve it? When you eat wild sustainable seafood you are saying that you value that product and therefore you value the environment from which it came. I live in an Alaskan fishing town that thrives around a wild salmon fishery. That fishery is the basis of all our livelihoods and the economy here so we invest in it. We invest in it with science based management that ensures fish come back year after year. We invest our money and our time in habitat restoration, we fight hard for legislation that protects our oceans and coastlines. Why? Because we value these fish. The high price our seafood gets in the market trickles down into taxes and programs that pay for all these conservation measures. When you eat wild you save wild. We take short term cuts for long term gain and put the health of our fishery stocks first because we want our children to fish and their children after them. Not all fishing communities are like mine but we need to push for progress to happen in all fisheries around the world. Over 75% of the world relies on fish as its primary protein. If done correctly fishing can truly feed the world. When you support sustainable fisheries as a consumer you truly help change the market and in so doing create more opportunities for more fisheries to operate sustainability.
