“B?”
Tim asks as he enters the batcave, having changed from his suit to more comfortable pajamas, shoulder length hair still wet with rain.
He wants to go to bed, but his hands twitch with anxiety at the thought of leaving when there is still work to be done.
“Mad Hatter’s been taken care of. Is there anything else I should do?”
{@caffeine-and-coldcases}
[Bruce looked over at the call, chair creaking under him as he turned fully to face Tim. His eyes caught the anxious movement and he exhaled slowly through his nose, standing up and walking towards Tim]
"There's nothing else tonight, you should go get some rest."
[Bruce hesitated for a second, before placing a hand on Tim's shoulder.]
"Good work tonight.
Tim nodded hesitantly, letting out a sigh.
"You sure? I can work on cases if there's any. But, thanks."
He yawned, rubbing his eyes as he leaned into the hand on his shoulder.
"Go to bed, Tim."
[He replied, not willing to budge on this matter, the boy looked half-asleep standing up.]
"If I do find something interesting for you, I'll save it until tomorrow, unless it's urgent."
"Fine. Promise you'll wake me if it's urgent?"
They ask, fighting back another yawn. Tim doesn't know why they're so exhausted, maybe exposure from a new toxin from Ivy? Or.... How long has it been since he slept? Several days, he thought.
"Yes, now go to bed."
[Bruce said without flinching, though he didn't intend on keeping that promise in the slightest. Bruce repressed a sigh and steered Tim to the elevator himself, and realised it was well past 12AM.]
"Happy birthday son."
Tim grumbled but agreed, letting Bruce steer him towards the elevator. He wants to protest, but he's exhausted and just happy to have his dad's mentor's attention.
At Bruce's words, he glanced at the batcomputer as he entered the elevator.
"Oh... Thanks, B." He smiled slightly. "Wow. I didn't even realize."
[Bruce softened slightly as the elevator rose.]
"We'll do something for you in the morning."
[He walked them both to Tim's room.]
"Sleep for now."

Man I can’t believe I forgot my own birthday…again
Happy birthday Tim.
Is there anything you would like to do?
Bruce (@the-brooding-bat), it’s 5am- go to sleep-

Hn...l'm working on a report. I can sleep later.
yeahhh no. The report can wait. Sleep cannot.
It's the other way aroun—
...
And why are you awake, Clark?
Why am I awake? C'mon, B, you know I don't really need to sleep. You, on the other hand, should be getting 8 hours a night- or well... day, I guess.
I'm fine.

[Bruce turned at the sound of a yell, and caught the offending missile-child as she lunged at him, stepping back with a grunt. His brows creased slightly as she kept talking, he didn't know this girl, but it appeared an alternate version of him did. He wasn't surprised, merely contemplative. She knew where the Cave was, and knew he was Batman even though he was out of the suit right now. He highly doubted she was lying, but the old paranoia kicked in regardless and he decided to be cautious.]
"Wrong universe."
[Bruce replied, trying not to sound gruff while talking to someone who might be one of his alternate self's children.]
"I'm sorry, I don't. Another version of myself adopted you, I presume?"
“Yeah- I tend to shift universes a lot…some of them are hard to distinguish between…my bad. Another version of you adopted me, yeah. I like being in your company, every universe’s company. So can I stay and hang out with you? Pleaseeeeeeeeeeee?”
[Bruce listened to her explanation, and it checked out. He's seen several alternate versions of his own children, and there's no reason why this version of him couldn't have adopted another child. He'd be watching her closely but she didn't seem to be much of a threat...not yet at least.]
"Hrn...yes, you can."
[He gently set her down. She seemed to be around Jason's age.]
"May I ask your name?"
“I’m Mara!” She grinned, staying clinging to him even though she was set down. She seemed very…affectionate? “Ooo I wonder if you know this universes me! I probably interviewed you before or something. Soooooo tell me everything! I wanna know how this universe is different to mine.” She swung her legs like a little kid
[Bruce noted the name—and her clinginess, deducing that she must have had a rough childhood, and her version of him must have been among the first to treat her well. A familiar pang shot through his chest at the thought of a hurt child, and decided to let her cling to him without saying anything about it]
"Perhaps, I can't recall right now." He thought. "Where would you like me to begin?

[He raises an eyebrow, looking up from where we was working on a case on the Batcomputer, and turns in his chair fully to face Jason, leaning back against it. That look is never a good sign. Bruce is mostly just happy that his son is willingly interacting with him]
"Jason...is something the matter?"
“My bones hurt and I wanted to bother you.”
He sat on the floor by the chair, pulling off his helmet and shaking his hair out.
[Bruce hummed in acknowledgement, a small frown finding his lips. He hated seeing his kids in pain, but Jason's predicament was one even he had no solution for.]
"Is there anything I can do?"
[Bruce observed Jason to see if there was any visible pain on his son's face. He reached a hand out to run it through Jason's hair as comfort, but hesitated and pulled back, not wanting to cross a boundary.]
“Not right now. Just wanna sit with you.”
He considered for a moment, leaning into the touch.
“Maybe some ice.”
[Bruce nodded, ignoring the spark of joy in his chest that his son wanted to be with him in his vulnerable moments. Bruce's breath hitched when Jason leaned into his hand, and in turn brought it back to his boy's hair, running his hand through it soothingly.]
"Alright, I'll get you some ice then, Jaylad."
[He murmured as he stood up slowly, the chair creaking at the sudden loss of weight as he went to quickly grab an ice pack from a freezer in the cave, not wanting to leave Jason for very long.]
He stayed put asides from the struggle to get his armor and exosuit off, discarding them to the side and rubbing his ribs with a wince.
[Bruce came back and knelt beside Jason, helping him set his extra layers to the side, and gently pressed the ice against his aching ribs.]
"Easy, it might hurt at first, but you have to keep it there, it'll feel better."
[He murmured, unsure why he was saying this. Jason had been dealing with the pain for a while, he probably knew. Bruce didn't sat back onto his chair right away, staying on the floor with Jason, to see if his boy needed any comfort or just his presence nearby.]
He took the ice and nodded as he pressed it to his chest, wincing slightly but accepting the pain as the door to relief.
“… t’anks. I don’t know why it hurt more today. Probably did something dumb and then forgot about it.”
[Bruce filed that away, the ice helped, he'd have to stash more around the manor for whenever Jason came over.]
"It happens." He said softly. "Take all the time you need."

"May I ask your name?"
Clark hit the lawn of Wayne Manor like a falling star that had forgotten how to burn, too fast and heavy. The impact drove the breath from him and split the neat grassline open, earth buckling under his weight as he skidded forward in a rough, ugly trench. Dark soil sprayed up against his suit and clung to his hands, the smell of fresh-turned dirt sharp in his nose.
He’d been trying to make it to the Fortress, push through on stubbornness and willpower alone, but the kryptonite in his system had turned his own body against him. Every beat of his heart felt sluggish, poisoned. Every attempt at lift became dead weight. The sky that usually welcomed him had started to press him down instead, and gravity had finally claimed him.
His palm dug into the torn grass, fingers sinking into damp earth as he hauled his shoulder under him inch by inch. For a moment he almost got his knee underneath, almost found that familiar leverage instead of a struggle. Then his arm gave a sharp, humiliating tremor and the world tipped sideways. The effort scraped a raw sound out of him, half cough, half gasp, and he collapsed back down hard enough to jar his teeth. Pain lanced through him in a bright, sick burst, not from the impact this time, but from inside, as if the kryptonite had hooked itself into his muscles and was yanking whenever he tried to move. His vision pinwheeled, the edges of it dimming, brightening, dimming again, like someone kept flicking the lights behind his eyes.
Whoever had been smuggling the stuff hadn’t just weaponized it as a blade; they’d ground it down into a fine, glittering dust that hung in the air like pollen, invisible until it hit the light. Clark could still taste it. Metallic and bitter, like a mouthful of pennies and ash. It had gotten into his lungs, and now every breath felt tight, shallow, refusing to fill, his chest working like it was trying to inhale through wet cloth. The cough came again, harsher this time, and it dragged up a burning ache from deep in his ribcage. He spat reflexively into the grass, and what hit the ground was darker than it should’ve been. His throat seized with nausea. He pressed his forehead down, breathing through his nose like it might help, like he could will clean air into his body if he was quiet enough.
Another attempt. Stubbornness was what he had left.
Clark braced both hands, elbows locking and unlocking in little failed jerks. He forced his torso up a few inches and immediately regretted it. He heart stuttered, sluggish and heavy, and a cold sweat broke across his skin under the suit. The world narrowed to the simple, brutal facts: his limbs didn’t want to obey, his lungs burned, and the shard still buried in him pulsed with a low, venomous throb that radiated through his neck and shoulder. He could feel it like a second heartbeat sending weakness outward in waves. His fingers clawed at the ground, tearing up grass, leaving crescents in the soil as if he could anchor himself against the pull. But strength drained faster than he could gather it. His arms finally buckled. His cheek hit the dirt, and he lay there gasping, chest hitching, breath scraping in and out with that awful, drowning sound. Superman reduced to a man who couldn’t get enough air.
@big-blue-of-tomorrow
[Bruce was working in the Cave. He had a horrible migraine, but he had to work on this case. Professor Pyg was out, for god’s sake, and there's no telling what would happen if Bruce was too late. If he decided to take a break. He wouldn't allow it. None of the kids were over, and Damian was at school. No one would interrupt him right now, he did not particularly mind it when his children willingly came to him, but now was not the time.]
[Bruce cross-referenced all of Pyg's old hide-outs with recent sightings and known activity. Damn. He knew what he was doing. The only sound interrupting the quiet humming of the Batcave equipment was Bruce's fingers, his eyes locked on the screen as he continued his search, muscles rigid. Not once did his focus waver from his work—not until the alarm flashed across his screen.]
[Something, or someone for that matter was on the manor grounds unauthorized, without passing the manor gates. Unauthorized. Professor Pyg case momentarily taking a backseat in his mind, Bruce immediately pulled up security footage for the more pressing issue. He'd get back to Pyg later.]
[The footage showed displaced dust, nothing of help, but no silhouette sitting or standing up yet, not very helpful. If Batman was spotted moments after something was displaced on Wayne Manor, it would be suspicious, Bruce creased his brows, a frown turning the corners of his mouth slightly downward. This was a predicament. He still couldn't tell what it was that crashed, despite the dust having cleared.]
[A deep trench was formed in the perfect grass, meaning whatever fell was heavy, and fell hard. Bruce's mouth thinned, Alfred would not be pleased, he spent a long time on perfecting all the botany outside, and Bruce would likely be the one blamed for this. Bruce steepled his fingers, stiffening as he watched a hand grabbing onto the grass, the figure appearing to try and pull themselves up, before the hand slipped. Whoever it was, they were hurt bad. And if billionaire playboy Bruce Wayne couldn't be caught fighting something alive after that fall, and Batman couldn't be caught on the manor grounds so quickly after this event occurred, Bruce had to play it smart.]
[His hands found the Batcomputer keys once more. A slowed replay showed a heavy blur crashing down. Still too fast. Bruce slowed the footage down further to see the blur looking distinctly blue and..red?]
[Clark. Bruce's eyes widened and he cursed violently as he ran to the elevator to take him to the main floor, leaving the computer replaying the slowed footage, his chair spinning in his wake. The only reason Clark could be in such a condition would be if something hurt the invulnerable man. Cancelled his powers. Very few substances could render Superman to this state. Bruce remembered the trembling hand that couldn't even grant Clark some leverage to pull himself to his knees and his stomach turned.]
[The elevator doors opened with a ding, Bruce wasted no time in sprinting outside and crossing the manor grounds, which he found to be irritatingly expansive for such a fragile situation. He finally reached the turned up soil where his friend lay. Bruce dropped to his knees beside Clark, one hand on his shoulder, the other finding his neck to search for a thready pulse. The normally untouchable Superman looked horrible, and Bruce cursed under his breath, before speaking.]
"Superman, can you hear me? I'm going to take this out."
[As he spoke, Bruce's hand that was previously checking Clark's pulse moved to the kryptonite blade. Damned rock. This wasn't the first time Bruce found himself removing it from his friend's body. He'd have to do this carefully in order not to break or dislodge the knife and further endanger Clark's health.]
"Brace yourself."
[Bruce kept one hand bracing Clark's shoulder as he slowly took the blade out, ignoring the sickening sound it exited with. Yellow sunlight. That's what Clark needed. First, Bruce had to get him out of the trench, but the Kryptonian still looked as though he was suffering. Something else was wrong.]
"Talk to me Clark, where's the rest?"
“B?”
Tim asks as he enters the batcave, having changed from his suit to more comfortable pajamas, shoulder length hair still wet with rain.
He wants to go to bed, but his hands twitch with anxiety at the thought of leaving when there is still work to be done.
