in a world where magic is less widespread there is a single detective agency dedicated to solving magical mysteries, the Night Raven Detective Agency.
Ace, Deuce, & Yuu First Meeting
ace and deuce are partners at a detective agency tasked with investigating the suspicious actions of a random cult on the outskirts of sage island. ace and deuce are still rookie detectives and are usually sent on what ace describes as "here damn." assignments that no one else wants to do.
so even though they're explicitly told by their superviser riddle to not engage with the cultists and just gather info off the streets they obviously don't do that. instead ace convinces deuce that its a lot more impressive to everyone to disobey direct orders and do an undercover job.
when they sneak in mostly successfully they find the cult about to perform a demon summoning ceremony.
the cultists chant and dance around a mirror and just when ace begins complaining to deuce about how much of a waste of time this is a person is dragged out of the mirror
Deuce wasn't sure he and Ace should be going undercover, especially after Riddle explicitly told them not to do anything reckless, but everything had been going smoothly. Ace managed to find them some cult clothes and smooth talk his way- or maybe the better word is lie- yes lie his way into getting the two of them permission to attend the cult's demon summoning ceremony.
So far its just been a lot of speeches about demons and a greater world or something. Deuce tried to pay attention but after a while his brain just wouldn't grasp it no matter how hard he focused. Sometimes he wonders what Riddle saw in him when he recruited him to be a detective.
"This is such a waste of time, there's no shot they're gonna summon a demon" Ace mumbled under his breath next to him, "we should just slip out of here and burn these ugly robes-"
Just as Deuce turned to tell Ace to shut up hollers and chants erupted in the crowd. In the center of the room there was a hand reaching out of the mirror. The hand became an arm that became a shoulder until finally a full person shaped thing fell out of the mirror.
"Is that the demon?" the words thoughtlessly fall from Deuce's mouth. Demons did exist but to summon one was the same as summoning the destruction of the world.
"No, don't be an idiot. of course not that can't be a demon.." Ace refutes but from the look on his face even he isn't sure of his words.
the person stumbles to their feet and the cultist cheer for the demon (?) but when the person looks up their eyes are filled with unmistakable fear. fear that a demon would definitely not have.
it doesn't seem the cultists have realized that what they summoned was definitely not a demon and just a regular person. ace and deuce shared a look and a couple of wordless confused and frustrated gestures before Deuce gives up and just start whispering
Deuce doesn't know much about demons but he's certain that no demon would be scared of a group of humans. The human in the center of the room body shook as they forced themselves to stand. The summoner begins presumably explaining something about how the demon's role is to take over the world and some other nonsense. As a detective Deuce knows he's supposed to pay attention to those details about the bad guys' grand plan but all he can stare at is the frightened face of the person whose been kidnapped. Deuce makes his decision and turns to Ace.
"We have to save that person". There's no room for argument they will save the person how could they leave someone who was just kidnapped and maybe about to be trafficked behind. Deuce moves forward to rush in but a sudden tug keeps him back.
"What!? No! Are you stupid? We're here to gather information first. Plus Riddle is without a doubt going to have our heads if he finds out we revealed ourselves" Ace's hand is gripping Deuce's arm tightly as if the second he lets up Deuce will go charging in. Well.. he might but that is still no reason to hold on so tight.
"What are you chicken? Scared of some cultists? You can wait by the blastcycle like a good chicken" Deuce flaps his arms and lets out a couple 'boks' for good measure.
"I'm not a damn chicken and its hella childish for you to act like one", Ace levels him with a blank stare before he just sighs, "Ugh! This is gonna be such a pain in the ass. You grab the person I'll distract them"
deuce rushes into the center, picks up the stranger, and throws them over his shoulder just in time to turn and see ace creating chaos. ace uses wind magic to knock down some of the lanterns and they explode on the ground lighting the freaky culty rugs on the floor on fire. there are a couple of close calls but somehow they make it outside. deuce thinks 'something heavy to block the door..' and summons a cauldren.
the trio find the blastcycle ace and deuce stashed in an alley and deuce and the new person take the blastcycle while ace flies on a broom back to their shared apartment.
at the apartment its awkward for a bit before ace just looks at the stranger and asks
Ace: "so whats your name?"
Stranger: "i'm Yuu"
Ace: "huh thats a weird name"
Deuce: "dude don't be rude... uhh 'Yuu' its just that name sounds sorta.."
Ace: "like you just pulled it out of your ass"
Yuu: "oh thats probably because i'm from another world"
before this can even get addressed ace's phone rings and the name riddle appears.
so i guess the detectives now have to figure what's the deal with the cultists, how do you return someone to another world, and how to hide their shenanigans from riddle [spoiler: they won't be successful at this one]
