He asked with a seemingly never ending gentle smile as he leaned against the counter next to her

"Er ... I simply needed a moment to myself. It became sort of a routine back home, you see."

"Also, please, call me Frederick. It is quite odd to be referred to as 'Sir Kenneth' within my own home by one who also lives here" he offered her "needing a moment of peace is quite understandable, I needed such also quite often during the war, drunk or not" he reassured her with a chuckle, the memory of drinking together with men such as Giles and Henry seemed quite silly for him now

"Yes, you mentioned you were drinking companions, yes? It still sounds a bit absurd to me and all. Back then that man wouldn't even touch a glass of alcohol !" She lightly giggled

"The image of him, who was quite fond of an excess amount of wine, not touching alcohol seems absurd to me. Did he truly?" He asked with genuine amusement and curiosity in his voice.

"He did try to persuade me to find a wife early in our aquaintanceship, though" he remembered with a quiet laugh, cautious to not wake the other people in the house.

"Well I assume you didn't take his word, then. You don't have a wife yet, no?" Yet.

"I can imagine Carol misses her father. I had lost my mother as a child, only a wee bit older than her, and I certainly miss her a lot." He changed the topic, his voice turning a bit worried for the child he almost views as a niece

He asked, genuinely confused. He does not see a reason to be guilty, at least not if he ignored his actions he had done on the battlefield. But those were necessary for the fight.

... The air changed very quickly. Claudia had a sullen expression as she turned away. The question was with no ill will towards Frederick. It just.. came out.

"What has triggered such a question if I might ask?" Has asked her curiously with his eyes reflecting the same curiosity that is to be found in his voice and also a slight trace of concern and..... guilt?

"It's quite unthinkable. for me. at the very least." She would think back to her father who would always tell her to find a husband. And to Giles, who was eager to marry as well.

"It was unthinkable for me too for a long time" he said with an empathetic and good-hearted laugh "but some people, nay, one person has taught me that there be much more to life than marriage." He told the woman with a gentle and encouraging smile

"Is it, now ?"

"For me, life is about my family. My sister and my father, but also the family I gained over the course of the war. 'Tis also about finding a home, a place where I feel I can be myself and where I can forge myself a place in society." He told the woman calmly

She continued to listen as he spoke. His words were certainly reassuring, something someone especially like her would need to hear, and yet she seemed to be getting lost in her own thoughts at the moment.

"Yes, I speak of Smith. Him and I certainly have a...." he prayed she couldn't see the redden of his cheeks "... special bond. Him and I grew quite close during the war" he told her with a smile which mirrored quite the fondness

She had to put her mind off of it, so, "Would you care to tell me more of your friendship with him, if you would not mind?" Even if it's just a way for her to numb her mind, like the whiskey.

His voice dripped with fondness and care and, if one might forget he be talking about a man and not a woman, love. His smile all too small but shouting a big signal of, again, fondness and care into the world.
