All âRockyâ and âCreedâ Films Ranked. (8)
The Rocky movies have been around for some time now, making it over 40 years now since Rocky (1976) hit theaters and won Academy Awards making Sylvester Stallone a household name and cementing himself into American Film History with one of the most iconic and beloved characters Rocky Balboa. Here is my list of all 8 films including Creed and Creed 2.
8. Rocky V (1990). The fifth Rocky film starts off after the events of Rocky IV (1985) in which Rocky (Stallone) defeated the big bad Russian Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) in Russia on Christmas Day. This is where the Rocky films make good use of starting the films off right where the previous left off. First seen in Rocky II (1979) where the film starts at the end of Rocky (1976) and leads its way to a new movie.Â
Rocky V brings back the old Rocky, and when I say âoldâ I mean the Rocky that we all fell in love with from the first and second films. After taking several of blows to the head over the years and especially after battling Drago (Lundgren) twice, Rocky (Stallone) is forced to retire because of trauma to the head and can no longer compete. Which if you know Rock, you know this was a tough decision for him because he is a fighter and thatâs all he ever wants to do. So, after not being around in the ring, a new force rises in young rookie, Tommy Gunn (Tommy Morrison) and wants Rocky to train him because he is living back in his old house in Philly after Paulie (Burt Young) lost all of Rockyâs money. But when Rocky takes Tommy Gunn under his wing, he forgets about his son, Robert, who is played by Stalloneâs real son (Sage Stallone) and is only worried about Tommy and trying to keep his own name relevant under a new and younger body.
7. Rocky II (1979). This film starts off right where Rocky (1976) left off, with Rocky (Stallone) and Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) fighting after Apollo (Weathers) gave Rocky a once in a lifetime opportunity to challenge him. An underdog from the streets of Philly vs. Apollo Creed, the World Heavyweight Boxing Champion.
This film starts to develop the character of Rocky even more. Rocky (Stallone) wants more after proving that he can take a beating from one of the most talented and hard hitting boxers in Apollo (Weathers). And the relationship between Rocky and Adrian (Talia Shire) starts to come together as Rocky ends up marrying Adrian and at the end, they have a kid. Rocky II is a great follow up to Rocky because like I said, it leads right into it and it gives us a new perspective and meaning to the characters as we begin to see changes in Rocky. Ultimately, this film leads to one of the most anticipated rematches in film history Rocky vs Apollo 2 for the Championship. And guess what... Rocky wins, cementing himself into the history books as the new Heavyweight Champion of the World.Â
6. Rocky Balboa (2006). After 16 years without a Rocky film, Rocky Balboa comes out and hits us right in the feels as we get to see the character most of us grew up with back on the big screen for one last fight against Mason âThe Lineâ Dixon, the current Champion of our time.Â
This is a great addition to the Rocky franchise because we havenât seen Rocky in over 16 years so we all wondered what he has been up to, and he owns a restaurant, Adrians, which is an Italian restaurant named after Rockyâs wife Adrian (Talia Shire) who we find out has died of cancer. Also, Rocky is still living in the same house in Philly and still talks to Paulie (Burt Young) who still works at the meat factory. Rocky Balboa shows us that no matter how old you are and no matter what everyone says, if you believe in yourself and your dreams, youâre never too old to achieve them. As Rocky says in this film ,âItâs not about how hard you get hit, itâs about how hard you can get hit and get back up.â As he says this to his son, Robert (Milo Ventimiglia) who doesnât want his dad, Rocky whom may I remind you is now 60, to fight because of a computer generated fight between Rocky and Mason Dixon is shown on ESPN and Rocky winning the animated fight which leads to speculation and a âwhat ifâ moment which is what this 6th film is all about, only fitting ranking it 6 on my list.
5. Creed (2015). Creed is a film centered around Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) the son of the late and great Apollo Creed who died in the hands of Rocky in Rocky IV after fighting Drago (Lundgren). Adonis, is a boxer just like his father, but isnât to that status yet as he does not want people to know that he is the son of one of the Worldâs most popular boxers, Apollo Creed. Adonis (Jordan) fights in small crowds against nobodies really, trying to just make boxing a hobby and to keep active. Though Adonis (Jordan) does want more, he isnât sure if he is ready to live up to his name and reputation of his father, Apollo, so he heads to Philly from LA, where he lives, to find Rocky (Stallone) and to tell him that he is Apolloâs son.Â
This ultimately leads Rocky to take on Adonis and to mentor him and train him for one of his biggest fights yet against âPrettyâ Ricky Conlan. Although Adonis doesnât win, he does put on a show and is awarded a sign of respect from Conlan at the end of the film. Creed is a great addition to the Rocky franchise because of Michael B. Jordanâs performance and he and Stallone have great chemistry on screen.Â
4. Rocky III (1982). In Rocky III we start right away with the last scene from Rocky II (1979) in which Rocky and Apollo squared off in the rematch on the century for the championship. Rocky defeats Apollo making him the new Champion of the World. Then we get the âEye of the Tigerâ song by Survivor, which is an iconic song still to this day. This montage to the song shows us Rocky defending his title and becoming a better champion and in ring fighter and we get to see him grow too, body wise, as he is cut in this film, unlike Rocky and Rocky II.Â
So after all of this and all of the fights over the years as Champion, it catches the eye of one of Rockyâs most challenging competitorâs yet, Clubber Lang, a big baddie and a dominant force in the ring. You can only guess what happens then. Rocky accepts the challenge to fight Clubber (Mr. T.) for the belt, and Rocky looses, making Clubber Lang (Mr. T.) the new Champion, and this forces Rocky to befriend Apollo (Carl Weathers) in training him so he can take back whatâs his and that is the World Heavyweight Championship.
3. Creed II (2018) is the latest to hit theaters in November 2018. The much anticipated sequel to Creed (2015) continues the story of Adonis Creed (Michael B. Jordan) and the relationship between him and Bianca (Tessa Thompson) and still the relationship between his mentor and âUncleâ Rocky (Stallone).Â
Creed II starts off with Adonis (Jordan) fighting for the Championship in Vegas, because why not? If you ever want to win a title in a fight, it better be in Vegas. So Adonis wins, making him the new Heavyweight Champion and we get to see why it means so much to him, or does it? Only time will tell as we see that Adonis (Jordan) isnât proud of being the champion probably because he misses his father, Apollo and wishes he were there. Creed II is also similar to Rocky II (1979) because Adonis and Bianca have a child and get marries, well we donât see that part, but itâs out there. But most importantly, Creed II centers around Adonis vs Viktor Drago. Yes, the infamous name is back on the big screens. Years after the events of Rocky IV (1985) took place, we all wanted to see Drago (Lundgren) come back, and now we do, but itâs Ivanâs son, Viktor that is the challenger, much like his father was in the ring, Viktor is a dominant and brute force and wants to take the belt from Adonis. Creed II is an instant classic and that doesnât happen a lot with sequels to a great franchise, but they pulled it off.Â
2. Rocky IV (1985). This is one of the most recognizable films of the Rocky franchise and one of the most memorable as well with iconic scenes and names, and phrases and songs and training montages. Everyone knows this film and the line âDragoâ as Rocky (Stallone) shouts it from the mountain top.
This film starts off with Rocky and his family living in a mansion, and Rocky does deserve it. An underdog from Philly, now a millionaire boxer and historic figure to the city of Philadelphia. Who would have ever thought? I know Rocky sure didnât and itâs all thanks to Apollo giving Rocky the chance to fight him. When one of Russiaâs most talented fighters in Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) wants to challenge Apollo in the United States, things donât go as planned as Drago (Lundgren) kills Apollo (Weathers) in the ring. Rocky could have thrown in the towel, but Apollo told Rocky NOT TO DO IT. Many still hold grudges over that moment, but all Rocky was trying to do is to listen and to respect his best friend. This is where the events start to unfold as we see Rocky taking on Drago, but getting his butt kicked because Drago is a freak. Later on, Rocky wants a rematch and the only stipulation is that it would take place on Christmas Day in Russia. Rocky travels to Russia to train, but Adrian (Talia Shire) isnât having it and doesnât want Rocky to go, she ultimately gives in and is there for her husband. Rocky IV is a classic in so many ways and still to this day is. With Creed II hitting theaters, Rocky IV is relevant again because Creed II brings back the character of Ivan Drago (Lundgren).
1. Rocky (1976). Of course this has to be number one on the list right? This is the film that started it all. This is the film that we fell in love with. This is the film that made Stallone. Rocky was written by Sylvester Stallone, and as many donât know, was written based of Stalloneâs real life in a way, both wanting more for themselves.Â
Rocky came out in 1976, which was Americaâs Bicentennial Year, not that this has to do with anything, but it is still important because you will never forget the year. This film won Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Film Editing in the Academy Awards also Stallone was nominated for Best Actor in Leading Role.Â
Rocky Balboa is a small-time boxer trying to make a living and get by. With taking on small fights around the city of Philadelphia and doing whatever he can on the side, Rocky is struggling there is no doubt about that. Things start to change when Rocky meets Adrian (Talia Shire) who works at a pet store and lives with her crazy brother, Paulie (Burt Young). But when Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) comes up with an idea to give an underdog or a not so famous boxer a chance to fight him on the 4th of July, Rocky takes on the challenge and we see him start to train and to get back what he once was or wanted to be. And when the fight is over at the end, we saw that Rocky proved himself against Apollo and was still standing and never backed down and that this could be the start of a long famed career for Balboa.Â
