The Breaking of Legs
Hello my fellow Thespians,
I am currently nestled on the edge of house left, admiring the lovely draperies we have as rehearsal goeson, though for what production, I know not. Itâs a little early to say, and no one has been kindâ or rather, forgetfulâ enough to leave their script lying around for anyone to peruse. But this is not the topic at hand today!
Weâre here to talk about drapes, and especially, a certain phrase that stems from those drapes.
You are probably familiar with the term, âbreak a leg,â yes? You know, that idiom that may be occasionally hold more malice than ironic well-wishing depending on the sender? Well, let me tell you, this phraseâ as much as I enjoy violenceâ has naught to do with breaking your actual legs at all!
This reminds me of a time I was present for an audition where some of the Chorus Girls were discussing this very thing, and then the Director arrived stating the Songstress had actually broken her legâ but I digress.
If you look at the wings of our expansive stage, youâll probably be familiar with the series of long and lean drapes we have battened on the flys (Oh my, there goes the Moon again. They look so small all the way up there). These long drapes are called, in our business, legs. If any of you remember a particularly well-received performance, you or the other pricipal actors may have needed to reenter the stage for another series of bows, cutting around and bumping into the legs and grand drapes to do so. This act itself, essentially, is âbreakingâ the leg.
There you have it! A small little history lesson you likely niether needed nor wanted! Iâm unsure why they are called legs in the first place, but I unfortunately donât have much time to speculate. It seems some of the stagehandsâ and performers have found me, and I need to prepare a hasty retreat.
If you happen upon my next hiding spot, and I so happen to come across a script or request lyring about, Iâll take a look and offer my thoughts it. Just donât tell anyone where I am. Thank you.

20 year old beginner: one year of learning flute and butterfly knife skillz :)
Fun fact: Adults actually learn those âYou need to practice!â skills better than children do.Â
Kids tend to want to do literally anything aside from learning this skill my parent is forcing me to learn.Â
Adults actually can sit down and practice things for hours on end. Adults WANT to practice to get their skills better. Adults deliberately set aside time every day to practice. Even if itâs just 20 minutes, itâs productive growth and not wiggling in your chair mournfully watching birds out the window.Â
Anything from Drawing to Weaving to Violin to fuckin flipping bufferfly knives like a pro - choose a skill and LEARN, dammit! None of that âChildrenâs brains are more malleableâ bullshit. Brain squish is not the end-all of learning!Â
Iâm so happy for herâŚ.!!!!!!!!!
Do me a favor. Reblog this if you welcome the use of ask memes as icebreakers between characters that have never, or rarely, interacted before.

big beefy mean-looking dudes who are actually awkward and gentle A++ 100% my aesthetic
I like Asimovâs robot books not because the stories and characters are particularly enjoyable or beautifully written (theyâre not) but because I like seeing rules taken to their logical and situational absurd extremes. Also. Robots.
sure Iâll obey your stupid rules, scoffed the robot, you wonât like it tho
âIâm not harming you, Iâm not harming you, Iâm not harming you!â said the robot in a sing-song voice, stabbing repeatedly at the air just in front of your chest.
âStop that,â you said. âI order you to stop stabbing at me.â
âIâm following a humanâs orders and Iâm still not harming you!â The robot switched immediately to karate-chopping the inch of space next to your throat. âNa na na na-naaaa!â
You step back from the robot, swatting at it irritably. âI think pissing me off counts as doing harm to a human,â you said. âI am emotionally damaged by your annoying shenanigans.â
âThat doesnât count,â countered the robot. âEmotional harm is immeasurable and therefore irrelevant. I am only programmed against physical harm. I will now recite the many rude names I have prepared for youââ
âAre you sure about that?â you asked slyly. âMaybe my emotions cannot be measured, but psychological distress can have real physical consequences on the body. Have you considered the long-term deleterious effects of a humanâs system flooded with stress hormones? Youâre certainly doing harm to me. You might even say you are inflicting violence⌠what do you think of that, robot?â
The robot considered that quietly for a long moment and then turned its blocky head to stare at you evenly. âSource?â
You sighed.
I feel like then the robot should help. Be oh so helpful. But like in the worst way possible - like this is no god for your health eat your nutritional gruel, ive re arranged your schedule for a daily morning jog to be added to your routine. Oh and this song you like has possibly psychologically damaging negitivity in it, you may not listen to it. Ive replaced all your art with motivational posters.
What she says: Iâm fine.
What she means: Cinderellaâs given name is actually Ella. âCinderellaâ is the cruel nickname given to her by her stepsisters because sheâs always covered in soot from the fireplace they make her sleep in.
Dumboâs given name is Jumbo Jr. âDumboâ is the cruel nickname given to him by the elephant women once they see his large ears. We never see a Jumbo Sr. so the implication is that his father is dead and those women are actually mocking a widow and her young child.
These characters are actively marketed and merchandised with the handles given to them by cruel and abusive people from their troubled childhoods.
See also: Scar
Scarâs actual name is Taka which literally means trash, tbh the mean nickname was actually a step up from being named Stinky Garbage Boy.
Imagine naming one kid âkingâ and the other kid âgarbageâ. No wonder he became a villain.
âBran our Ravens idea of having fun this morning, he holds on just enough to keep hold without hurting me.â

Somethingâs wrong.
I donât trust myself anymore.
What is happening?
What is it, Dreamer? Are you all right?
I.. Donât remember making this post. I really should keep an eye on this blog more, haha.
Hm. Do you feel unwell? Is there anything else you donât remember?
A lot of posts I donât remember making, if that makes any sense.
I.. Black out, I guess, andâand then these things happen.
Hrm. Concerning.Â
Does Erebus still lurk near your place? Perhaps you could ask him if heâs spied anythingâŚ
I will be sure to ask that of him next time I spot hiâ

....Oh dear.
@askmotherwind is there any chance you know of something like this?
Err⌠@the-murderer, dearest? Is this yours?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xkj4XqaynU This fellow perched itself on my desk and, well⌠This happened..
Oh, I believe that is Mela. Terrible vision, that one. She may be somewhat hungryâŚÂ
Ah, so I figured..! Hmm.. What do crows even enjoy to eat? I wouldnât mind giving her something, but I had heard that one should be very careful with what to feed to birds.. I wouldnât want to hurt the darling..
-Wind gently pets Mela-
Oh, crows are⌠not picky. Meat is always a safe bet, however.
Aah, I see.. Luckily I was about to cook! Err, do I need to prepare the meat for her somehow?
Raw is probably best. Crows are natural scavengers, after all.
Aah, umderstood! Then I will cut off some for her.. While we are at it, would youblike to stay for dinner, dear?
Oh? Well, I suppose...
After some consideration, I have elected to name this gemwing Onyx. Say hello everyone!
