Everyone wants to out-do one another with the hockey yaoi show, it's very layered and happens with every new popular thing. There's the layer of people who genuinely enjoy it. There's the layer of people who ironically enjoy it. There's the layer of people who genuinely hate it and the layer of people who ironically hate it. There's the layer of people who want to comment on it by saying they didn't watch it, deliberatelly positioning themselves as different but still desiring to be part of the conversation. There's the layer of people who want to be counter culture and say things like "but why don't you watch [media that the person considers edgier] instead". There's the layer of people who are annoyed at the layer of people who say "but why don't you watch [media that the person considers edgier] instead" and start to condescendingly defend in an attempt to be counter-counter culture. There's the layer of people who want to to be counter-counter-counter culture by post-ironically liking it, like they're wearing a costume of people who genuinely like it. This keeps going on forever until the next popular thing.
