Ever wish that Staples® “Easy Button” was real? I do… Today, I spent the day NOT doing what I’d hoped to do (writing new releases for a couple clients). Instead, I had to do some emergency website maintenance and testing. Testing that ended up taking… all… day… It seemed that a plugin in one of our client WordPress environments was causing admin page load issues, locking administrators out. While I was able identify the issue quickly, finding the solution was a little more involved. After some deep code diving (not my strong suit) and some time in support queues (not so efficient), I discovered a conflict with the plugin PHP calls and our recent server updates to PHP8.0. Basically the plugin was incompatible with PHP8.0 ... the engine that runs our hosting servers... 0_o Lovely… While this plugin is easy enough to replace, offering access to our admins and mitigating any additional site 500 errors, this plugin is on 29 of the sites I host… Yeah… all... day... After some serious dev time and a LOT of SFTP and Password wrangling, I had all sites updated with the compatible plugin(s). Then, I looked up at the clock and realized I’d worked through lunch, coffee breaks, most bathroom breaks and … well, it was time to go start dinner. The whole point of this post: Just a reminder to myself and those like me that being an entrepreneur is not easy. When you’re starting out (even after), you have to wear many, MANY hats. Today, I had to take off the creative hat for the analytical/troubleshooting hat. Most days, my Staples® "Easy Button" sits on my desk as a tongue-in-cheek reference to lighter loads and easier days… Today, it reminded me THIS is why they call it “work.” It’s not easy, but it sure is rewarding.
