My writing tumblr!! Mostly Narnia at the moment (hence the name lol) but now and again I write other bits and pieces. I'm on Ao3 as Once_A_Monarch

The grass crunches beneath their feet when they trek across the frosty field up to the hill. When they reach the old apple tree at the top they can see the familiar house not too far off. She wonders who lives there now, thinks briefly of that wardrobe, of snow up to her knees and fur coats, of the four of them all bickering and achingly young. Susan shakes her head and dismisses the thought, the dream. The snowfall had been disappointing the winter they'd lived here - barely enough for a decent snowman. "Looks smaller than I remember it," Peter says. Susan shrugs. "I think that happens when you grow up."

It’s not fair!” She blinks hard, tries to hold back the tears welling up. “I can’t believe you got that because if I did believe it I’d hate you for it, and I don’t want to hate you.” The dam breaks, tears spilling down her cheeks, and her throat is all tight when she swallows. “But you keep acting like they’re not even gone and I hate you for that, too.”

Book Caspeter is actually insane to me tho like imagine you're Caspian and you've been doing everything you can to help the people who your own people opressed to the point of silence. And so you're fighting for your own life but also for their freedom against everything you were supposed to and expected to stand for.

Imagine you're Caspian and you're losing because you have no experience of leading an army and the Narnians are used to hiding, not fighting or working together, and you sound the horn in hopes of calling back the heroes from your childhood stories. And then they come and when you meet him, the first thing the High King does is slay a Wer-Wolf that's attacking you. And it turns out he's your age and he's lost and hurting and angry and he's trying so hard. And he suggests single combat and takes the place that should be yours, and it's for Narnia but it's also to spare you from having to fight your own uncle even if he tells his brother he's not sure if he can win, but you believe in him because you always have.

And then he survives and you survive and the golden High King from your childhood stories is here and real and just like you. And it's so hard to believe in yourself but he believes in you and he crowns you King and entrusts you with his people and his country.

And then he has to leave.

(Except he does - he remembers tripping over the entrance to a wardrobe, the sharp, fresh pain of skinned knees and the immediate realisation of where he was that had hurt far more. It might be more accurate to say he knows. He had never understood it then, doesn't now, thinks he never might. Perhaps it's easier that way, to not think about the why of it so deeply. He's not sure he'd ever find an answer if he tried.) "We're leaving," he chokes out again. "The four of us." And now the worst part: "Su and I... we won't be back." "What?" It's a breath, hardly louder than a heartbeat. His brows knit together. "Then, I will come with you," he declares. Peter finally looks at him and he is vehement and blazing and beautiful and Peter can only swallow around the lump in his throat, shake his head. "You know you can't do that," he smiles sadly. "I'm King," he returns. "Exactly," Peter says softly. For a few long moments they simply stand there in the silence and still and the morning sunlight. Caspian's face is utterly shattered, and the shards of it cut Peter's heart to shreds.
