I adore the idea of people assuming Steve and Dustin are actual brothers upon first meeting them because honestly how would you know they aren't.
It first happens when Dustin attends one of Steve's basketball matches and he cheers for him so loud that one of his teammates just can't help but comment "Hey, you've got one fierce little brother" and Steve tries to pretend to be embarassed about it but it feels nice that someone's actually there to cheer for him for once, even if he knows Dustin is going to bribe him into getting ice cream for him later.
The more Steve drives Dustin places, the more it happens. One time when he drops Dustin off at school he runs into Billy, who was dropping Max off, and who very delightedly comments on how he didn't know that "one of those dweebs" was Steve's brother and he thought he was just a weirdo who befriended middle schoolers. Steve doesn't dream of correcting him.
Dustin realises very quickly that it's super easy to gaslight people into thinking Steve and him were brothers all along, and it's certainly easier than having to make up some cover story for an interdimensional monster eating his cat everytime someone asks. The party is super exasperated with it but they go along with it in most cases because it really is easier than having to make up some lie about the upside down.
Dustin having a special handshake with Steve but not with the party is super important to me because I can just image pre s3 Dustin confiding in Steve that he doesn't feel like any of his friends view him as their best friend and Steve, who thinks Dustin is the brightest, friendliest and sweetest kid he has ever met does not even believe him ("C'mon dude that's bullshit you're like the coolest one of those little shitheads") and when Dustin insists on it Steve just shrugs and then says "But you are my best friend so screw them anyways" as casually as he can manage, and Dustin is over the moon, jumping up and down because "Holy shit WE ARE BEST FRIENDS STEVE!"
And Steve's so relieved both because he doesn't ever want Dustin to feel unwanted, and because well, he never had a best friend either. Sure he had Tommy H. and Carol but they never really bothered to get to know the actual Steve, never went after him, never really wanted to be close with him. But Dustin does, he wants to know Steve's favourite movies even if he will complain about how they're boring, he wants to go to Steve's house to bother him even when they have nothing interesting to do together, he wants to hear his stories, even if they're about fights where he loses and doesn't appear as cool as he wants to.
So Steve and Dustin are best friends now, and Steve can't worm his way out of making up some nerdy handshake when Dustin brings it up because he's so excited about it, telling him it's a tradition between best friends, and Steve can just tell its Dustin's first time having this highly renowned handshake with somebody and who is Steve to deny him that. And thinking about it, Steve never had a secret handshake with anyone either, and he guesses it's better later than never.
i actually really love that joyce was the one who finally killed vecna, in the end. and her "you fucked with the wrong family" before swinging her ax, followed by the shots of each member of said family remembering how his evil hurt them or someone they love is so powerful.
but you know who was noticeably absent yet who arguably deserved to be there more than anyone (except eleven and will)?
max.
vecna tortured and killed her brother in front of her, psychologically tortured her then snapped all her bones and trapped her in his mind, alone, for 2 years. max fought against him just as hard as anyone yet she was reduced to just being lucas's painful memory when the time came. she should have been present with the rest of her family when the time finally came and the battle was won
yes the stranger things finale could have been worse and yes there were absolutely some good moments, and no the bad doesn't cancel out the 4 spectacular seasons we had but like...now when i go back and rewatch, i have to do so with the knowledge that the scared and abused, yet still selfless and strong, little girl on my screen is doomed to die in a pointless sacrifice

i get that by season 5 stranger things had a hugeee main cast and it's hard to write interactions between everyone and still keep the plot moving, but like? surely we could have done better.
joyce was el's adoptive MOTHER yet they said maybe 2 sentences to each other all season? joyce seemingly had no qualms about eleven constantly being in danger, we got no goodbye between them, no real reaction from joyce when eleven sacrifices herself
max and el were best friends but, again, at most a few sentences exchanged. i get max was in a coma for half the season but they didn't so much as hug when max came back to life. did we forget their bond?
speaking of forgetting friendships, robin and steve have been inseparable since robin joined stranger things 3 yet aside from them working together in the beginning, we just tossed their friendship aside in favor of what exactly? having him fight with dustin and jonathan all season long?
even joyce and karen! they went to high school together, raised their kids very closely together, and were clearly close enough for karen to bring joyce food in season 1 and for the byers to be outright living in the wheeler house for a few months in season 5. yet when karen finally finds out about the upside down and gets her throat slashed by it, joyce is given no reaction or care whatsoever for her friend.
max and el are both recognized as steve's children but again, no screen time. we see robin with max, and even vickie, but did steve or even nancy (who fought so hard to help her survive vecna in 4) care when she came back to life? who knows
and, although this one is consistent with every other season unfortunately, reminder that joyce has 2 SONS. yet she was barely around jonathan this season, and although she was constantly trying to keep will safe and protect him, we are apparently left to assume joyce couldn't care less about sending jonathan out on the front lines?
and of course, there is the nagging question of where is max's mom? she wasn't seen at either max's side in the hospital nor at the graduation. what about vickie, who disappears after the military scene and is not mentioned again? and where was dr owens, who has been in the show since season 2 and whose fate is not even mentioned in the final season? are we to simply assume he was killed off screen?
honestly the biggest slap in the face about eleven's death is that a few episodes before, hopper gives his speech about how cruel life has constantly been to el, a little girl; how she has kept fighting and being kind anyway, and how she deserves a life.
and then they went ahead and killed her anyway
as much as i wanted el to live (and as much as she DESERVED to live), i always knew the duffers were going to kill her off because that was their ending when they had it planned as a single-season show.
maybe my biggest issue at this point is the way they did it. if el had died defeating vecna (and don't get me started on that disappointing, anticlimactic final fight), then that would have been one thing. still awful, still heartbreaking, still angering because that girl deserved a life. but at least it would have been for a reason.
instead, the battle was over and won and the duffers killed her THEN, right after the party was celebrating because it was over, happiness was finally in their grasp and they had made it through the nightmare. the little girl who had given up the most, who had only ever known true happiness for a few months of her life, was forced to give it up for no real reason, just to get rid of her. even if you "believe", is it much better to be forced to live without anyone and everyone who has ever loved her, and hide for the rest of her life alone?
the main character responsible for saving everyone time and time again was sacrificed just for the sake of sacrifice and it was beyond pointless and unfair. eleven jane hopper deserved better and WE deserved better
the way el loved max so much that she refused to let her go and restarted her heart, yet when max finally woke up we didn’t even get a hug between them….okay
@mo-mode you. 👏 are. 👏 a. 👏 GENIUS. 👏 NO WONDER WE WERE ALL GETTING THOSE OG WATTPAD/TUMBLR VIBES UGH I LOVE IT~

feeling that ache deep inside remembering that the characters, books, movies, tv shows and stories i love so much are not real. that i love these characters as real people, with all my heart, but i will never get to know what it feels like to be loved by them, to be with them and interact with them, because they do not know me and are not here.
i am a universe away from them yet somehow, i so deeply feel the absence in my life of people and stories who are not real
