Don't you know I'm no good for you?
Steve was a JD, never lost a fight, and was one of the toughest greasers. Soda was kind, beautiful, and cared for everyone.
I've learned to lose you, can't afford to
Steve lost for the first time at the age of 4, when he woke to his mother screaming hateful words and staring at him with hatred while opening the front door with the hand that wasn’t holding a packed suitcase, and it hasn’t stopped since. Soda lost for the first time at the age of 16, when Darry opened the door to police officers informing them of their parents death, and he would be dead long before he let his brothers get lost.
Tore my shirt to stop you bleedin'
Steve ignored the screaming of his ribs and the angry burning of his cuts and bruises so he could bandage Soda up, anything to alleviate some of Soda’s pain.
But nothin' ever stops you leavin'
Steve knows he shouldn’t care, that he’s acting like a lovesick broad, even when he tried so hard to prove since he was 3 that he wasn’t no girl, but he can’t help but notice how Soda’s eyes always look for Sandy in a crowded room while Steve looks for him.
Quiet when I'm comin' home and I'm on my own
Steve knows the Curtis house as if it’s his own. He knows just where to step without making the floor boards creek while walking in at the dead of night after his dad had gotten to the bottom of one too many beer bottles and decided hogs son was to blame for his misery.
I could lie, say I like it like that, like it like that
I could lie, say I like it like that, like it like that
Steve can feel that familiar weight that restricted his lungs and crushed his heart when he told Soda that he would be fine by himself while he went to go find Sandy.
Don't you know too much already?
Steve could feel Soda’s concerned face staring at him while he cleaned the glass out of a wound he had gotten the day before (even though they both knew he hadn’t been anywhere but his own house).
I'll only hurt you if you let me
Steve was violent in the same way as a hurt dog. Angry and wary of the people surrounding him, even when some just want to help..
Call me friend but keep me closer (call me back)
Steve wasn’t dumb, he knew that friends didn’t act the way they did with each other. Not even best friends but Soda didn’t seem to notice, so he could learnt to not notice either.
And I'll call you when the party's over
Soda’s house number is engrained in his mind as he dials while drunk at a party.
Quiet when I'm comin' home and I'm on my own
Steve walks into his house after being dropped off from the party by Soda, as quiet as he can while Soda waits in the car, making sure he gets in safely.
And I could lie, say I like it like that, like it like that
Yeah, I could lie, say I like it like that, like it like that
Steve knows he needs to stop, to get over it, but he’s starting to get comfortable with the feeling. After all, he’s used to being second best.
But nothin' is better sometimes
Once we've both said our goodbyes
Steve can’t help but smile as sleep over takes his body after a long day of enjoying Soda’s company, despite the sick felling in his stomach telling him to move on.
Let's just let it go
Let me let you go
Steve sees Evie, wonderful, beautiful, caring Evie, and thinks that he can move on.
Quiet when I'm comin' home and I'm on my own
Steve walked through his front door as quiet as he can. But it’s not enough. It’s never enough. The door slams behind him. He braces himself as he hears the telltale sign of thumping as his father clambers down stairs.
I could lie, say I like it like that, like it like that
I could lie, say I like it like that, like it like that
