I'm also going to cast a spotlight on Torches, simply because, after delving into the meaning behind the lyrics... I feel like C.S. Lewis would have benefitted from listening to it, had he been able to.

Jill - The Truth Is A Cave

Bree is afraid of lions because he hasn’t lived free in Narnia. While in Calormen, he learns to fear lions (understandably) because they are wild, dumb animals. It isn't until the end of the book that he develops an appropriate respect of the Lion- one that isn't afraid but does approach Aslan with awe.

Aravis is noted to be a masterful storyteller, because in Calormen, the art of storytelling is something children are taught. I would love for this to be something all schools emphasized- like, yes, essay writing and debate teams can be interesting and important. But I don't think it should come at the expense of being able to craft stories and write (or speak) in a narrative style as well.

Hwin is my favorite character. She is so gentle and humble, especially in comparison to the ever confident Bree. She can be timid and shy, but nine times out of ten she is right. And even though Aravis isn't always the nicest person, she does care so much for her friend. To me, she came across as kind without being overly sweet and unrealistic, and I appreciate seeing that in characters.

"One good deed leads to a bigger and harder one" ugh you got that right. After I do something good I think I deserve a break. But no. Along comes something even more challenging.

When Aslan first reveals himself to Hwin, she runs up to him and shyly says, "You may eat me if you'd like." The entire book they've been on the run from lions, and when she finally meets the Lion she suddenly isn't afraid anymore. She's willing to go through a painful death if it means she'll get to be close to him just once. Getting eaten by Aslan would be far better than living and never once meeting him. But there's also such a gentleness to it- I get the feeling that Aslan would take such care and love with eating Hwin, if that is what he decided to do. I'm probably not making any sense here, am I?

Aslan says, "Do not dare not to dare" and I love that. Keep daring my friends. Keep following your reckless dreams. Don't let the world or your fears tell you no. Do not dare not to dare.

This bit from the book is quite funny, but it actually really resonated with me, because I've always loved telling/writing stories and in 7th-9th grade (I'm from Denmark, 9th grade is mandatory), many of the training sets for the Danish written exams included assignments with creative writing. Like they gave you a prompt and you had to write a short story, stuff like that.

Those assignments were my favorite to do, I loved flexing my writing muscles, but as time passed, they appeared less and less frequently in the training sets, presumably because it wasn't practical or useful or something like that. I even talked with my teacher about it and she was also frustrated that they were removed in favor of assignments that just said "Write a text about x". Not essay, not article, just... write a text, whatever that means.
