I wanted to do something a little different. How many of you have heard of a condition called Neurofibromatosis? I’m willing to bet that the majority of you haven’t. That’s okay, that’s why I decided to open up and talk about it and how it affects me. Neurofibromatosis causes non cancerous tumors to grow on nerve endings of the body. These can lead to various complications, and affects people in varying degrees. It can cause speech impediments, bone abnormalities, learning disabilities, physical delays and in very rare cases the tumors can become malignant. I personally have a very mild case, but I know a few people that have a much more severe case than me. To put it into perspective, I’d rate my case 2-3, and my friends’ cases a 6-7. For instance, I personally have about 6 tumors, each about the size of a pea, but don’t worry as none of them have ever caused me any issues in the 25 years of my life. Neurofibromatosis is more common than cystic fibrosis, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and Huntington’s disease combined, but it is far less known than any of them. One reason for this is Neurofibromatosis is such a misunderstood condition; which is probably partly from people who have it not wanting to talk about it, which I can understand of course but I want to help change that.
