A better, more positive Tumblr
Since its founding in 2007, Tumblr has always been a place for wide open, creative self-expression at the heart of community and culture. To borrow from our founder David Karp, weβre proud to have inspired a generation of artists, writers, creators, curators, and crusaders to redefine our culture and to help empower individuality.
Over the past several months, and inspired by our storied past, weβve given serious thought to who we want to be to our community moving forward and have been hard at work laying the foundation for a better Tumblr. Weβve realized that in order to continue to fulfill our promise and place in culture, especially as it evolves, we must change. Some of that change began with fostering more constructive dialogue among our community members. Today, weβre taking another step by no longer allowing adult content, including explicit sexual content and nudity (with some exceptions). Β
Letβs first be unequivocal about something that should not be confused with todayβs policy change: posting anything that is harmful to minors, including child pornography, is abhorrent and has no place in our community. Weβve always had and always will have a zero tolerance policy for this type of content. To this end, we continuously invest in the enforcement of this policy, including industry-standard machine monitoring, a growing team of human moderators, and user tools that make it easy to report abuse. We also closely partner with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Internet Watch Foundation, two invaluable organizations at the forefront of protecting our children from abuse, and through these partnerships we report violations of this policy to law enforcement authorities. We can never prevent all bad actors from attempting to abuse our platform, but we make it our highest priority to keep the community as safe as possible.
So what is changing?
Posts that contain adult content will no longer be allowed on Tumblr, and weβve updated our Community Guidelines to reflect this policy change. We recognize Tumblr is also a place to speak freely about topics like art, sex positivity, your relationships, your sexuality, and your personal journey. We want to make sure that we continue to foster this type of diversity of expression in the community, so our new policy strives to strike a balance.
Why are we doing this?
It is our continued, humble aspiration that Tumblr be a safe place for creative expression, self-discovery, and a deep sense of community. As Tumblr continues to grow and evolve, and our understanding of our impact on our world becomes clearer, we have a responsibility to consider that impact across different age groups, demographics, cultures, and mindsets. We spent considerable time weighing the pros and cons of expression in the community that includes adult content. In doing so, it became clear that without this content we have the opportunity to create a place where more people feel comfortable expressing themselves.
Bottom line: There are no shortage of sites on the internet that feature adult content. We will leave it to them and focus our efforts on creating the most welcoming environment possible for our community.
So whatβs next?
Starting December 17, 2018, we will begin enforcing this new policy. Community members with content that is no longer permitted on Tumblr will get a heads up from us in advance and steps they can take to appeal or preserve their content outside the community if they so choose. All changes wonβt happen overnight as something of this complexity takes time.
Another thing, filtering this type of content versus say, a political protest with nudity or the statue of David, is not simple at scale. Weβre relying on automated tools to identify adult content and humans to help train and keep our systems in check. We know there will be mistakes, but weβve done our best to create and enforce a policy that acknowledges the breadth of expression we see in the community.
Most importantly, weβre going to be as transparent as possible with you about the decisions weβre making and resources available to you, including more detailed information, product enhancements, and more content moderators to interface directly with the community and content.
Like you, we love Tumblr and what itβs come to mean for millions of people around the world. Our actions are out of love and hope for our community. We wonβt always get this right, especially in the beginning, but we are determined to make your experience a positive one.

tumblr is shutting everything down, not sure this blog will survive the cull
All, weβve heard from a bunch of you who are concerned about Tumblr censoring NSFW/adult content. While there seems to be a lot of misinformation flying around, most of the confusion seems to stem from our complicated flagging/filtering features. Let me clear up (and fix) a few things:
1. Last year, we added βSafe Modeβ which lets you filter out NSFW content from tag and search pages. This is enabled by default for new users and can be toggled in your Dashboard Settings. As some of you have pointed out, disabling Safe Mode still wasnβt allowing search results from all blogs to appear. This has been fixed.
2. Some search terms are blocked (returning no results) in some of our mobile apps. Unfortunately, different app environments have different requirements that we do our best to adhere to. The reason you see innocent tags like #gay being blocked on certain platforms is that they are still frequently returning adult content which our entire app was close to being banned for. The solution is more intelligent filtering which our team is working diligently on. Weβll get there soon. In the meantime, you can browseΒ #lgbtq β which is moderated by our community editors β in all of Tumblrβs mobile apps. You can also see unfiltered search results on tumblr.com using your mobile web browser.
3. Earlier this year, in an effort to discourage some not-so-nice people from using Tumblr as free hosting for spammyΒ commercialΒ porn sites, we started delisting this tiny subset of blogs from search engines like Google. This was never intended to be an opt-in flag, but for some reason could be enabled after checking off NSFW β Adult in your blog settings. This was confusing and unnecessary, so weβve dropped the extra option. If your blog contains anything too sexy for the average workplace, simply check βFlag this blog as NSFWβ so people in Safe Mode can avoid it. Your blog will still be promoted in third-party search engines.
Aside from these fixes, there havenβt been any recent changes to Tumblrβs treatment of NSFW content, and our view on the topic hasnβt changed. Empowering your creative expression is the most important thing in the world to us. Making sure people arenβt surprised by content they find offensive is also incredibly important and we are always working to put more control in your hands.
Sorry for all of the confusion. If you have any more concerns or suggestions on how we can make these features clearer or more useful, please email us!
Their view on that topic changed... Welcome to the Puritanical age of Tumblr.

Every time I talk to my roommate I feel my pineal gland calcify and my third eye close a little bit more

The woman in the bathroom is trans and is scared that if she comes out of the stall the women that walked in will insult or harass her. but when she comes out they compliment her on her dress instead. The add ends with sayingΒ βstress tested for women.β It means Secret is including trans women in their definition of women.Β
I have reblogged this three times now, each one mentioning the fact that Secret not only included a trans woman, but that they /had the other women compliment her dress and treat her with respect/. I will reblog this every time I see it because itβs so important. More companies should involve trans people in their marketing - we do exist. Props to Secret for getting in on this movement. It makes me really happy to see more of the trans community represented in daily television.

Court Hearing
I had a small claims hearing today and signed off on the plantiff's dismissal of the case. The judge, reviewing the paper, looks over his glasses and says to me:
"Here is your name printed, is that correct? And above it, you signed LOL as your signature?"
Me: "Yes, sir. That's my signature, I mean it reads as LOL but it's my signature."
Judge: "Let me clarify, this is your official signature?"
Me: "Yes, sir. I've been signing everything for the last 20+ years that way."
Judge: Dismisses case.
Me: (approaching the bench and showing my license) "See your honor?"
Judge: sees license signature..."So the first letter is an E?"
"Yes sir"
My 4 year old nephew loves to paint his nails. Any time he sees someone wear nail polish he asks if he can have some too. The most difficult part is getting him to decide what color, because he he wants all of them.
Nail polish is for everyone.
