thank you so much!!!! welcome!! i feel like i should not be giving advice but anyway lets give it a go

my tips are:

1. find a base code you like - i used seyche's for ages until I was finally comfortable enough in making my own (which I haven't actually used on a release yet). it's good bc it has lots of instructions within the code to help you out. eggdesign also has a really good one for beginners. i recommend just diving in and playing around until you get a good feel for it.

2. i would recommend sketching or having some idea of what you're doing but tbqh i mostly just make it up as i go and see what happens. it makes my codes really messy and i have to spend much much longer fixing them though, whoops! i don't use figma or XD or anything else. i use github to host my codes, and use codepen when i want to figure out little things. tumblr can be realy annoying sometimes so i prefer to code in the acutal customizer.

3. in terms of other resources, things i use the most are phosphor icons, google fonts, eggdesign & annasthms css photoset script, eggdesigns day/night mode (this is also really excellent for anything you want to do on click with some tinkering), this guide on flexbox, and w3schools. google is your friend! if you google "css accordion tutorial" you'll find heeeeaaaaps.

4. oh also have the tumblr docs bookmarked and if you're working on something have it open. it explains how stuff is implemented on tumblr.

Pink Eared Duck. Is pink eared only in the most strictly technically sense. I am severely underwhelmed. 3/10, i added points for the zebra stripes and whatever nonsense is going on with that beak

Spectacled Eider. I went to high school with this duck. They are chronically sleep deprived. They turn in all their homework but only with utmost resentment. Overachiever w/ high functioning depression, they will likely develop a debilitating video game addiction in college. 9/10 i like the colors 

Hooded Merganser. There is no reason for this to be classified as a duck. This should not have been included on the list. I don’t know what this bird is but I find it highly suspect. 0/10 keep this thing away from me

King Eider. Gets points for being a seaduck, which I didn’t know was a real thing. Also i really like the colors. How I imagine the Spectacled Eider once it gets therapy in its mid 20s and sorts out some deep-seated personal issues. 8/10 quality duck but lacks the Eider’s high school edginess

Write that happy ending that is so sweet, it’ll rot your teeth right out of your head. Even if people say happy endings that sweet aren’t realistic or whatever

Write that heart-wrenching death scene just so you can write something decadently comforting afterward. Even if people complain that death scenes are only for the DramaTM.

i understand that some games are designed to be as frustrating as possible and im perfectly fine with that. but singleplayer splatoon 2 levels shouldnt be making me so frustrated that i wanted to bite my fingers off. its advertised towards kids.

colorblind modes: if your game relies on different colors to convey information it’s absolutely essential to include accessibility options for those who are colorblind.

screen readers: is there text on the screen that includes crucial information? provide a screen reader as an option for low-vision people.

adjustable ui size: this is very helpful for anyone who is low-vision and needs things to be larger!

closed captioning and subtitles: and not just for dialogue! do it for stuff like footsteps and guns shooting! and if you can make it so the direction its coming from is indicated.

font replacement/adjustment: dyslexia is a thing that exists! consider that when making games!

ability to turn off motion controls: self explanatory, i have occasional hand tremors and dont want to deal with that sometimes.

button remapping: it seems minor but its actually incredibly important to anyone who may not be able to use all their fingers or both hands or even have hands at all. 

options to automatically button mash or just eliminating the need to repeatedly click the same button quickly: i think thats just bad design and i havent met a single person who enjoys that in a game. anyone with arthritis, general joint pain, or limited mobility in their fingers will tell you that its not fun.

unambiguous warnings: this one is important. too many times ive seen horror games try to be cute or quirky with their trigger warnings. if you’re worried about spoilers then make the specific trigger list something you need to click to reveal, but for the love of god just. give us unambiguous warnings. 

minimizing flashing or bright colors/giving options to turn off flashing or bright colors/adequate warnings for flashing or bright colors: this should be a given but im shocked at how often this is ignored.

bonus if you really want to cover your bases. an arachnophobia mode: while arachnophobia isnt really a disability ive seen multiple cases of people not being able to play games due to their arachnophobia. this one is something that ive never seen a game do, its always 3rd party mods that deal with this. having a mode where you can replace or disable any spiders in the game would make games way more accessible to players who have arachnophobia. as common as arachnophobia is i think it would be a useful implementation for many people.

most of all: research accessibility options and get feedback from disabled and neurodivergent people!

So I’ve been working on writing Merlin fanfic and, like a moron, I decided I wanted it to be more historically accurate because the actual canon is a shitshow about that.

I start doing some writing, some researching, and discover that stirrups won’t arrive in Britain until the 10th century or so. King Arthur is like… early 500′s roughly.

So no stirrups. That’s not a big problem. Except it is argued that it might have been a major contributor to feudalism. Which, ok, good to know. So Arthur is pre-feudalism, got it. Shouldn’t change too much, right? (wrong)

Oh, what’s this that feudalism requires for those new wealthy landowners?

Fucking. Primogeniture.

(friendly reminder: this is the right of inheritance for the firstborn son. Like for land, or titles of nobility… or kings)

So if my research is right, King Arthur didn’t have an inherent right to the throne because he was the firstborn male heir. He was fucking ELECTED. (or maybe a lady in the lake threw a sword at him, who knows, this is all myth anyway)

But the fucking kicker?

The thing that DOESN’T EXIST in King Arthur’s time?? Because feudalism won’t show up for several centuries?

Fucking.

Knights.

In summary, the story of King Arthur is just modern day fanfiction from medieval/feudal Europe with rampant OCs, overpowered everyone, too much fucking drama, and like three different werewolves.

There’s literally a book exploring this and how modern retellings have continued the spirit of High Medieval versions called Silk and Potatoes: Contemporary Arthurian Fantasy. Because silk and potatoes, like stirrups, knights, and feudalism, also didn’t exist in post-Roman Britain.
