Kollaboration 2012 Boston - Vocalists: Andy Kim, K-Soul, and Yui Mugino collaborate on a happy-go-lucky, awe-inspiring rendition of Beyoncé's song, "Love on Top".
One of my fave and arguably the most popular of short films produced by Wong Fu Productions - entitled, "The Last".
*Side Notes: This particular short film also happens to feature my forever love-crush; the absolutely beautiful, multi-talented, epitome of divine perfection, Kina Grannis :). This, of course, is not to discount Mr. Harry Shum Jr. Harry - Naturally, you're extremely good-looking, charismatic, and quite multi-talented in your own right (not to mention, you're an amazing dancer), but, Kina has a slightly more stronger hold on my heart :P.
Chapter 18 - A Labor of Love or a Laborious Love?
Yes, I am well aware that I completely prefaced this post with a cover of a Beyoncé song :P. Yes, I posted that particular rendition of the song as a means to send my love to/pay homage to the Asian, Asian-American, and Asian-Pacific Islander community. No, I will not be writing an entire blog post about Beyoncé or her potential link to the Illuminati - as intriguing as she or that theory may be. In lieu of a personal anecdote on Miss "Sasha Fierce", I set my gaze towards a "Love on Top". Placing love, above all, as the top priority in one's life is an interesting notion and as such, this idea/love, in general, be the focal point of tonight's little rant/post/discussion.
Whereas I used to laugh in the past, out of cynicism and skepticism, now, I can't help, but, to think that my friend, Doug was/may be right when he so whimsically channels Bob Marley, casually bellowing out phrases like, "One Love" and "Love is the answer". As I grow older and see all of my friends around me getting married, starting a family of their own, and settling down into what is deemed "matrimonial bliss" - one by one, I think to myself: did I miss out on something important? I know that life isn't a race, but, why have I not reached that milestone in my life? Why am I not even anywhere remotely close to that stage in life? From a systematic, analytical approach, it's best to first understand love. How can we define love? Is love simply the antithesis of hatred? Is love truly the most desirable X-Factor; the one absolute, intricate power in this life that overcomes all adversity and which is capable of curing all ailments and resolving all conflicts (internal or otherwise)? Is it truly the end game/the ultimate reward in life?
Where do I even begin? I could pull a Wong Fu Productions (please refer to the short film up top) and reminisce about and regale you with tales of past love (i.e. people who, at one point in my life, I had fallen completely and madly in love with). Likewise, I could take a look at the people who, at one point in their lives, and for whatever reason, had become enamored by me. Along those lines, it is worthy of note that I've once totally been hit on by a balding, middle-aged, gay man, offering me both his business card and a free "trolley ride" (suffice it to say, I graciously accepted his business card, but, never did take him up on that trolley ride), a transgendered individual who had asked me if I do my nails, and a very drunk girl on a train who bore an uncanny resemblance to Rooney Mara's character from The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Lisbeth Salander - although, the girl from the train was not nearly as cool or badass as the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo; all intriguing stories, in their own right - but, I digress. I could do my best to shine a glorious light upon people in my life that I continue to and will always love. I could talk about what has or hasn't been, what is, and what could be. No, these instances of ideal, practical, impractical, mysterious, and/or strange "love" would span far beyond the realm of a single blog post. Perhaps, I should focus more upon how many serious, long-term, meaningful, lovey-dovey, romantic relationships that I've had the pleasure of been a part of? Oh, well, that one is easy: an unbelievable, whopping zero. You would think that someone like me: a genuinely caring, relatively intelligent, bold, outgoing, (again, relatively) young buck with a decent sense of humor would be able to find love with ease or at least, love would find me. No...not so much. Now, there within, lies the fundamental question: why? Why does my heart grow old, bitter, and frigid as I continue to tread through life alone, whereas, the majority of my friends and loved ones are all happily sharing life with their hearts' counterparts? Do I not have a counterpart- dare I say, "soulmate" in this life? Am I no longer relevant in the grand scheme of life? Am I just not wanted? Is there something about me that repulses others? Is there something that I Iack? Do I not deserve love? Am I just not good enough to be loved? I've been praised with words such as: smart, sweet, funny, and caring - all of which, seem to be followed by an invisible, unspoken, "but". Aren't these desirable characteristics, though? Are they not enough? Am I not smart, sweet, funny, and/or caring enough? If I truly do possess these distinct character traits, do I need something more? Am I not successful and/or wealthy enough? By "Asian standards", I'm a failure at life and this has become painfully clear. In other words, no, I'm not an omnipotent, omniscient, multi-billionaire, doctor/lawyer/professor/philanthropist/Ruler of the World, making at least a ten-figure salary. Am I just not good-looking enough? On one hand, I have been called "cute" (on more than one occasion, nonetheless). Likewise, to my own disbelief, especially, because I definitely do not possess an Adonis body, a friend once stated that I have a "great body". I still and always will blush at the thought. Quite flattering and just as much as a great ego booster, another friend of mine once even referred to me as "delicious". Then again, my own mother consistently tells me that I'm ugly and too skinny. More times than I would like, she declares that I look more like a teenage boy than a grown man. Asian genetics, I swear. Do I not possess enough self-confidence/self-esteem? This one is definitely possible as I'm quite self-deprecating, so much, in fact, it's pretty much to the point of self-loathing. Do I blame society? With a constant barrage of stereotypical tropes and caricatures (i.e. an overabundance of images, depicting Asian males as these buck-toothed, frail, sickly, emotionless, broken English-speaking, dorky, whiz kid, bookworm, code-breaking, mathematical geniuses/computer gurus with taped bifocals and suspenders pulled up to their necks, who may or may not know some form of martial arts, and/or who just happen to secretly be evil gangsters), as well as distorted, misrepresentations of the Asian male as these effeminate, weak, desexualized beings, among a sea of "small penis" jokes, it certainly doesn't help. Likewise, articles like this or this, essentially stating that Asian males are among the least desirable/sought after people - dating-wise, are disheartening, to say the least.
Do I blame myself? Is it because I think of love and long-term/permanent, meaningful relationships as being synonymous, rather than love being just a series of random, lustful, booty calls? Is it because when I think about dating and love, I do think long-term, and by doing so, I simply don't allow myself to relax and experience life in the moment? Is it because my standards for myself and others are too extravagantly high? Do I not give certain people a chance because I don't want them to suffer through the sheer lunacy of my dysfunctional family, as I myself, can barely handle that burden as it is? Do I distance myself from others? As some people claim, am I not "putting myself out there" as much as I should? Do I just not have any game? Am I over-thinking/over-analyzing things? It's possible. All in all, the reason for love being non-existent in my life is more than likely a not-so delectable blend of many of the fore-mentioned elements. In reality, it's a bit ironic that I'm even writing about love because I know very little, if anything about it. Love has always been a bit of an enigma to me. I can't define love by familial love - because if you even remotely know me and/or have followed my blog, family and my relationship with my family is complicated, at best. I can't accurately describe love, in terms of "romantic", swooning love either because I've yet to fully experience that type of love firsthand. The only love that I've really known is the love of friendship. In that particular regard, I've truly been blessed. Friends, although, they seem to grow distant as we age, have always been a positive driving force in my life. In fact, sometimes...a lot of the time, I feel as though my friends are the only tangible source of concrete positivity that I have in this life/the only thing that I really have going for me. I think that I'm a little afraid as I feel the strength of that love fading...or maybe not fading per say, but, more like moving farther away from me. This is most likely why a part of me, admittedly now yearns for love (and I say that in the most thoughtful and genuine; least sappy/creepy/desperate - not intended to make me out as a huge lonely loser- type way possible). A part of me likes to think that it would be nice to be completely vulnerable with someone - no filter or masking of emotions, without any pretense or judgment. It would be refreshing to experience an breakable bond of joy with someone where a mere smile, hug, and/or kiss can dissipate all signs of fatigue and distress. Maybe, I'm just a hopeless Romantic living in an ideal, fantasy world, going from one day to another, as I march through an endless field of dreams. Who knows?
One thing that I do know is: love has certainly done a phenomenal job at bewildering me, if not, eluding me altogether. Hopefully, that will all change soon. Until then, I look towards guys like Harry Shum Jr, Jeremy Lin, and Yul Kwon who all have and continue to shatter negative stereotypes warping the Asian/Asian- American male identity. I look towards them for inspiration, as I continuously strive to improve myself - all in the name of love.
Chapter 17: 2014 - Year of the Horsey
Yes, I know that I've probably said this 943,345,843 times in the past (by the way, yes, that is an accurate count), but, I WILL update this blog at some point this year :P! In fact, it is one of my unofficial New Year's resolutions. I say, "unofficial" because I still am unsure if I really buy into the entire concept of New Year's resolutions/the idea of establishing these ridiculously high expectations and outlandish goals to attempt to accomplish within a designated time frame. Don't get me wrong. I'm all for setting goals, especially, in the pursuit of continuous self-improvement and character development. It's just that I feel that if I were to fully embrace the idea of New Year's resolutions, I would be preparing myself a dangerous cocktail of failure, misery, and self-defeat. Hell, that already sounds too much like the story of my life. Plus, like many others, I've never been a fan of and was never on good terms with time. In any case, I again, sincerely apologize to all my "followers" and fellow Tumblr-maniacs for the lack of updates on my Tumblr page. I can assure you that this blog has served (and hopefully, will continue to serve as) an amazing venue/canvas for personal expression; an organized chaos of my thoughts. It really is my "secret love-child" that I hold dear to my heart, yet, that I, unfortunately, am not able to put as much time into. Nevertheless, I do hope that I can help nurture it and help it along to grow into something beyond just me and/or solely fellow Asians and Asian-Americans. Simply-put, though: life happens. A lot of things have transpired in my life thus far and I will do my best to share what I feel is my most intimate and significant thoughts and experiences. In the meanwhile, though, Happy Asian/Lunar New Year, Everyone! May you always be blessed with high spirits, good health, food, and company (with the occasional, lucky red envelope thrown in here and there for good measure :P). May your life also be rich and vibrant in the realms of eternal love and friendship. As lame and overly-cliché as it may sound: never forget to smile, laugh, dance and sing. Go buck wild! Reconnect and stay connected with old friends and those who you truly treasure and appreciate in your life. Likewise, cast away self-doubt and never fear to transcend limits, especially, in regards to the pursuit of continuous self-improvement. 2014: Year of the Horse. Giddy-Up! To commemorate horses and ponies everywhere, here are some dance vids incorporating some representation of the horsey:

Chapter 16 - Page Redux
Hi Tumblr-Maniacs! Don't worry. I am still alive and kicking :P. I profusely apologize (again, for the 9,874,935,743th) time for anyone who has been following my page only to find accumulating layers of dust (i.e. no new posts). I haven't logged in for over a year now. In terms of social media, I've only really been active on Facebook, with occasional quips here and there on YouTube. I know that I have apologized on more than one occasion in the past (both here and here), but, please accept my sincerest apologies. It's 2012 and I will hopefully have many new updates to share (both here in the Tumblr realm and in my personal life). As always, I have a barrage of ideas (some good, others incredibly bad and potentially wrong) cascading in my mind. For starters, I'm contemplating on revamping my entire page and rewriting and/or finishing up my earlier posts. Yes, I know...it seems like a never-ending project for me. I'll even eventually touch upon why I haven't been updating my Tumblr as often as I would like. This all may not happen as soon as I would like it to, but, rest assured, it will happen; all in due time. Plus, I only have a limited amount of time, considering the world is ending and all, right (something about Armageddon 2012 and the Mayan Calendar) :P? In any case, I just wanted to quickly stop in and say hi. In the meanwhile, if you have any Asian-American-related anxieties and/or experiences that you wanted to share and/or discuss with me, or you simply wanted to say hi, feel free to contact me via e-mail (please refer to the right side of the page), ask me a question, or alternatively, you can find me on YouTube and/or Facebook. I hope all is well. Take care, everybody! -Rich

Chapter 15 - 2011: New Year, New Goals, New Projects, New Me?
I once again would like to apologize profusely for being away so long from the Tumblr community. I truly do hold this little space on the Inter-webs dear to my heart. It's like a strange, dysfunctional child that has spawned from my inner-most thoughts and feelings, the rawest of emotions, sprinkled with a dash of "creative", personal expression; a child that I've come to help develop, but, at the same time have regretfully neglected :P. In all seriousness, I'm sorry for my Tumblr hiatus. I, especially apologize to those whom have frequented my page (past and present) for whatever reason, and have continued to do so, only to find that I haven't made a post for months/years/lifetimes. I know that I've said all of this at least once before, but, I wanted to say it again. Life is ridiculously hectic...I'm not going to lie (as anybody whom knows me in the slightest and/or whom has read anything on my little blog here, can surmise).
In any case, with the New (Calendar) Year (2011) here and with the new Asian/Lunar Year soon to come, I do hope that positive inspiration, motivation, love, and happiness will finally find its way to not only me, but, to everybody out there as well (at least, everybody out there that deserves it and/or whom isn't a conceited, baby-eating, homicidal, racist, douchebag prick). With a new year, I have huge plans, hopes, and goals in mind. I just hope that they all aren't cut short, and that I can successfully bring them all to fruition. On that note, I also hope that I can share that (the journey - the success, failures, and everything in between) with all of you, eventually...in some shape or form.
One of my goals for this year is to post more (and more regularly) on Tumblr. I particularly would like to wrap up the unfinished "chapters" that I have started - ones that have just been sitting around collecting dust as placeholders for my thoughts; specific topics that I always wanted to talk about, but, never got the chance to get around in doing so. On that note, as a little cliff hanger, I want(ed) to touch upon certain subjects (some more controversial than others): suicide, family, friendship, the concept of "home", and even (dare I say) love. Maybe, my "friends" at I love you sorta, can chime in and help me with that :P.
I now would like to extend a sincere, heartfelt, thank you to: friends, family (although, I really don't intend nor would like you to ever read any of this, for obvious reasons, and as dysfunctional and insane as you may be, and for how much anguish, anger, sorrow, and pain that you have caused me, and how you essentially have fucked me up real well, time and time again - I suppose I still must acknowledge you, as I [as crazy as it may sound] am grateful to you, and must thank you to at least some extent. Plus, I wouldn't have much to write or talk about without you :P.), Tumblr "followers", and anybody whom has taken the time to read anything that I've posted. Thank you, all.
Until next post, check out the link below and take care, everybody. As always, feel free to ask me a question and/or send me an e-mail, even if it's just to say hi, anytime.
-Moi
One of the new "projects" that I've been "working on". In essence, the channel was created mostly just for entertainment value, personal shits and giggles, and as a shout-out to some of my friends. If you happen to have a YouTube account, feel free to leave me a comment, message, and/or subscribe to my channel :P.
P.S. - If you happen to have a Facebook account, I also have a "secret" fan page on FB. To find it, simply do a search for: "Richard Hua (a.k.a. The Asian Sensation)"; yet, another one of my side "projects". Feel free to "like" that. I swear that I'm not an arrogant asshole nor is this shameless self-promotion :P. All will be revealed in due time.
Chapter 14 - Paying Homage to Select, Talented Asians and Asian-Americans
...
The official music video for the song, "Getting By", by Tim Be Told (Track 3; the title track of their 2007 album). Putting my personal bias aside (i.e. of me being a huge fan of Tim Be Told), I also like this video because it revolves around interracial relationships and dating; a somewhat rare, social phenomena that we need to see more of. It kinda reminds me of this video.
Tim and Andrew from Tim Be Told perform an acoustic version of their song, "Stupid" (Track 9 of their 2007 "Getting By" album).

The official music video for "Message From Your Heart" by Kina Grannis (one of my personal favorites of Kina's; track 11 off of her 2010 album, "Stairwells"). Talking about love, hearts, and messages, I also very much dig her song (and music video), "Valentine" (track 3 off of her 2010 album, "Stairwells").
The [very lovely] Kina Grannis does an acoustic cover of Michael Jackson's "Remember the Time". "Do you remember the time when we fell in love?" Yeah, I actually do, Kina. I think it was when I first saw/heard you in this video :P.
