MDZS Chinese fans should just not stop at calling out 7seas' homophobia. They should also call out 7seas' racism and orientalism too.
7seas 𫧠chloe moriondo
on the 7seas mxtx english editions
I have been struggling to write this since December. I still donât really know where or how to begin, but the recent announcement of 2haâs English licensing by Seven Seas seems as good a motivator as any at this point.
I guess before I begin, I want to make clear that I am not writing this with the intent or desire to harmâitâs certainly a criticism, but I want it to be a practical one. Please donât use my words as an excuse to take up arms or make personal attacks. I donât want to be used as a prop in anyone elseâs fights, I donât wan to talk about it, I just want to say my piece and be done.
So. Without mincing words: I am beyond disappointed in the MXTX English-language editions. The idea that this might be what sets the precedent for future danmei releases is incredibly disheartening. There are several reasons, and Iâll try to explain my main issues as best I can without being unnecessarily harsh. I will be talking about specifics with regards to MDZS, as itâs the one Iâm most familiar with.
Quality & Production Timeline:
The overall quality of the work is lackluster and rushed. Several reviews have already discussed issues with the MDZS translation that was publishedâthey are easy to find on Goodreads and elsewhere, but I am not going to link them here because I feel that relitigating details and pinning blame on the translator(s) is very misguided. The licensed translation is full of mistakes (both major and minor), inconsistencies, and confusing wording. To me, this betrays a very serious lack of editorial oversight and quality checking rather than a problem with the raw translation itself. No translator on earth can produce a first draft without mistakes, yes, even very basic ones. Everyone slips up, even in their native tongue, all the time. Having mistakes in an early draft is not at all an indication that a translator lacks skill, and this persistent focus on the faults of the translator(s) feels more like scapegoating than anything. I may not agree with all of the translation choices, but I do not think that mistakes make the translator(s) unqualified.
While I am happy to have official translations to danmei novels, the translation teams 7seas has hired for the translations are way too biased and have made their least favourite characters looks bad by mistranslating things more than once.

KAYLA
Character of @inntaleofficial
Okay but my main takeaway from this is the question: will the written novel (and therefore english editions) get a revised version as well? Will 7seas revise their publishing schedule? Please pretty please
hi, about seven seas union busting: the union is not calling for a boycott at this time, so we should go with their plan of action and continue buying from 7s normally. unions are much better at organizing these things than individual consumers are so it's import to go with their strategy! instead check out their website for ways to support them
anon i donât mean to be rude to you but this line of thinking is very shallow. the union is not calling for a boycott because unions rarely call for boycotts due to the potential to be sued or face legal consequences for interfering with business. the 7seas union canât officially call for a boycott or they open themselves to legal liability.
the labor movement in the US in particular is so very often about reading between the lines because of how hostile our laws are to labor and how favorable they are to business. i canât tell you what to do but im not going to be supporting a business that union busts and has the kinds of business practices that the union is stating 7seas does.
consumer choice will vary person to person but what im DESPERATELY asking anyone who reads this to do is to NOT use the fact that the 7seas union hasnât called for a boycott (aka CANâT call for a boycott) as carte blanche to continue buying from 7seas. if you still want to buy from them, fine, but you really shouldnât use the union not calling for a boycott as your free pass to do so
