Autumn Seeps In
Cool damp air has seeped in. The breeze sometimes feels crisp and smells of autumn. The nights are surprisingly chilly. On the 24th & 25th we had a threat of frost with the temperature dropping to 33° on both nights. We thank our lucky stars that we didn't get a killing frost. Our garden isn't ready. I'm not ready. So many green tomatoes. We had so much hope for this year's garden, but it has been a bit of a let-down. We made some mistakes and a cold, wet spring didn't help anything. I'm crossing my fingers that we'll get a long warm spell, a prolonged summer. The appearance of the leaves on the trees aren't giving me much hope though. They're losing their luster, almost like they're rusting. Some have begun their transformation to bronze, yellow, orange, red.
I think that Josh and the dogs are excited for the cooler weather. Yesterday he hooked up the dogs for their first scooter run of the season. This morning they went running again. It's the beginning of the end of summer.
Vistonic getting caught chowing down on raspberries.
Out The Front Door, Down A Short Wooded Path
I love that we can walk out the front door, down a short wooded path, and hop into a canoe whenever we feel like going for a short paddle around the pond.
The pond is currently at the lowest level I think I've ever seen. There was such a contrast between today and the beginning of spring. Today it seemed so much smaller and quieter. I commented to Josh that it was like all of the summer tourists had left - just like in town. In the spring the pond seems large and deep, full of life. Ducks, songbirds, amphibians, all sorts of insects. Today it was so shallow and calm, preparing for it's winter's rest I suppose.
I also love that if I feel like making a pie we can walk out the front door, down a short wooded path, and pick as many raspberries as we'd like.
Lesson learned again about bringing Vistonic berry picking. He was a crazy little raspberry-chowing bulldozer.
Life-Changing Technology
In the early 1900′s household refrigerators were invented. Flash forward one hundred years and we finally have refrigeration at Bugwayji!!!
Josh purchased and hooked up two “portable” freezers to a solar panel - so we now have solar-powered refrigeration!!!!!!! This. is. big. No more coolers! No more hauling ice! No more freezing water bottles at work to bring home to keep the coolers cold, no more buying ice (it gets pretty darn expensive in the summer) no more worrying about bears breaking into the cooler, no more walking to the back of the house outside to dig around in a wet, gross cooler while getting bitten by flies and mosquitoes for whatever food we need at the moment! It’s so nice to be cooking, turn around, and just pull out whatever ingredient I happen to need from the fridge right. in. the. kitchen! Oooohhhh yeaahhhh!

This year’s garlic harvest - 37 bulbs.
Neighbor Ladies & Monstrous Raspberries
Yesterday Nikki, Kristie, and I (the three ladies of our tiny new neighborhood) finally got together to go foraging! Getting together has to be planned out ahead since Nikki & Kristie don’t get cell service out here, Kristie doesn’t have text at all on her phone, my texting only service is poor, and communicating through FB Messenger can be hit or miss because I don’t have internet access unless if I’m in town connected to a WiFi signal… Nikki & Kristie came over to my place since we have a trail right to a enormous raspberry patch. Picking was pretty normal & easygoing until we started to literally stumble upon a brush pile. And my goodness, I’ve never seen wild raspberries this big before!
(Kristie w/a pinkie-sized berry. She later found a thumb-sized one!)
The burned brush pile that we were climbing, tripping, & falling on must’ve given the raspberries an extra nutrient boost because they were thimbleberry-sized (or larger!) mutants! I wish I had audio recorded from our pick. It was full of laughter, us falling over, almost spilling our buckets of berries, and just being so darn excited and amazed at the berries in front of us. We could’ve fallen, gotten hurt, and not care that much about being hurt because we were in berry heaven.
It was a hot sweaty day too, but we just couldn’t leave the berries until our buckets were full.
(Each of us picked about one gallon of delicious berries!)
That night we got most of our little neighborhood together to sit around a fire. We listed the things that we’re thankful for and what we love about where we live.
Today I ended up making ten jars of jam out of my berries. I love cracking open a jar of sweet summer-harvested berries in the dead of winter. A little taste and memory of summer sunshine.
By some miracle the heat wave broke and today was in the 70's! It was so refreshing to open the door, walk outside, and not feel like I was walking into an oven! The perfect day to spend outside picking blueberries. Josh wasn't home to go with me, so I brought Vistonic along for company and to alert me of any bears. It's amazing how quickly the landscape can change & how fast plants grow up in just one year. I didn't find our secret patch right away. When I did I wasn't even sure that I was heading in the right direction at first. It seemed like an entirely new place. That's the thing about blueberry picking - your favorite blueberry patches don't stay the same. The forest grows up around them until they're shaded out and are no longer a good spot to pick. Vistonic & I got out of the car & spotted plenty of blue right away. I sprayed us down with insect repellent and got down to the business of picking. It didn't take long for Vistonic to catch on and start picking and eating berries himself. The advantage to taking him along for company is that he can't tell anyone the location of our berry patch. The downside is that he likes to eat berries just as much as we do. Little booger. He spent his time eating berries, exploring a little, taking shade & bug breaks at the car, & checking on me.
A few plants were loaded with huge, plump berries, but most were only about half ripe. Further down the patch in the more shady spot there were hardly any ripe berries at all. I was out there for about two hours and ended up picking a little more than two pounds at a very leisurely pace while taking photos & playing with Vistonic. Not bad. I don't think that we're going to harvest as many berries from this spot as last year, but it'll be worth a couple more visits in the next couple of weeks.
When it's so hot outside that the only thing you can stand doing is floating around in a lake all day for two days in a row.
"It's hot out! Are you available to go to the falls?" Monica had told me to text her if it got hot out and I was around to go swimming with her and Edith. I haven't spent much time with kids and I don't feel like I know what to do or expect around them. When I think toddlers I think of little beings that are always screaming, crying, pooping, and are sticky and snotty all of the time. The exact opposite of someone that's pleasant to be around. I thought about the times I've been to public swimming pools and watching parents trying to coax their young into the water while the child is crying or screaming the entire time. So I was a little nervous about how Edith would be at the falls. I'm not saying that's how I think Edith is though. I've only seen her cry once - at her one year birthday party when she was overly tired and had a mini meltdown at the table. I'm always teasing Monica that Edith is the "perfect" child with how quiet, patient, and sweet she is. On the walk to the falls Edith insisted that she walk between Monica and I holding both of our hands. The trail gets too narrow in spots so I had to walk behind them while still holding Edith's hand in front of me (What? a kid that likes me & wants to hold my hand? totally weird, right?). Once we were at the falls I got into the water first. Monica sat on the edge of the pool for a bit with Edith on her lap. Edith dipped her hands into the water and smiled at the water swirling around them as she moved them back and forth. Soon Monica and Edith were in the water and Edith was splashing and laughing. She soon learned how fun it was to "splash fight" with me. There were bubbles drifting by on the surface of the pool which she caught and tried to eat. While sitting on the falls she quietly marveled at the water flowing over the rocks. No crying, all smiles. After about an hour of waterfall fun she said "all done" and we got out of the water. Edith fell asleep to Monica nursing her while we were sitting on the warm rocks to dry off. Even when Monica woke Edith up to walk back Edith didn't make a peep. On the way back Edith was saying "snacks? snacks?" So we made a quick stop to look around for some raspberries & blueberries, which we found a few handfuls of to share. In the car on the way home we ran out of berries to share with her. In the back seat she was saying "Bellies?.. bellies?...bellies?....." in the cutest, most pitiful little voice. I've never heard someone sound so sad over running out of berries to eat. And still, even after running out of berries and snacks - no crying. I was amazed.

I’m used to it. Dog hair on my clothes, on the furniture, mixed in with my own hair….everywhere. But enough is enough. I’ve never had dogs that shed like this before. Oh the life of an Alaskan Husky owner. I had just sat down to read a book on the dog hair-covered couch when I noticed a ping pong ball sized piece of fur fall off of Typhoon. Time for a brushing I guess. Both Typhoon and Vistonic are currently “blowing their coats”. A biannual event that I didn’t know about until we got huskies. Typhoon, the fluffier of the two was the main contributor to this pile of fur.
I ended up donating the fluff to our birds and whatever other critters may be interested in this fine nesting material by stuffing it into a suet feeder outside.
Chaga harvest and our last ski of the year.
Josh & I finally explored a local ski trail that I’ve been wondering about. It ended up being a short out & back trail, but oh so pretty!
Lake Superior is at it's most beautiful during the winter. This is just the beginning of lakeside ice sculptures, amazing sunrises & sunsets, and all types of ice on the big lake. *crosses fingers*
Baby, it's cold outside. That wind coming off of the lake is brutal. Like freeze your snot onto your face and blur your vision with your own tears in one minute flat brutal. But look how pretty! I LOVE sea smoke! Plus, ice is finally forming in the harbor!

The Arctic air has arrived. According to the thermometer on the house: the temperature dropped to -16.2°F last night & it was -11°F this morning at 9am. It’s feeling like January already.
Yesterday we got 10″ of fresh snow! Josh and I opted to go skiing today to celebrate :)
