Heracles-Vajrapani in Gandhara
Cultures (art, religion, architecture, languages, etc) have a long history of influencing each other through interactions on various scales and this transmission never fails to catch my eye and stir up a desire for more knowledge. Â Through the course of these blog posts I intend to look at such a connection, namely the Hellenistic influences through Bactria, Afghanistan, and Gandhara. Â This will be done by using Heracles and Vajrapani as foci. These two characters are intimately linked, to the point where they can be equated. Â I ask, why are they tied to each other? Â What is this based in? Â Where was this based, who took it there, and what happened as a result of this? Â I will look at how we can begin to address these questions and what comes from this topic of study.
A brief note: tumblr is not very kind to citations, so I have made a list at the end of this sequence of posts of the sources in the order I have referenced them. Â In text citations are not of proper form but they refer to the number that source is in the list followed by and relevant page numbers.
