eating in mexico as a Brit or central/northern European has gotta be like hearing music for the first time
loose continuation of this
I know this really needs an ID, for EVERYONE, I went full chicken scratch here. I'll get to it soon.
anyway. inspired by the very canon facts that A) the Rough Rhinos killed Jet's family and B) the Rough Rhinos are still at large in the Earth Kingdom as mercenaries post-canon in the comics. I smell the potential for an incredibly tense reconciliatory field tripppppp >:)
Having a thought I'm not sure how to express
Sgrub alpha - > Trying to persist long after a story has ended
Sgrub beta - > Trying to worm into a sequel
Sburb beta - > Trying to outlive a tragedy
Sburb alpha - > Trying to escape the aftermath of a tragedy
also @jadedharleys fuck i love the flowering intricacies of these metafictional interpretations and with the idea that it's all strung together into a loop... like the cherubs as caliborn and calliope being the shaping forces of a narrative entrenched through the path of all four
oh its so fun to think abt fr like. i need to work on my retcon essay more but theres so much to be said about how every iteration of it is another struggle to escape the intended story? twisting a tragedy into something else (sburb beta) or trying to have importance in a story that never meant to give you a purpose other than being the forbearers for the actual heroes (sgrub alpha), and then doing almost everything right but having a happy ending stolen (sgrub beta) or having no purpose but waiting for someone to step in (sburb alpha) . and both the clear thematic struggles against those narratives and the times when there's no choice but to take that given path really really set up how in the end they actually manage to rewrite that overarching tragic narrative into a happy ending.

Seeing this set off a genuine fight-or-flight response
After my experiment with Coca-Cola waffles and this video about mountain dew fried rice I think it would probably have less of an impact than you'd expect. Any unique flavor of the soft drink just gets condensed down into "vaguely sweet" and get overpowered by the other flavors brought in by the other ingredients...
... That being said 32 ounces is a lot
It's the lack of instructions that really gets me. Like, I know it's a joke recipe and not intended to actually be cooked, but... the directions are just bake and then stir. Are you supposed to saute the onions and celery? Melt the butter? Cook the pasta? Do you just dump raw noodles and gatorade into a casserole dish along with everything else and hope that somehow it'll magically turn into something edible in the oven? Why do you stir it after baking but not before? I have so, so many questions.
(I think probably I would cook the noodles in more gatorade first to give them that nice radioactive yellow color and classic sporting event flavor. That feels like the correct and also worst way to do it.)

You know what I'm about to ask right?
should @crowscriven partake once again in the making of an affront to god?
well obviously
is there an other answer?
I'm not fun and I say no
Happy 10th birthday to the best tweet of all time.
Iβm watching that documentary βBefore Stonewallβ about gay history pre-1969, and uncovered something which I think is interesting.
The documentary includes a brief clip of a 1954 televised newscast about the rise of homosexuality. The host of the program interviewed psychologists, a police officer, and one βknown homosexualβ. The βknown homosexualβ is 22 years old. He identifies himself as Curtis White, which is a pseudonym; his name is actually Dale Olson.
So I tracked down the newscast. According to what I can find, Dale Olson may have been the first gay man to appear openly on television and defend his sexual orientation. He explains that thereβs nothing wrong with him mentally and heβs never been arrested. When asked whether heβd take a cure if it existed, he says no. When asked whether his family knows heβs gay, he says that they didnβt up until tonight, but he guesses theyβre going to find out, and heβll probably be fired from his job as well. So of course the host is like β¦why are you doing this interview then? and Dale Olson, cool as cucumber pie, says βI think that this way I can be a little useful to someone besides myself.β
1954. 22 years old. Balls of pure titanium.
Despite the pseudonym, Daleβs boss did indeed recognize him from the TV program, and he was promptly fired the next day. He wrote into ONE magazine six months later to reassure readers that he had gotten a new job at a higher salary.
Curious about what became of him, I looked into his life a little further. It turns out that he ultimately became a very successful publicity agent. He promoted the Rocky movies and Superman. Not only that, but get this: Dale represented Rock Hudson, and he was the person who convinced him to disclose that he had AIDS! He wrote the statement Rock read. And as we know, Rock Hudsonβs disclosure had a very significant effect on the national conversation about AIDS in the U.S.
It appears that no one has made the connection between Dale Olson the publicity agent instrumental in the AIDS debate and Dale Olson the 22-year-old first openly gay man on TV. So I thought Iβd make it. For Pride month, an unsung gay hero.
RATING: RELIABLE
you can listen to the clip of the 1954 interview hereΒ and find him on wikipedia here
this is all i have. I cant even share the rest of it bc it gets gross
βUnfinished Paintingβ β Keith Haring
This painting was left intentionally incomplete. Haring began it when he was dying due to complications from AIDS, and knew he didnβt have much time left. The piece represents the incomplete lives of him and many others, lost to AIDS during the crisis.
βAIDS Memorial Quiltβ β Multiple
This quilt is over 50 tons heavy, and one of, if not the, largest pieces of community folk art. Many people who died of AIDS did not receive funerals, due to social stigma and many funeral homes refusing to handle the deceasedβs remains, so this was one of the only ways their lives could be celebrated. Each panel was created in recognition of someone who died due to AIDS, typically by that personβs loved ones.
βUntitledβ (Portrait of Ross in L.A.) β Felix Gonzalez-Torres
This pile of candy weighs the same amount as an average adult man. Visitors are encouraged to take some of the candy. As they do so, the pile of candy weighs less and less. This is a commentary on how AIDS deteriorates the body of those who have it. Gonzalez-Torresβ partner, Ross Laycock, had died due to AIDS-related complications the same year.
The SF Gay Men's Chorus
This photo was taken in 1993. The men in white are the surviving original members. Every man in black is standing in for an original member who lost their lives to AIDS.
βElectric Fan (Feel it Motherfuckers); Only Unclaimed Item from the Stephen Earabino Estate, 1997β β John Boskovich
After the death of his lover, Stephen Earabino, from AIDS, Boskovich discovered that his family had completely cleared his room, including Boskovichβs own possessions, save for this fan. An entire person, existence and relationship had been erased, just like so many lives during the AIDS crisis. Boskovich encased the fan in Plexiglass, but added cutouts so that its air may be felt by the viewer, almost like an exhalation. In a sense, restoring Earabinoβs breath.
βBlueβ β Derek Jarman
This was Jarmanβs final feature film, released four months before his death from AIDS-related complications. These complications had left him visually impaired, able to only see in shades of blue. This film consists of a single shot of a saturated blue color, as the soundtrack to the film described Jarmanβs life through narration, intercut with the adventures of Blue, a humanization of the color blue. The film's final moments consist of a set of repeated names: βJohn. Daniel. Howard. Graham. Terry. Paul". These are the names of former lovers and friends of Jarman who had died due to AIDS.
βUntitledβ (Perfect Lovers) β Felix Gonzalez-Torres
Created by the same man who created the previous untitled piece, this piece was also inspired by his loverβs deterioration and death due to AIDS. This piece consists of two perfectly alike clocks. Over the course of time, one of the clocks will fall out of sync with the other.
In a letter written to his lover about the piece, before his loverβs passing, Gonzalez-Tourres wrote, βDon't be afraid of the clocks, they are our time, the time has been so generous to us. We imprinted time with the sweet taste of victory. We conquered fate by meeting at a certain time in a certain space. We are a product of the time, therefore we give back credit were it is due: time. We are synchronized, now forever. I love you.β

There are four categories of people you will meet: Underlings, superiors, rivals, and love interests. One of my underlings has been attempting to convince me of the existence of a fifth category, "friend", which appears to have no purpose. I suspect it is a ploy to get out of performing her duties.
If you have enough passion in your heart, superiors, rivals, and even some underlings can also be love interests.

In case anyone finds it helpful because mobility aids are horrifically expensive and inaccessibleβ¦
And for those people who have access to mobility devices but might benefit from a second chair they can abuse without risking expensive damageβ¦
Erik Kondo has made a website, Open Source Innovations, that details plans for DIY wheelchairs. These wheelchairs can be made from common materials like wood, plastic, and pvc. They are lightweight and can be custom fit to the user allowing from the same degree of movement you would get from a custom chair. And they are durable and easily repairable. (he has been stress testing his latest design by dropping it down stairs, dropping it out of a car, launching it across a driveway, and throwing it off a deck). Its 12lbs and I think he said its was in the $200 ish range for parts.
He also is working on cheap, open source, accessible designs for beach chairs, off road chairs, motorized attachments (think smart drive), and so on. Plus he skateboards in his wheelchair. Cool dude, helpful info, pass it on.
It's incredibly sad people have to resort to this, but it's a damn good resource. Use it. Spread awareness. Maybe one day people with physical disabilities won't need DIYs like this. But until then, reblog and share.
This is Accessibility!
That's so amazing! It is unfortunate that so many people will need this, but very very cool that it exists
That other link seems to be broken.
On Discomfort and Morality
My father finds gay men uncomfortable.
He's told me before that it's like a knee-jerk for him. Something he doesn't consciously control. He sees two men behaving romantically, and his body reacts with mild discomfort.
In the 1960s, when he was in high school, most of the boys in his form thought he was gay on the simple fact that he wasn't homophobic. He wouldn't participate in insulting queer people, he didn't care if someone was gay, he wouldn't have a problem hanging out with gay people. So people thought he was gay. That's how prevalent homophobia was in his formative years.
When I was 10, my dad told me very seriously that Holmes and Watson were gay. That it was obvious from the literature and the time period that they were meant to be a gay couple. When I was 14 and I came out to my parents as bi, when my mum was upset my dad ripped into her for it. Told her that she was being stupid, that it was my life to live how I wanted to and that she needed to get over herself.
My dad formed my views on censorship: that being that it was completely ridiculous and thoroughly evil. He didn't believe in censorship of any kind. If I asked him a question about sex, he answered it honestly. When I was 12 and I asked him about homosexuality, still young and uncertain, he told me that there was nothing wrong with it. That it was just how some people were. That there was likely an evolutionary reason for it. And that for some people it was uncomfortable on an instinctual level.
He taught me that just because you're uncomfortable with something, doesn't make it wrong. He also taught me that most people don't understand this.
I see a lot of this on the internet as of the last few years. The anti shipping movement, the terf movement, the anti ace movement. It all stems from discomfort that people have crossed wires into believing means wrong. Really every -ism and -phobia out there stems from this same fundamental aspect of humanity.
The next time you see something and you automatically think it's disgusting, or wrong, or immoral, I invite you to ask yourself: is this actually wrong or does this just make me uncomfortable?
