The BLM oversees 245 million acres of public lands. The person in charge will shape the future of wildlife habitat, grazing policy, oil and gas development, recreation, and conservation across the West. Steve Pearce has spent his career working against the very mission of this agency.
Pearce is not neutral. He is a longtime champion of privatization and extractive industry, with a record that includes: Repeated efforts to transfer or sell off public lands to states and private interests, persistent attacks on the Endangered Species Act and protections for imperiled wildlife, advocacy for expanded oil and gas drilling and hard-rock mining on public lands, alignment with the livestock industry at the expense of land health, native species, and taxpayers, a career in Congress defined by some of the largest proportions of anti-conservation votes on record.
He has also been a leading voice for the failed ideology that public lands are an economic burden rather than a shared national trust — the same agenda that has left ecosystems degraded, wildlife pushed to the brink, and the public shut out of decisions about the lands we all own.
