screw it we are mechposting now. and I’m gonna say it loud for the ones in the back. HANDLERS. ARE. EXPENDABLE. can you imagine how long it takes to train a person to pilot a piece of machinery the size of a small skyscraper with more joints and pulleys than there are people in said skyscraper? let alone psychologically engineering them to keep those skills and focus through war hell and, depending on the flavor of your mechsplo, the intense hormonal changes caused by sensory implants or regular stimulant use. handlers? handlers are literally just some person who you make the hound hate or you make the hound love. they are scapegoats in case of emergency. all they have to do is repeat orders and be controlling. handlers are a dime a dozen in civilian life and maybe nobody will even miss them! who knows! best part? the more fucked in the head a hound gets the less safety gear you need to give the handler bc chances are they won’t notice the difference when the replacement comes in.

handlers are the real expendable assets.

doylist - it really depends on the canon you’re building. im not writing rules just putting things out there. that being said if i were to counterpoint this, id say the following:

handlers, even if they know how to pilot a mech logically, will never have the experience of the best of hounds (or if they do, it will likely have been diluted by substance use to regain some sanity). that being said i do not think any self-respecting fictional military would waste a well-made hound by letting them become a glorified sports team coach.

handlers may, depending on one’s interpretation, only exist to keep hounds’ emotions targeted at an individual instead of the system. by properly muddying those emotions with pleasure amidst pain, the handler ensures the hound won’t rip out their throat immediately after its mind breaks. memories and logic are cleverly suppressed to create a system which the hound has no proper desire to escape from.

that being said, this doesn’t mean all handlers are expertly picked manipulators. it’s simply that the ones who fail to complete their duties properly usually end their career with a significant chunk of their face missing.

to address the claim above directly - no, the handler is probably not expected to know the intricacies of a hundred-meter-tall machine with twenty different combustible points of failure. that’s a job for r&d - even most mechanics only know how to fix the general reused parts in each model, not the thrumming and clicking of a raptor firing a thousand rounds per minute while going 120 on a mudflat. pilots are pilots for a reason. if just anyone could pilot a mech they wouldn’t need handlers. this isn’t the Air Force. you’re not a squad leader, you’re a babysitter for a crawling breathing loaded gun and if you fuck up you’ll be the first thing in its sights.
