Schizostylus coccinea have cup shaped red or pink flowers that open wide and keep their flowers and tall green leaves into the flowers and tall green leaves into the depths of November.

A few flowers may even linger until Christmas. Once established each stem will produce between six and twelve flowers or more. 

They can be seen in the Ornamental Garden here in The Alnwick Garden.

Plant of Interest: White Wood Astor 

Masses of white, daisy like flowers are produced from June to October. The flowers of Aster Divaricatus fade to subtle burgundy and rose-pink.

Golly gosh you can tell the season has changed, almost as soon as the kids went back to school the wind picked up and the rains came down. A phenomenally stark difference to the largely sunny and warm summer break. 

It is nice to have the change so clear like real seasons are back again as opposed to long stretches of rain for 8 months, a week of sunshine in March and October followed by ice cold winter. 

We feel a change in the mood of The Alnwick Garden and we are full swing into our Autumn and Winter campaigns. The Big Spooky Adventure is almost begun and the ordering of thousands of pumpkins will begin in earnest. We have two versions of Hallowe'en to show to the public, each is very different in tone from the other. 

Our daytime events will include an updated Flora Xplora self guided tour, Pumpkin carving under the Hornbeam with our Budding Artists, some ghoulish imps running amok and causing havock. A dark shape standing nearly nine feet tall will stalk you around the grounds while the nervous Ghosts are zipping about (they're fresh out of spook school and are still afraid of humans). 

The Treehouse are having an adults only fright fest over three nights in the half-term and is not for the faint hearted!

Yellow Wax Bells

Kirengeshoma palmata is native to Korea and Japan. The name Kirengeshoma is formed from words in Japanese. Ki means yellow, Renge means lotus blossom and Shoma means hat.

it flowers late summer to early autumn and is suitable for a shady border or woodland garden.

"At least five species of butterfly continue to flourish on the long lasting herbaceous perennials. Most notable are the crimson/pink Coneflower (Echinacea Purpurea) for Peacocks and Painted Ladies and Joe Pye weed (Eupatorium Purpurea) for Red Admirals. Drifts of Japanese anenomes in pink and white are pleasing to the eye, especially the white Honorine Jobert. Clumps of Lythrum Salicaria offer rose red blooms in a border whilst Clematis Orientalis Bill McKenzie (yellow with black stamens) dazzles on a wall. 

The shrubby pink and white flower clusters of Clerodendron Trichotomum are rather special and there is a hint of colour change in leaves and fruit throughout the garden."
