people always characterize susan as a mother figure, and certainly many characters in the books see her that way (the narnians especially). but in my opinion, when it comes to the pevensies and how they see it, peter's the mother (especially in the years following the narnian war). the one whose word they can't really go against because once it's decided it's decided. "high king" means final word. susan is the more like the βfirstborn.β the one peter leaves in charge when he canβt be somewhere. the one who knows her younger siblings regard her as lesser in authority. who knows they'd feel safer if it were peter and not her around. who tries to make up for it when they want peter instead. who knows how fragile her control over them is. yet, she knows them in some ways more than peter does. peter knows them instinctually, like a parent might, but susan's been there for ed and lucy at their ugliest. she's fought with them and that fighting means there's aspects of them she gets to glimpse that peter doesn't. for that reason, when they're too embarrassed to tell peter something, it's always su they go to. su who keeps their secrets and will take the fall for them if need be. who would never turn them away from her door. because she's one of them and they know she'll advocate for them. god i love susan.

Like I always wondered why those places why spesificly them? So I wonder how you might write it and how they became named the Magnificent, Genlte, Just and Valiant from those places.

Hi! Yes, actually. This was central to my outlining for the entire fic. Although, it's not so much about how they "get" their titles so much as how the titles function as pseudo-prophecies. I can't reveal much beyond that without serious spoilers!

I don't use Google docs much. I mainly use Notion and Microsoft Word. Notion is free (and if you make an account, you can have all your stuff saved on a cloud and access it using the app or website). Though most of my writing (what goes on the actual fic document) is done on Word, Notion is the best software for cataloguing all my ideas and making them easily accessible/expandable.
Here's a glimpse into what my workspace looks like:
So, some caveats, while the app is free (and that's the version I use), there are paid versions of it. Also, Notion has its own AI, which I haven't found very useful beyond it giving a few editing suggestions or functioning as an in-built search bar (honestly, if you're a competent writer, LLMs just simply aren't useful beyond functioning as fancy search engines/spellcheck/grammar systems, I promise you that your own ideas will always be more interesting and original than what an AI can suggest!). Some people stopped using Notion because of their AI feature, but it doesn't bother me because most of my writing happens on Word and/or scribbles in my notebook and Notes App on my phone (I take a lot of notes and have like hundreds of internet tabs open at a given time!). Also, it's only really usable if you have a paid subscription (you have very limited uses of the AI on free), so if that doesn't bother you, then Notion is a great workspace for organizing ideas, chapters and research that you're doing. Especially because of it's tagging system. If I want results for one specific project, I can filter out others and be left with only the docs relating to that project. It's really efficient!
I also like it because it allows you to intuitively build what you need for a specific page/document. For example, if I want to build a database for magical animals in a region, it's really easy to add lists, spreadsheets, toggle menus, etc, in order to combine the information in a way that makes sense to me.
[This is a page I made for dumping scenes I want to rework or am not sure about including. I have a very strict no deleting any writing I do policy because you can always reuse some of the stuff you "throw away" later!]
Also, you can make your Notion worskpace as cool/pretty as you want!

The reason I also like Word (other than the fact that I've been writing on Word since I was a kid) is that it allows me to create documents with font flexibility that really gives me a vibe to what I'm writing. Idk, it just really helps me get into the flow of things. I currently have the full and current Microsoft Office Suite, but if you'd like an older, just as functional version of Word, you can get Word 2007 for free here [Note: Depending on the type of computer you have, you can search for a version that is compatible with your specific OS on the Internet Archive].

ShaelinWrites (an award winning-author who's really helped me deconstruct some of what I've been taught about writing + my favourite video is one she's done on the subject of form)
This playlist by YouTuber/screenwriter HARTWELL THE WATCHER (he gives straightforward breakdowns of some important story elements like theme, pacing, etc)
Each of these writers has different approaches to how they break down story, but all of them are mainly methods you can use for yourself to see if they work. There's more I could share but I don't want to overwhelm you, especially because sometimes writing advice can be so exaggerated at times. Most of what you need to learn will come from reading things you love and writing what you want to. I cannot stress that enough.
Now, about my process!
How I write has changed over the years, but it also changes depending on what project I'm working on. So here are some tips and tricks I've used for myself!
#1. Read Before You Write
Read something good before you write (whether it's poetry or a couple of paragraphs/a chapter from a book you like or want to emulate). It's like oiling the machine that is your brain.
#2. Scribble Notes!
Preferably on paper (it's good for your brain), though using a digital app is okay, too. Just keep lots and lots of notes so that ideas don't stay clogged up in your brain. And write almost immediately the idea strikes you! Ideas can be easily lost! Give your brain a space to just vomit out ideas without any restriction.
#3. Don't Delete Anything You Write!
I'm so serious. Even if you think it's bad (at least if it's more than a paragraph's worth), just store it somewhere else for safekeeping. It could really help you down the road.
#4. Companion Reading Really Helps
Have a companion read for what you're writing. For example, when I was drafting scenes for my Stranger Things fic, I was reading Stephen King short stories (known for his contemporary horror and dry prose). I was also reading Stranger Things fics to keep me motivated and keep my head in that space. For the Narnia fic, my companion read Wars of the Roses by Conn Iggulden (and I keep diving into the Narnia books themselves now and then, on top of reading people's fics). Conn's book is good because it grounds me in medieval ways of life, and I often find words to describe everyday objects that would belong in that world (and make me think about how people lived practically then)!
#5. READ POETRY!
Poetry is good for teaching you how to pack a lot of meaning and feeling into few words. It helps you sharpen your prose in general.
#6. Understand Character POV
"Bad writing" is a euphemism for lazy writing (writing that feels bland and derivitave) and the culprit for lazy writing is almost ALWAYS a POV (point-of-view) issue rather than an anything-else issue. If your prose is a little clunky, that can be cleaned up later, but what I've found makes my writing feel lackluster at its core is that I haven't grounded the narrative in a character's POV and filtered the words I use through them.
For example, instead of quibbling about what adjectives to use to describe something (her hair was dark, chocolate brown), I could ground it in the character's perspective to make it stronger ("she had her mother's hair, all rough and frothy like weeds in the water of the Bay"). That specificity comes from paying attention to character. I swear if you just focus on character, all other writing elements (worldbuilding, prose, dialogue) will fall more easily into place without you having to stress too much about other stuff.
#7. Learn Form & Theme
Theme is really important if you want emotionally investment from readers (or you want them to remember your story once they're done with it). Also really important for structuring the overall narrative of your story (the who goes where and why).
To find your theme, figure out your story's ending and why it feels right that it ends that way. For form, figure out how you want readers to experience your book. For example, for this Narnia fic, I really wanted the reader to feel drenched and immersed in Narnia. Genuinely whisked away. So the form (how I structured chapters, details I included, words I used) was informed by making the English accessible but slightly archaic (to give it that medieval-feel so it doesn't feel modern).
Likewise, I wanted it to feel fantastical, whimsical but also dark. Mythic. That informed how I characterized the giants and Peter and Ed's journey with them. I wanted the Ettinsmoor Wilds to feel cold and strange and darkened with evil. Jadis, too. For whimsy, I added the folkloric Jack Frost to keep in line with some Lewisian elements (how he included Father Christmas for example) while also grounding Narnia in both ancient Greco-Roman myth and wartime British stories (fairies from works like Peter Pan that were written around the time of the World Wars). Understanding the form for your particular story helps you make practical decisions like that.

I had started working on an epic fantasy series back in 2019, but I've had to leave off it for a while (the worldbuilding and restructuring got too extensive). I've started many original projects but haven't been able to finish them. One I had been very excited by was this series of Christmas-inspired mythologies kind of inspired by Narnia but a lot more mature and experimental. It was called the Ghosts of Christmas and centered on four key Christmas Spirits each. The one I'd made the most headway with was called Merry! and it centered around an all-girl's school in the 1800s that got whisked away to a land full of ghosts and magic and found out they were destined to be knights in service of what are the seven Roman deities of the week. Unfortunately, they are horrible knights and were only given such power due to a Spirit's desperate mistake! It's meant to be both tragic and funny. If you'd ever like to be a beta reader when I get back round to it, I'd be glad to have you along!

lucy looking up to peter. seeing in him not just her older brother, the closest thing she has to a father (she doesn't really remember her father), but he's aslan's chosen one. every time she wants to fight, to learn to pick up a sword, he refuses and it vexes her, but she is defenseless when he asks her to trust him, when he asks her if she thinks aslan chose poorly when he chose him to protect narnia--protect her. and she has to begrudgingly say "no." and he's the only one lucy truly respects in this way, and she worries about her bloodlust. wondering if peter knows, if he would despise her, for how eager she is to taste war. how she's grown wilder in his absence. how her heart quickens at the sight of violence. how some deep part of her wants to scream and rampage against the injustices of the world. against their enemies. the hunger of the lioness. and she's jealous of him. so jealous. of his power and of his office. that aslan trusted him to care for their people. why did he give him the sword and her the cordial? why did he not trust her to fight for and protect their people? didn't aslan think she was brave enough? hadn't she proved herself?
and she doesn't know that peter looks up to her, too. that he sees her as wise beyond her years. seeks her counsel. that while lucy is wishing to join a battle, he is longing for home whenever he goes out to fight. that he cannot allow himself to fail. that he is constantly guilty. constantly wondering if he's doing right by his people. that the only person that makes him really forget is lucy. and he sings her songs to comfort himself when he's far off in another country. and she brings him closest to who he might have been if he hadn't had to grow up so fast. with her games and chases and pranks and jokes. that his heart bursts with love at the sight of her. when she saves him from boring meetings and the burden of his own crown. that he tries to write songs and poetry and feels as if they're never good or clever enough. not like lucy's. that he seeks escape from his own throne and uses art to make the darkness surrounding him beautiful. like she does. that he's jealous of her. so jealous. of how free she is. how aslan revealed himself to her. how certain she is of him. how present aslan is to her. why won't aslan talk to him that way? show himself when he so badly needs him? why does he always have to guess while lucy just knows?
and no matter what they do they're tied to the battlefield. trapped in their roles as perfect mirrors, the high king who wants to be a poet, healer and lover and the high priestess who wants to be a soldier. and for all the praise they get from their people, they can't help but look at each other and feel protective and proud and jealous, jealous, oh so jealous.
This makes me laugh even though I've seen Narnia hundreds of times: The fact that Susan tells Peter not to follow Mr. Beaver and Peter says βHe says he knows the faunβ π
