At the very beginning of the creation of the Journey to the West tales, the leading character was originally Tang Monk【唐僧|táng sēng】. Originally, it was a story about a Buddhist monk attaining Buddhahood through a pilgrimage. Back then, Sun Wukong【孙悟空|sūn wù kōng】was merely destined to become a Bodhisattva at the end of the journey. However, the story of Journey to the West【西游记|xī yóu jì】is open to adaptation by anyone. Evidently, audiences grew far fonder of the monkey figure. Consequently, plotlines revolving around Sun Wukong kept expanding. Roughly four hundred years later, in the complete hundred-chapter printed edition of Journey to the West【西游记百回本|xī yóu jì bǎi huí běn】, Sun Wukong was titled the Victorious Fighting Buddha【斗战胜佛|dòu zhàn shèng fó】and turned into the core male protagonist of the novel.

Heracles and the Buddha
This is based on the fascinating fusion of cultures after Alexander the Great invaded India, otherwise known as Indo-Greek or Greco-Buddhism. In Gandharan sculpture, Heracles is depicted alongside the Buddha as Vajrapani, the Buddha's protector. The pairing of two figures so iconic in their mythologies seemed perfect material for art. The Buddha would help Heracles with anger management, while Heracles would help with clobbering evildoers. Business as usual.

Vajrapani Krodha ca. 1700
Wanted to make an SMT-esque demon design based off of a bodhisattva due to a dream I had the other day. I wanted a guy sitting as if in meditation, looking like an immovable guardian, and wielding a divine weapon; I landed on Vajrapani, and gave him a giant vajra for an arm.
Deities Who Guide Me | Wrathful Vajrapāni
Name: Vajrapāni (Vajra-Wielder)
Form: Wrathful protector
Appearance: Fierce expression, bulging eyes, flaming hair, multiple arms, wielding symbolic gestures and weapons. Crowned with fire, robed in red and gold, surrounded by smoke and power.
Symbols: Vajra (thunderbolt), flames, muscular form.
Role: Embodiment of the Buddha’s power. Guardian of the Dharma. Destroyer of ignorance.
Energy: Electrifying. Protective. Unyielding. The force that clears the path when compassion alone isn’t enough.
Mantra: Om Vajrapāni Hum: a call to awaken inner strength and dissolve obstacles.
Guidance: Vajrapāni roars. He reminds me that fierce compassion is still compassion. That protection is sacred. That sometimes, the path must be cleared with thunder.
