A lot of people use the 👍 emoji as a quick “okay” or “got it,” but depending on the situation it can come across as dismissive, rude or like the conversation is being shut down.

When someone takes the time to write a message, explain something, share an opinion or open up about something personal, receiving only a thumbs up in return can sometimes feel less like being acknowledged and more like a slap to the face.

It’s not that the emoji itself is bad of course but it’s about the feeling and context behind it.

Taking an extra few minutes to respond with a few words can genuinely make someone’s day. A simple “sounds good,” “thank you,” “I understand,” “I appreciate you sharing that” or even just a little more effort in a reply can make a huge difference. It shows there’s an actual person on the other side of the conversation who is listening and cares enough to engage.

Communication is more than just confirming that a message was received. People want to feel heard, valued and like they’re having a conversation with someone..not just sending messages into a void and getting reactions back.

Sometimes a tiny emoji can throw off the entire meaning/intention/etc. behind a message and while that may not be the intention, those small interactions add up. People may start sharing less, reaching out less and eventually stop trying altogether.
