I am America. I am the part you won't recognize. But get used to me. Black, confident, cocky; my name, not yours; my religion, not yours; my goals, my own; get used to me.

Julian Bondās career as an activist, politician, professor of history made him an elder statesmen in the Civil Rights Movement.
Confession: I did not know very much about Julian Bond. Yes, Iād seen photographs of him and known that he was one of the last standing symbols of the Civil Rights Movement.Ā
But I did not know anything about his work as a social activist- he co-founded the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee with Ella BakerĀ or that he established the Southern Poverty Law Center.Ā
I also did not know that heād been able to marry his social activism with being an elected official and served for 20 years in office.Ā
Phenomenal man. Ā

Through A Lens Darkly: Black Photographers And The Emergence Of A Peopleā¦
āA film that explores how African American communities have used the camera as a tool for social change from the invention of photography to the present. This epic tale poetically moves between the present and the past, through contemporary photographers and artists whose images and stories seek to reconcile legacies of pride and shame while giving voice to images long suppressed, forgotten, and hidden from sightā¦ā
Inspired by Deborah Willisās book, Reflections in Black, filmmaker Thomas Allen Harris casts a broad net with Through a Lens Darkly: Black Photographers and the Emergence of a People and begins with his family album. The film is a cornucopia of Americana that reveals deeply disturbing truths about the history of race relations while expressing joyous, life-affirming sentiments about the ability of artists and amateurs alike to assert their identity through the photographic lensā¦
ā¦Through a Lens Darkly" demonstrates, itās only through the eyes of black photographers that we see differently. With the thousand words vividly painted through each picture, we connect, identify and find solidarity⦠Some of the black photographersā works here are breathtaking ā and may prompt you to hunt down Willisā book for the coffee table. But thereās so much more to take away from Harrisā documentary. It unequivocally confirms the necessity of diversity in media, the business of image making. With some of the most successful television shows this fall boasting people of color in front of and behind the camera, a centuries-old paradigm has only just begun to shift..
