I’ve taken a lot of life lessons to get to where I am now. I can say with confidence that I love myself for all my strengths and my flaws, because love does not need reasons or justifications. There’s beauty in that, too, that love can be given and gained for no reason. There’s harshness in that, too, that love can be withheld and withdrawn for no reason. I have no formula for how I have come to love myself, but that I have developed a relationship and an open communication with who I am and what I desire over the years. That isn’t to say, however, that I do not crave others’ love. In the teenage years I believed that if I loved the entirety of myself, I would no longer crave love from others. I also believed that loving myself meant being satisfied with every part of myself. At the moment, though, I think loving oneself is more about being loyal, kind, and forgiving to one’s soul despite the dissatisfying parts it may carry. Love is more about being happy with imperfection than feeling content with what is perfect.
