I don't like the idea of calling these type of people 'parents'. Because they clearly aren't grasping the concept of what the word 'parent' stands for, the deeper meaning behind the word.
It doesn't matter what kind of parent you are, biological/birth parent, step-parent, legal guardian or adoptive parent... you all have the same responsibility, you should all have the same goals. And excluding your child from your family because of their sexuality is NOT a reason to send them away or to guilt-trip them. It is a shame that so many children these days are scared of telling their 'parents' who they truly are. It's a shame that people still need to come out to begin with.
If you consider yourself a parent, then behave like one. If you can't do this, because 'the neighbors are talking about us'/'what will our friends & the church say'... then you do not deserve that child. The only thing you can call yourself then, is a bigoted asshole.
During her kindergarten years, at age 3, my daughter once said: "Ewww. I'm never getting married!" To which I replied: "You just wait and see when that one special girl or boy crosses your path. We'll talk about it again then."
Today she is a couple weeks short of her 11th birthday and I still refer to her future partner as him or her.
Just last week we had a conversation about a video she watched on YouTube; a video of a boy coming out to his parents. I told her, "girl, if you ever dare feeling like you 'have to' come out to me, I'll be whooping some butt. All I wanna hear is 'mom, here's my girlfriend/boyfriend... See ya."
Of course I'd never whoop her butt. I only needed to get my point across to her. And I did. She had a good laugh. I can't fathom the idea of never encouraging her to go after what she might like. Is she going to be gay? I don't know. And neither does she yet. But I always want her to know that people are born the way they feel towards a certain gender (or both) and that there is absolutely nothing wrong with loving the same, the other or both genders. It's as normal as can be.
"Hey mom, they should turn that the other way, you know, like straight people having to come out. Then they'd understand how stupid it is." My daughter added in an afterthought and I rehearsed to her my speech of me coming out to my parents as straight. She laughed so hard she almost peed her pants. In the car.
Okay, this has been too long. But people need to understand that parenting is more than just giving a kid some food and a roof over their head. Parenting means to love and respect your child. Parenting means to encourage your child in all the ways they need it the most. Parenting means to support your child, in good times and especially in bad times. Parenting means to love your child unconditionally.
I know my child will never have to worry about finding her truth and be open about it. And she knows how to support her friends if they ever end up in such a situation.
Sorry for the long post. No, I'm not sorry. This needed to be said. Kids need to know that there are people in this world who don't judge them and who will support them. ❤️💙💚💛🧡💜
