the-oc-tavernâ:
Winter cursed softly beneath her breath at the near fall and quietly thanked the stranger as she got her feet beneath her and straightened. Untangling her fingers from the mans clothing, she placed a hand to her chest to steady her racing heart. The adrenaline within her causing her animalistic hormones to pour off her in waves. Though the scent wasnât detectable to anyone who wasnât Other, of course.
As she looked up to thank her savior personally though, she froze. Her fingers curling in the folds of her scarf as she pulled her other hand, which had been casually laying on Nikoâs chest, towards herself. âYou!â She blubbered thoughtlessly, her composure slipping for a fraction of a second before she stilled herself.
Her chin raised defensively and she took a subtle step out of his reach and smoothed her coat over her torso. How could this be? He was suppose to have left town, at least, thatâs what she had thought. In the weeks that had passed, and her pack scavenging the forests, none of them had caught a hint of the rogue wolf Winter had reported to them earlier that month. How could he have possibly remained in town? Undetected?
Just being this close to him, the wild nature of his scent overwhelmed her. However it didnât feel as prominent as it had that first day. The stinging fresh scent of pine, the wet earthy scent of rain, the salty grime of sweat. It was the only way she knew how to describe it, but it was much more oscure than that. Unnamably wild.
âwhat are you doing here?â She asked, her eyes drifting from his out of instinct. Her wolfish nature recognizing the aura of an alpha or a higher ranking animal and looking away our of respect of that power. It was how she had been groomed, after all, to shrink in the presence of power.
Niko watched with amusement as Winterâs expression changed from shock, to gratitude and then to confusion. Amongst the kerfuffle he even thought he caught a scent of something distinctly wolf-y from her, but decided to keep it to himself. Last time heâd pried it hadnât ended particularly well.Â
âI heard that thereâd been a few attacks,â he answered, noticing but not commenting as she dropped her gaze. InterestingâŚÂ âI was curious if this town was affected and so I came back to, uh, visit.âÂ
Judging by her initial reaction, he figured sheâd either forgotten about him entirely or had otherwise dismissed his existence. It was good to see her though, and he let out a contented sigh that he hadnât realised heâd been holding in.Â
Attacks? Winter felt her heart drop like a cold stone to the bottom of her stomach, the hair on the back of her neck standing to attention.
She stiffened visibly, her arms going to wrap around herself as a form of self comfort. "Attacks?" She asked under her breath, eyes darting left and right as people streamed by. A couple of people have them a curious glances, but none lingered for more than a second.
Still, it was in their best interest to remain vigilant. Reaching out, Winter wrapped her fingers around the sleeve of Niko's shirt and pulled him towards a tight ally between a retail shop and mom and pops diner. "What do you mean attacks?" She inquired, still quietly so as not to attract attention from the walkway a few places to their right. Her eyes going up to meet his only for a second before sliding away.

She hadnât followed him, hadnât stopped him, and she couldnât help but think⌠What if?
It had been one and a half months since she met the rogue, and perhaps that was for the best. After that day, Winter had contacted her mate and he had picked her up and grilled her about what had happened, why hadnât she contacted him? Why had she let him get away? But Winter said nothing, curled in the passenger seat of his yellow jeep, staring at her ragged relection, swallowing back her nausea. When they had gotten home, she had told Beck what had happened and he sent a pack out to investigate the perimeter. Winter didnât bother to tell him it was no use, that the rogue was probably long gone, she merely slinked off to her chambers and went to sleep.
After that day, she couldnât stop thinking about it. None of the pack had caught a hint of the rogue, well, nothing substantial that is. However that didnât stop them all from being on high alert, poised for any unwanted visitors on their territory, sniffing the sidewalks of downtown.
Winter tried to put it behind her, but she couldnât shake those eyes, that scentâŚ
Winterâs head was tilted back, examining the heavy clouds that hung overhead. The sky had grown more grey as the autumn season drifted further away, and the winter season crept closer in. The wind picked up, sending a bite to her rosy cheeks and making her cringe as her stomach turned uncomfortably. It wouldnât be long before the pack migrated deeper into the woods, as per tradition and one that Winter dreaded. So immersed in the sky and her own thoughts, Winter hadnât been paying attention to where she was walking, her foot kissing the opening of a crack in the sidewalk and sending her flying into an innocent bystander. She gasped sharply as her ankle strained and her knees buckled beneath her, and she desperately clung to the personâs clothing to keep her knees and the rest of her from meeting the sidewalk.
After their encounter in the library, Niko had figured it was best that he leave. Firstly, he had come to learn when things were a lost cause, and secondly, there was no doubt in his mind that any other wolves in the area would be all too eager to find him. He only hoped Winter was ok.
He hadnât planned on coming back. 6 weeks had passed since heâd been in the area, but he had good reason to return. Getting a drink one night, heâd overheard a man explaining how the locals were reporting a resurgence of animal attacks lately. Instantly curious, he kept listening, hoping to hear more. His mind instantly jumped to vampires, wendigos, werewolves⌠And Winter. He wondered how she was, hopefully less ill now. The place where theyâd met wasnât far from his current location. Maybe her town was involved.
Now, here he was, making his way past all kinds of people as hunted for a good spot to find his bearings. Just as he thought heâd found somewhere suitable to stop, he heard a gasp and felt a sudden weight pulling him forwards. Instinctively, his brow furrowed and he went to grumble out a warning about paying attention, but he stopped, incredulous. What were the chances? Helping the woman to her feet and checking if she was ok, he held her shoulders in his hands as his face lit up with a smile.
âWinter?âÂ
Winter cursed softly beneath her breath at the near fall and quietly thanked the stranger as she got her feet beneath her and straightened. Untangling her fingers from the mans clothing, she placed a hand to her chest to steady her racing heart. The adrenaline within her causing her animalistic hormones to pour off her in waves. "Can I help you with something?" A voice, notably kind but with the timbre of a cat's purr, sounded from behind the old sorcerer. A woman, whose smile was kind and freckled and her face discolored with vitilgo but she was still as gorgeous as a sunset lingered back and watched as Oliver picked through a patch of freshly sprouted herbs she had planted for her friend a few months ago.
The man paused, turning to look at her. He also had some freckles splashed across his face, his eyes a strange, but brilliant light blue. He seemed surprised to see the woman, but something seemed to click as he glanced at her, then the herbs.
âOh!â he flushed a bit, embarrassed, âIâm terribly sorry Miss, are these yours? My mistake, I shouldâve made sure before trying to pick some.â
Celia brought the petite cake to her lips and took a tender bite, her cheeks pinkened from her delight at the sweetness as it dissolved on her tongue.
Ever the lady, Celia brought her hand to hide her mouth as chewed, âoh no! Itâs very tasty, in fact I might have to steal some before I leave later.â She giggled, popping the rest of the sweet treat into her maw. âYouâre quite the talented baker!â She murmured around a mouth full of cake.
He smiled, âThank you~ I can give you the recipe if youâd like.â
A knock on the door distracted him them and he excused himself to go see who it was. Just after he went out of view, a white and orange feline suddenly jumped onto the nearby chair, watching Celia quietly.
âThat would be lovely!â Celia commented, brushing the crumbs from her lips. Nodding as Oliver turned to answer his door, the naga woman quietly reached over for another cake but was startled by the appearance of the feline.
âOh!â She exclaimed softly, hand flying to rest on her chest. Her expression of surprise soon melting into one of joy. âOh, hello there.â She grinned sweetly, reaching a hand out to the cat but not quite touching him.
The feline stared at her quietly, itâs blue gaze strangely intense. Once she reached out however, it sniffed at her hand for a few moments before shaking itâs head and settling down in the nearby chair. Not an overly friendly familiar it seems.
Oliver came back, frowning a little, âEr⌠Celia? How comfortable are you around other naga?â
Celia nodded, respecting the felines boundaries. Sitting in quiet companionship with the cat while she waited for Oliver to return.
Celia glanced up when he returned to the room, a content smile on her face until he asked his question. She held his gaze, but the light in her eyes seemed to dim ever slightly. Raising her chin, she stated rather coolly, "I have no problem with them, why?"

âOh!â he flushed a bit, embarrassed, âIâm terribly sorry Miss, are these yours? My mistake, I shouldâve made sure before trying to pick some.â
Celia did have the slightest concern as they followed of the situation of being able to fit through the door, considering she was a bit larger than the man⌠of course if it was necessary she could use the charm she had around her wrist, but that didnât seem to be an issue when they made it to their destination.
She Naga woman made a small and pleasant âohâ as she had a look around. âQuite the lovely home youâve got hereâŚâ
There was some shuffling from what mustâve been the kitchen as âSprinklesâ started to fix up some tea like Oliver had asked while the man himself directed Celia to a large, comfortable couch she could settle on. âFeel free to make yourself at home, I just need to go check on the food~â
Celiaâs head turned towards the noise as she tried to catch a glimpse of this Sprinkles person, it wasnât unusual for something magical beings to have a maid or butler esque creature to work for them⌠Turning her attention back to the man when they made it to the sitting room, she was impressed by the scale of some of his furniture and how safe it appeared for someone of her⌠Species? Though she did have to keep in mind the fact that he did take in travelers, which didnât necessarily mean humans.
âOh, thank you.â She said with a smile, although when Oliver left the room she touched her bracelet, stroking it with two fingers before shrinking down into a body she was oddly more comfortable. Although⌠if she knew she was going to be in anothers home she wouldâve prepared for more appropriate clothing⌠Her shirt was fine, being the white crop top she normally wore, however her skirt was long and a maroon shade that tappered up the right leg, covering effeciently but leaning too much on the casual side for her tastes. The last time she had to hide she had gone to the beach with her friends and hadnât quite gotten around to changingâŚ
It was hard to say what or who this Sprinkles person was. The kitchen was out of view, and while Oliver appeared to be carrying out a conversation with someone, there wasnât another audible voice replying to him. He sounded fairly cheerful, though, as that seemed the usual for him, and he appeared to be talking about Celia. Another name popped up a few times, Vincent perhaps? Maybe a friend of hisâŚ
Either way, Oliver returned a few minutes later with a large tray, which he set down on the coffee table, setting up a nice little lunch for them, still humming to himself, âI see you decided to change a little. Is it more comfortable for you like that?â
Celia didnât mean to listen is, she really didnât, but couldnât help herself. Only catching snippets of the conversation, a few names here and there⌠When Oliver came back Celia sat a little straighter, adverting to gaze to make it seem like she was taking in the room, startling at his question. âIs it⌠Oh, umâŚâ Celia seemed to shift a little awkwardly, cheeks reddening. âY-yes I⌠I mean my normal body is naturally more comfortable, this body feels a little heavier and tighter, I just⌠Prefer this one.â Celia tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, hands fidgeting in her lap but she managed a small smile towards the sorcerer.
Shaking herself and shifting closer to the edge of her seat she inhaled, âthe food smells lovely.â
He smiled brightly, clapping his hands together in his delight at the compliment, âThank you very much~ Iâve had years of practice, but are you sure you want to stay in that form? I honestly donât mind if you would rather stay ânaturalâ, I know how terribly uncomfortable staying like that can get.â
His tone and expression were of sincere worry, only wishing for Celia to be comfortable in his home.
Celia delicately reached for one of the treats on the offered platter, glancing up at her polite companion.
âOh no, its quite alright actually. Believe it or not,â she started with a bit of an awkward chuckle, âI prefer this form over, ah, the otherâŚâ She glanced away, bringing the treat to her lips.
Her expression brightened as she casually offered a switch of topic, âwhat are these, if you dont mind my asking?â Celia inquired, waving the treat between her fingers.
He hesitated before nodding softly, âIf youâre certain, and theyâre just some simple teacakes. If you donât like them I can bring you something else.â
Oliver had lots of sweets left over from his last bout of baking. He should really try to contain himself more so he didnât end up with so much left over⌠or maybe start a shop?
Celia brought the petite cake to her lips and took a tender bite, her cheeks pinkened from her delight at the sweetness as it dissolved on her tongue.

the-oc-tavernâ:
Winter closed her shaking hand into a fist atop the table, forcing herself still. She was sure she still looked pale, but she was trying to collect herself as much as possible. Focusing on the scratch of plastic against her teeth as she nibbled on itâs edge. Her stomach felt weak, as if she needed to throw up, but she tried to suppress the sensation with the coolness of water that trickled down her throat with each swallow.Â
She took cautious glances at the man who sat across from her, leaning uneasily back into her heavy wooden chair. As nice as the gesture may be, she still didnât know this man. Not to mention, he had to have followed her out of the coffee shop to be here now. Plus, she couldnât shake the scent that followed him, the scent that got her here in the first place.Â
At that thought, she felt the gentle weight of his hand settle over her arm. The touch startling her so that she jerked back, plastic cup slipping from her hand and bouncing off her thigh onto the carpet. The water that had still been inside soaking her jeans, though she was thankful she had drank a majority of it before this. She clutched her arm to her chest, gripping her wrist with the hand that held the cup. She didnât mean to be so jumpy, but she couldnât help it. Her, and her wolf, were on high alert. The paranoia rolling off her in waves as her other half prowled around underneath her skin, begging to be let free.Â
Winter eyes locked on the manâs hand, pushing her chair back a fraction of an inch further, âI-â her voice cracked, and she swallowed. Blue eyes flicking up to meet his, heart racing with her nerves. âIâm afraid I donât know what you mean, sir.âÂ
Niko reached out instinctively as he watched the cup of water go sailing, feeling guilty that heâd shocked her so much. He could sense that she was highly uncomfortable, and he could hear her heart racing, both things reminding him of the creatures he hunted, realising they were out of options. Normally it was a feeling that filled him with ancient, bestial delight but in this case it was the opposite. The last thing he wanted to do was prey on her.Â
Continuing to watch as she inched away, anxiety emanating from every inch of her being, he couldnât help but frown. Standing up and pushing his chair in, hands now resting on the back, he looked her directly in the eyes before speaking.
âIâd be lying if I said I believe you, but, ok, sure. Iâll get out of your hair. Sorry for earlier.â With that, he made his way to the exit, hoping that sheâd stop him.

Fish had been lazily floating around with a school of fish through the maze of underwater tunnels and caves, on her back watching the sunlight flicker and shiver underneath the water when she felt somethingâŚ. Pop.
And crack, and the school of fish vanished in a blink. The water moved with a âWOOSHâ around her and the fragile coral bridge she had been beneath cracked as she rose up above the water. Flopping about in the water, Fishâs head spun as she rose higher out of the water and the currents she was so use to feeling on her smooth skin and scales suddenly felt⌠uncomfortable.
Squaking, limbs feeling heavier and more clumsy that Fish was use to feeling she flopped backwards in the once calm lake. âVinny!â Fish squealed, roared? Calling the first name that came to her in her panicked state. Something slim and long wriggling behind her back and making obnoxious splashes and slaps against the water.
((Sorry a little long đ been a while since in written anything))
Fish flinched at the assault of water, but couldnât help but giggle at Vincentâs defense. The banter giving Fish a light enough heart to push herself on all fours and start taking her first steps towards shore. A little wobbly at first, similar to a baby giraffe taking its first steps.
Vincent had to hang back, but he watched her take her first, unsteady, steps on the sand. He hoped sheâd be alright, especially since he was stuck out in the water right now.
He supposed he could try using his amulet, but he wasnât sure if that would really work like it was meant to if he was no longer a nagaâŚ
The trekk to the nearby shore was a slow one, but Fish managed to make it there without any fumbling mishaps. Crawling almost suspiciously onto land. As a nymph, Fish couldnât be on land any longer than an hour before she started having separation symptoms from the lack of moisture. The time could be manipulated, of course but it was⌠unsafe.
Once Fish made it to shore, she hauled her soaking mass of feathers and fur out of the water and flopped on the grass like a wet rag. She hung close to the water, afraid to stay farther into the unknown forest. If things were different, sheâd rush off to find shelter with Vincent. But with Vincent bound to the water, she had no where safe to go.
Vincent had to think of something, Fish couldnât just be left to fend for herself, and he didnât know how long either of them would be stuck this way. Biting his lip, he racked his brain, trying to think of any kind of solution.
It eventually came to him and he called out to Fish, to follow him along the shore. If luck was on their side, they might be able to contact Oliver from one of his many houses, and if Vincent recalled correctly, one of them was actually nearby.
Slowly moving along, as close to shore as he dared to be, Vincent headed towards the seaside cabin while he kept an eye on Fish. If they were incredibly lucky, Oliver would already be there, but if not, they should be able to contact him.
Fishâs best idea was to stick it out by the water until whatever spell was cast on her wore off, she had no other option, that is, until now.
Fish did as Vincent instructed, following along the shore, as close to the water as she felt comfortable, crouched down as she followed Vincent.
Once the cabin came into sights, unfamiliar to Fish and so human, she shrunk back and closer to the water. Fish had always been taught how dangerous humam-things were, and she had never seen this cabin before.
Vincent continued moving closer to it, knowing this one actually had an entrance from the water, though he paused when he noticed Fish had stopped. Frowning, he tried to move closer to her, âItâs alright, this place belongs to a friend of mine. He can help keep you safe, it looks like weâll have to call him here first thoughâŚâ
It was hard to make yourself small in a body so big, normally she would have shrunk down in the water and easily disappeared, among the many caves which no human could follow. Now, it wasnt so easy.
Fish glanced uneasily towards Vincent, his reassuring tone and gently concerned eyes easing her suspicion into something forming into trust. Taking careful steps towards the door, Fish paused again, this time with a question.
"How am I suppose to get in?"

Fish's best idea was to stick it out by the water until whatever spell was cast on her wore off, she had no other option, that is, until now.

Something came up behind her, tentacles wrapping around her body to hold her still but also lifting her up out of the water and moving towards a rocky outcropping that had been revealed by the low tide.
Fishâs heart banged, terrified, against her ribs as she was restrained. Too much happening at once.
Feeling something solid now beneath her, Fish took a minute to catch her breath. Her body felt like it weighed a million tons, she felt responsible for limbs she didnât remember having a second go and the humid, sticky, wet feeling made her⌠uncomfortable.
Rolling over onto her stomach, Fish lifted her head to peer back at the water, and at the thing that had lifted her out of it. Her own panic and confusion coming to a stern halt,
âVinny?â
It certainly looked like Vincent, but he was missing his horns and the random scales that used to dot his body. Instead he had fins and what looked like gills on him.
He smiled wryly at his name, nodding a little to confirm it, âHey Fish. I see youâve also met the end of a transformation spell, though I think yours is probably a bit more disorientingâŚâ
The wet sand between the scraggle of rock shifted and caught in Fishâs feathers. Her paws digging divots in the sand as she pushed herself into something similar to an upright position.
âW-what happened to you?â
He hummed, leaning back a little so he was now floating on his back, several dark appendages rising up to take hold of the rock so he wouldnât drift off, âI think someone thought it would be funny to turn me into a merperson⌠So now instead of half snake I seem to be half octopus. Thankfully I was hunting around here and not somewhere else or this wouldâve turned into a complete disaster for me⌠Seems like youâve become a Griffin of some kindâŚâ
Moving so he was upright again, he drifted closer, frowning a little in concern, âAre you alright?â
A griffinâŚ
Her feathers were white and almost holographic when the light found them through the cracks in rock. Her paws her white as well, though appearing grey due to the water that soaked them. Her beak curved menacingly downward and the feathers around her face were fluffy like a baby chickâs despite the water dripping down past her murky green-blue eyes that remained the same as before if not bigger and more menacing. Her tail moved on its own accord curling and thumping against the wall of rock around her.
Fishâs feathers fluffed up as she adjusted herself again against the sand and rock, feeling cramped and uncomfortable.
âThe waterâŚâ Fish muttered, voice sounding odd to her ears, âFeels icky nowâŚâ
He frowned, reaching out to comfort her, âI know⌠Hopefully the spell will wear off soon.â
Grunting he tried to climb up onto the rock, but gave up since Fish was already cramped up there. Sighing, he put a hand on her side, nudging her a bit, âCome on, you should get back to the shore, Iâll help you wade through the water.â
Fish nodded, shuffling towards the water despite her discomfort and dipped a paw in. The water quivered around her newly found fur and she shuddered at the foreign feeling.
Staring at the water like it was a puzzle or enemy she was trying to figure out how to approach, Fish muttered, âeverything feels so heavy and obnoxious,â turning her head to look at Vinny with something like a smirk on her beak, âis this what in feels like for you all the time?â
He splashed her in response, âIâm a bit heavy, but I can move around quite easily, and I was perfectly at home in the water even in my original form. Donât compare having four legs, wings, and being half furry and half feathery to having the lower half of a snake.â
